- Caroline B0 contributionsTraditional tea ceremonyThis was a wonderful insight into the ceremony performed by someone with who had been doing the ceremony for decades. She was very happy to answer as many questions as you had as well.Written 27 December 2024
- Marinella B0 contributionsWorth itThe place is located in a nice quiet neighbourhood - away from the bustling crowds in kyoto. Enjoyed the tea ceremony with Aya san. Wagashi and tea were excellent. Appreciate that it included brief history on tea ceremonies and the purpose of each room and process.Written 28 November 2024
- Kieran K0 contributionsAn ideal experience in every detailAya-san is a warm and hospitable host and we thoroughly enjoyed our traditional Japanese tea ceremony with her. We learned so much about the history and tradition and will never forget the experience. The tea room that she and her husband recently renovated was so lovely and the perfect space to enjoy the ceremony. Her attention to detail from the selection of the sweet treats that accompany the service, to the tea, the art and everything in between were ideal.Written 6 November 2024
- Kieran K0 contributionsIf you're in Kyoto, take this classIf you're in Kyoto and interested in a cultural experience, TAKE THIS CLASS. Aya-san and her husband were wonderful hosts. Aya-san's 50+ years of experience in the art of Japanese calligraphy, provided a class full of history, deep knowledge, and wonderful instruction. She is a natural teacher. I was so taken with the experience that I wanted a brush of my own. Aya-san directed to her favorite shop and over text helped me select a weasel brush in my price range. She and her husband were generous and lovely hosts to us.Written 6 November 2024
- heikey20140 contributionsTea Master ExperienceWhat a delightful experience at the tea master's home! We learned so much about the ceremony of tea making, and our host and husband were so kind and inviting. For one hour, we learned about the importance of tea brewing and why this tradition exists. Traditions are so important to keep alive and teach, especially to foreigners, so we also understand them. Don't miss this experience.Written 20 October 2024
- Jeremy M0 contributionsDo you want to try Japanese calligraphy? This is the place to get the e best experience! If you’re looking for a Japanese calligraphy experience, you must book this one! Aya-san and her husband are an extremely welcoming and attentive host couple and made us feel welcome in their home. Aya-san is a very capable teacher and helped our group of four (two adults and two 13 year olds) produce some lovely Kanji characters to take home. It was lovely to learn about calligraphy and hear about Aya-san’s experience of learning her art from a very young age.Written 2 October 2024
- burtonjssc0 contributionsBeautiful writingHad a great class! I really learned a lot about Japanese calligraphy. The teacher was knowledgeable and patient. It was exciting to see my improvement over the course of the lesson and create some beautiful characters to take home.Written 17 August 2024
- alexfliesaround0 contributionsA must do in Kyoto! Our experience at Aya-San’s tea ceremony was the most authentic and exciting thing we did in Kyoto, and among the best things I’ve done in all of Japan. From the moment we entered, Aya made us feel welcomed and relaxed. I highly recommend this activity to anyone that is looking for an authentic Japanese experience in the ancient capital of Kyoto.Written 5 August 2024
- CB2014010 contributionsBeautiful handwritingOur family really enjoyed this experience, which is located at the host's home. She made it super easy to find her house with detailed instructions. After a brief introduction to calligraphy, each member of our family learned to write four different words. The host attached our final drawings to a matte for us to take home. She took pictures for us of our artwork and a few action shots with our concentration faces on! Our whole family, including teenage boys, had a great time!Written 27 July 2024
- woolfish0 contributionsBeautiful art afternoonWe loved this workshop- it was just the two of us (myself and my 11 year old), and our hosts were very generous with their time and knowledge. We walked away with many calligraphy symbols to hang up and an appreciation for the artistry of it. Such a nice way to spend a rainy afternoon in the middle of Kyoto.Written 10 July 2024
- Zazu1110 contributionsBuyer BewareDue to circumstances out of our control, we missed our booking time. We contacted the vendor prior and they refused to refund. They also would not let us change to a different day or time since they were “fully booked.” So unfortunate and expensive for nothing. Would NOT recommend.Written 7 July 2024
- Becahm0 contributionsQuiet moments away from the busyness of Kyoto in tourist seasonA truly beautiful and educational experience with a wonderfully kind tea master. Aya and her husband talked us through the ceremony and patiently answered our questions. When they saw that we are older people , and my husband with a bad back, stools were produced for our comfort. An unexpected bonus was that Aya’s husband took a number of photos during the ceremony which he later shared with us as lovely souvenirs of a memorable hour or so.Written 8 June 2024
- DanniShaw0 contributionsAmazing Must-Try Authentic Calligraphy ExperienceThis is a fantastic must-do experience. The couple who run this family business are incredibly welcoming and patient. They put you at ease immediately and teach you so much about the rich history of this beautiful art. We loved every minute of this and it was a real highlight of our trip. Do book with them. It’s so worth it. You even get to take your work home with you, after they have lovingly mounted, signed (with your name) and stamped it. A perfect Japanese experience.Written 23 May 2024
- halz20180 contributionsGreat Activity - Fun, Informative and Worthwhile!Journey through Japanese history through the written language and learn about the Kanji characters, its meaning and how some of the characters are characters within a character from a very knowledge calligraphy teacher in Ms. Aya Ito. When the writing portion starts, she will guide the your hand and the “fude” (writing brush) with grace and ease. Then you’ll have fun trying your hand at writing the kanji characters on your own as she provides key pointers. It was fun, interesting and informative. And you’ll get to take your master pieces home! Highly recommend.Written 12 March 2024
- yesdarling0 contributionsFantastic tea ceremony experience. An excellent experience. My wife sprained her ankle just before going. They helped take care of her and gave an outstanding tea ceremony experience. Would definitely recommend.Written 8 September 2023

Our family, including 2 boys aged 15 and 14, really enjoyed this class. It was fun and just a little tiny bit challenging, with the bonus of some yummy sushi at the end. Aya was very welcoming and it was wonderful to learn more about Japanese culture in this personalised environment.

This was truly one of the highlights of our time in Japan. We were a group of six to include grandparents and two teen age girls. Not only are Aya and her husband fantastic host and it was a real treat and honor to be able to be in their home, the experience was fun and engaging! The final result was almost (almost) too pretty to eat. My parents are still talking about how much fun they had. I’m so so glad we were able to do this.

Great class, my son and I were surprised on how well our sushi turned out. Ito-san was an excellent instructor and there was plenty of good information and instruction. The tea and soup were also delicious. Thank you both for your kindness and your superb instruction!

We signed up the children in our group (ages 12-16, one boy and three girls, from two families) for the sushi roll class and they had a fantastic time. Even putting on the attire was a transformative experience for them; Aya did a wonderful job with the girls’ hair in particular.
Everybody had a great time and learned something new about making sushi rolls.
Overall, it was a relaxing change of pace from the sight-seeing rush. I think the photos give a good flavour for the experience.
I highly recommend signing up for one of the many experiences on offer here.
