Very nice and interresting visit
Feb 2020
Our guide Maiko was very nice and spoke very well english. Her explanations gave us a good introduction to Japanese history, and to how the castle was used, as well as the symbols in the paintings.
We had the chance to be the only ones on the tour, and were able to ask many questions, and get instructive answers.

English Guided Tour
Feb 2020 • Family
Nijo-jo Castle is full of rich history. We joined the English Guided Tour on 8 February 2020. Our guide - Maiko (every Sat) is very good. She is very knowledgeable, friendly & funny too. Her English explanations were very clear and educational. It’s one of the best that I highly recommend.

A Tour of a Beautiful Japanese Castle with an Amazing Guide
Apr 2019 • Family
My mother and I were really lucky to come at a time of sakura blooming and also have the tour guide all to ourselves today. The audio documentary may have worked too but we love having to learn the history of this castle and that of the Tokugawa family first hand from our guide, Maiko-san, who is very kind, patient and knowledgeable. The paintings in each room is amazing as well. Worth spending some time here especially for hanami / sakura viewing. The pace is just right for my mother. Thank you Maiko-san.

Awesome tour of Nijo-Jo Castle
Mar 2019 • Solo
This tour led by Miho was excellent. I was lucky to have stumbled upon the English tour booth at the entry gate of the castle. Miho was incredibly knowledgable of the castle history using visual guides to assist. She also gave many great restaurant and to-do recommendations as she is a local of the area. Miho speaks at a highly proficient level of English and is fluent in Japanese so she can converse with other locals for any additional information you may desire. Wholeheartedly recommend this tour it will give you a clearer understanding of the importance of Nijo-Ji castle that you probably will not get from reading the informational placards. Aloha Miho!

UNESCO Castle Site (1994)
Feb 2019 • Family
A very important site to visit in Japan. Nijo-jo Castle (二条城, Nijōjō), accessed through the Kara-Man Gate, was built in 1603. The castle was the Kyoto residence of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo Period. The castle's palace buildings were completed 23 years later and expanded the castle. Nijo Castle was used as an imperial palace until it was donated to the city opened to the public as a historic site. The castle buildings are described as the best surviving examples of castle palace architecture of Japan's feudal era.

Nijo Castle is divided into three areas: the Honmaru (main circle of defense), the Ninomaru (secondary circle of defense) and gardens that encircle the Honmaru and Ninomaru. The entire castle grounds and the Honmaru are surrounded by stone walls and moats.

English speaking guides take you multiple waiting and audience rooms. Only the highest ranked visitors were allowed all the way into the main audience room where the shogun would sit on an elevated floor, flanked by bodyguards hidden in closets. A display of the event is depicted with mannequins. Lower ranked visitors were allowed only into the adjoining rooms without direct view of the shogun. Innermost rooms which included living chambers for the family were accessible only to the shogun and his female attendants.

The fourth room (Ohiroma Yon-no-ma) contains the Matsutaka wall painting of a hawk perched on a massive pine tree. This painting is the most important wall painting in the Palace. Outside the castle is a cafe and souvenir store. A great family visit site. Plan on a 1-2 hour visit. Can be very crowded so plan ahead.

Worth the money to get the most out of Nijo-jo
Mar 2019 • Friends
I first visited Nijo-jo in 2014 and hired an audio guide. It was interesting enough and it provided adequate information but it lacked something. Taking a friend from America around Kyoto led us here and we saw the last tour for the day was just a short wait so we paid for the English language tour and I can say the experience is much better for it.

Our guide was very fluent in English and could explain points of interest much better and in more detail than a static audio guide can. We were really fortunate that there was nobody else in the tour group that day so we could more easily ask questions than had there been a larger group. They give a short summary of the history of Japanese history as it pertains to events relevant to the castle as you go through the tour and each area is explained well and provides many details audio guides don't mention.

For 2,000 yen ($22 AU) for a 90 minute tour, it's definitely money well spent.

Fluent English. The 2000 yen price is not included in admission, but it is well worth the investment. There are small details to every museum or heritage site that are missed by those who are not intimately familiar with the subject. My guide, Maki, gave me deep insight into the artwork and ornamentation of the castle, that I would hardly have given a second glance on my own. Learn about the family crests, the powerful Shogun family who built it, and their eventual demise. Learn about the tense political atmosphere between the Shogun and the Emperor. Learn about he subtle, and the somewhat lest subtle, displays of power that led to one of Japan’s longest reigns of peace. Then just appreciate its beauty, and the experience of a working Nightingale Floor. Almost everything’s been refurbished last year so now is the time to see it.
