- 178JaimeTal0 contributionsAMAZING EXPERIENCE! Highly recommend to all.Couldn’t recommend this sushi class more for many reasons. It’s in such a great location (right by the Fushimi Inari Shrine). Kana is so friendly and knowledgeable about the Kyoto area, sushi and also speaks amazing English. Everything for the class was incredibly well prepared. The class was authentic and in a beautiful space. The fish used in class was fresh and purchased that morning from the Nishiki market. Everything was delicious and we would return back to Kana again for another class as it was so great! Thank you so much Kana! We hope to see you again another time.Written 4 January 2024
- tljackson650 contributionsLovely sushi making classPLEASE SUPPORT THIS BUSINESS. Kana is one of the best people, you will ever meet. And she is building this business on her own with the support and help of her family. We had such a lovely morning with Kana and her mother. The rice we used for our sushi was grown on her father’s farm. We had a great time making sushi practicing our limited Japanese, just talking getting to know a little about eash other’s culture. The sushi were lovely and oh, so very good. I can’t say enough good things about Kana and this class. It’s a nice little break from just being a tourist, to sit and enjoy and learn about sushi.Written 2 December 2023
- jasonmN9717PG0 contributionsAmazing sushi making experience in Kyoto!Atelier Sushi runs sushi making workshops in a beautiful location quite near the famous Fushimi Inari shrine (of the Memoirs of a Geisha fame). Each workshop runs for 90 minutes, twice a day and is conducted in English. The instructor, Kana, is an incredibly friendly, kind and knowledgeable lady who has a great passion for what she does, and also the city of Kyoto. She is also a very talented sushi instructor! I mean, lok at what she was able to teach me to make at my first ever attempt at making sushi! Her instructions are very clear (there was even a 4 year old making amazing sushi in the same workshop as me!). You are also gifted a gift pack that contains your bamboo sushi mat, a set of lovely chopsticks and Kana's own recipe for making vinegared sushi. If you are looking for a fun, informative and delicious food experience when you visit Kyoto, definitely look them up. They are the proud owners of 112 out of 112 5 out of 5 ratings on Tripadvisor (at the time of writing). Thank you so much Kana!!Written 26 November 2023

- noahmD2740ZD0 contributionsMUST DO experience for ANYONE visiting Kyoto!!!I would consider doing this experience a must-do for anyone visiting Kyoto!!! I had an amazing time throughout the roughly hour and a half lesson! The host/instructor, Kana, was incredibly helpful, knowledgeable, and kind with her explanations of how to make the sushi as well as giving historical and cultural explanations to where some of the sushi rolls came from! The fish was fresh, tasted great, and we were given miso soup and hot tea along with the sushi we made throughout the class. At the end, we were also given gift bags containing recipes and utensils for us to make sushi at home! Thank you Kana for such an incredible lesson!!Written 31 May 2023
- nicholasohrn0 contributionsAn excellent afternoon experience for sushi loversWe absolutely loved our class with Cana. She had a lovely personality, an excellent grasp of English, and a knack for teaching the basics of sushi making. From the moment we arrived, she made us feel at home and welcome. The class is straightforward as the fish is already prepared for you. As a participant, you help mix the seasoning into the rice you'll use for your sushi and then are walked through making six pieces of ngiri and one sushi roll. At the end, you get to enjoy eating your creation alongside some delicious soup and green tea. In all, it was a great experience. Both my wife and I loved the class and would recommend to any sushi lover looking for a fun and delicious afternoon. I want to say again how delightful Cana was. Her personality was a real highlight.Written 14 February 2023
- Charlotte M0 contributionsFantastic, must do in KyotoAbsolutely loved this class! - howarddyer0 contributionsPerfect sushi experienceMy wife and I visited Atelier Sushi after a morning at Fushimi Inari Shrine. We used Google Maps to find the way, it was very simple to find and based in a lovely housing area. The place was very clean, inviting and modern. We made 5 pieces of nigiri sushi, 2 pieces of battleship/maki sushi and a large sushi roll. We were then given miso soup, plenty of green tea and a desert to enjoy with/after eating our sushi. We were glad that we didn’t eat beforehand because we were pleasantly full when leaving. The class was prepared perfectly, and Cana and her assistants were very friendly, helpful and a lot of fun. We were given a gift bag to take away with us, including chopsticks and a sushi rolling mat which was a lovely touch. Photos were taken throughout the whole experience and then emailed to us afterwards which again was a lovely bonus and saved us worrying about taking photos ourselves. Perfect sushi experience, would highly recommend to anyone. Can’t wait to use our acquired knowledge to make sushi ourselves at home.Written 27 April 2019
- Ayaphoto0 contributionsWonderful experienceI visited here with my friend after Fushimi Inari. Very easy to get there. It takes about 15minits. We made nigiri and roll sushi. It was so delicious and simple way to make them. Staffs are very gently and friendly. I want to go again when my friends come to Japan. Highly recommend!! 友達と行ってきました! オシャレな空間で、アットホームにおすしを作って食べれます!お子さま連れにも良いかもしれません!お腹いっぱいになります!ネタも新鮮で美味しかったです。是非また行きたいです!Written 19 March 2019
- ktari30 contributionsFun break from sightseeing! The workshop is located a short 15 min walk from Fushimi Shrine where we were going anyway so it was pretty convenient. I’m not much of a cook so wasn’t sure what to expect but turned out to be really enjoyable! The woman that held the class was very friendly, patient, spoke decent English, and took us through making sushi in an easy to follow and unhurried way. Was fun to do something other than just sightseeing while in Kyoto and experience a bit of Japanese cuisine culture. Highly recommended as you also get to eat the results of your handy work for lunch (so if you figure that in to the cost it’s well worth it!) We were all given sushi rolling mats and easy to follow instructions on how to make sushi when we get back to our homes so looking forward to trying it out then! All in all lots of fun (for our kids too) and highly recommended.Written 24 February 2019
- 31gah0 contributionsGreat place to enjoy the handmade sushi素敵な場所で寿司体験ができる場所です。 The place is near the toufukuji temple. You can take the keihan train to tobakaido. I feel just like went to some Japanese friends house and we enjoyed the sushi together. Their fish and other foods were great and fresh especially the salmon! I really want to try it again! After the lesson, we got the sushi bamboo roller which can made it at home by myself! I recommend this sushi lesson to who may interest at the Japanese food and quite atmosphere space to enjoy!Written 23 February 2019

We had a great time with my husband and I in the company of Kana our teacher who speaks excellent English. There were only 4 of us for this course, which we shared with Daniel and Jasmine (from LA), and what a pleasure to be able to learn and exchange all together. Adapting to all ages and desires, Kana knows how to take the time and is very pedagogue.
This workshop was an excellent experience that we recommend to get acquainted with the making of sushi but also for the setting in which the course is taught, super small house / traditional restaurant renovated with taste. Kana taught us a lot about Japanese culture and traditions. She is gentle and caring like many Japanese.
The small touches are numerous and the tasting excellent, in short not to be missed!

Atelier SUSHI

This was such a great experience. We truly enjoyed making all the sushi. We got to make nigiri and a salmon roll and it was so good! The owner/instructor is very good. She taught very clearly but we moved at a good pace, not reiterating things we already knew. It was very fun to make the sushi and it turned out really delicious. We made so much we couldn’t eat it all so it’s definitely worth the money. I would absolutely recommend coming if you have time in Kyoto!

If you are all about experiences, then this is the thing to do in Kyoto! I often find it difficult to engage local people in conversation, but Kana and her husband were so open to telling us about Japan culture! They were so nice to refer us to a local knife shop (JIKKO) in Kyoto and my wife was so happy with to leave Japan with a beautiful souvenir for everyday use.
The sushi-making class was fun, but I would give yourself plenty of time to arrive since the class is the located in the residential area. Also, come ready to eat, because you make lots of sushi. Also, we got to hang out with people from around the world, which was fun as well. I highly recommend booking this experience, not only does one learn to make sushi, but the taste of the sushi was authentic and delicious. Good times!

Kana was such an amazing teacher and host. We learned and prepared different types of sushi and she provided accommodations for different allergies in our party. Everyone was thoroughly involved the entire time and we learned about Japanese history, sushi, and customs as she taught us how to prepare our own sushi. We made three different types of sushi: nigiri, gunkan, and handrolled sushi.
The sushi was delicious and she sent us home with a beautiful souvenir so that we can continue to make sushi at home. Kana and her assistant showed us the spirit of omotenashi - whole-hearted hospitality and thoughtfulness. Would definitely recommend!

This sushi making class was in a beautiful studio space in a quiet neighborhood. The group was seven people which was a great size for everyone to get lots of individualized attention. In the class we learned how to make nigiri and roll sushi, which was fun and engaging. Before and after eating the sushi we made, our host taught us Japanese etiquette for mealtime. Overall it was interesting, enjoyable and the sushi was delicious! I would highly recommend this experience to anyone interested in making and eating delicious sushi.

My wife and I had a blast learning how to make sushi in a very intimate, family-friendly environment. The instructors were extremely personable and taught us about the sushi making process, life in Japan, and offered great recommendations for our stay in Kyoto. I was really impressed how they were able to simplify the process and made it so our first sushi endeavor was a success (and delicious!). They also provided us with tools that we can take home to make sushi when we get back to the states. I would highly recommend to anyone who enjoys cooking classes and sushi!

The Sushi making experience with Kana and Kierin was simply awesome! The making of the sushi itself felt incredibly thorough and professional. And that it was the freshest and most delicious sushi ever was a nice added benefit! But the experience was made that much richer by Kana and Kierin's willingness to answer questions about Japan and talk about the culture and the history with us! Their openness and welcome made us feel particularly comfortable in the space. We even did a few of the activities they had recommended later in Kyoto on our own. I would really highly recommend this experience! Thanks again Kana and Kierin!

This was one of the best experiences I've ever had on any excursion! Everything from arriving to leaving was easy and pleasant. Our Instructor Kana was very nice and greeted us at the front of the property and was very knowledgeable about not just the sushi but the building and the location around it. She was so helpful and guided us into making wonder pieces of sushi. If I could include more than 5 stars then this would be the cade because everything was above and beyond! The gift at the ends just made it that much better, the cherry on top, and the proximity to not just the Fushimi Inari Shrine but others as well made the whole experience so much better. I would recommend this sushi making workshop to anyone and everyone and I wish the best for the Atelier Sushi Team!

We booked our sushi course very spontaneously and were lucky - we were able to enjoy a private lesson with Kana, who taught us everything important about Temaki and Nigiri sushi. The ingredients were very fresh and the conversations along the way made the course a unique experience of our vacation in Japan. We would recommend this course with Kana to anyone who is traveling in Kyoto☺️ Thanks again for the great time Kana❤️

e are able to eat fish but no shellfish (prawn/ lobster or eel. Nor are we able to eat pork products.
Chicken , salmon, beef and tuna are fine. Is this possible
Written 17 November 2023
From memory you make 6 kinds of large bite sized sushi rolls: salmon, tuna, egg, corn and mayonnaise tin type tuna, unknown white fish x 2. Then you make a full avocado salmon roll and cut it up. It’s a lot!
I remember her saying that she shops/buys the fish locally from the market the morning of your class (super fresh), so the choices may also depend on what’s available or in season.
But 100% there was no chicken, beef, pork or anything cooked when I did it. And no eel, lobster and don’t remember prawn.
Suggest emailing ahead of time and specifying if there’s something in particular you can’t have? They seemed super friendly and responsive via email.
Written 17 November 2023
Hi. They do offer a vegetarian option however, all guests from the various groups in attendance will need to opt for that option (as it’s not really possible to cater for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians at the same time during a workshop). As such, it’s best to reserve a Private Workshop for just your group at which time you can request a vegetarian option just for yourselves.
