Overview

Immerse yourself in Kyoto’s geisha culture on this Gion walking tour. Your guide will explain the difference between maiko, geiko, and many other terms, and you’ll learn about the history and traditions of Japan’s old capital. See famous movie locations, and upgrade for a longer tour with a private guide for a more in-depth experience.

What to Expect

Your walking tour of Japan’s old capital begins by meeting at the Gion Omoide Museum. You’ll explore Gion, which is famous for being the geisha district of Kyoto. During the tour, your guide will point out locations that were featured in the book and movie Memoirs of a Geisha.

As you walk down cobbled streets and past a beautiful stream, you’ll hear stories of Kyoto’s ancient past. Your guide will educate you on the history of geisha—from their kimonos and hairstyles to rules and daily rituals. If you’re lucky, you may even spot a geisha on the street.

For a more in-depth experience, upgrade to a private tour. Your experience will be extended by two hours and you’ll see three Geisha areas in total—Gion, Pontocho, and Miyagawacho.
