Great food tour at Kyoto Nishiki Market by Ninja Food tour
We had a great time to explore so many new items at the market today with our guide Mana. We had great conversations about food, Kyoto and brief history of the market. When she pointed out the lantern with the name of shop that we stopped by at the Nishiki Tenmangu shrine, it really clicked.

    Great tour experience and company
Great tour getting to try foods I wouldn't have thought to try or know how to ask for at Nishiki Market, along with learning about the history. CJ was a lovely tour guide. The company was also very helpful when I had a rescheduling issue. I would book a tour with them again, whether in Kyoto or another city. Do heed the 10-min early meet up timing - that is your actual meeting time (e.g. 10:50 AM). It's not really a buffer time to 11AM. I encountered this at other Japanese tours too - it might be a cultural thing.

    Nishiki market food tour
We had CJ on the Nishiki market food tour. She was very engaging and we tried so many delicious foods we wouldn’t have if we did it ourselves.

    A taste of Kyoto
This food tour was fabulous! We were able to taste some of Kyoto’s specialties and learn all about the different types of sake. The group was small, 7 including our tour guide Yuri, which made the experience that much nicer! I highly recommend this food tour!

    Brilliant Market Tour
CJ is a fantastic guide, enthusiastic and knowledgeable. We enjoyed tasting the food and learning about it and the market. It was a great few hours and I would recommend it to anyone interested in Japanese food.

Loved the Nishiki market food tour!
We loved the Nishiki Market food tour with C.J. She is incredibly personable and knowledgeable about the local foods and knows exactly where to stop! We tried some things we never would have on our own and learned a lot about the market and it’s vendors. And we made a sake pit stop as well, which was fun. I’d highly recommend the tour and the guide!

A nice way to experience Nishiki market
Our crew of 5 (2 adults, 2 teenagers, and a kid) had a fun lunch tour of Nishiki Market with our guide CJ. CJ was friendly and knowledgeable and helped us navigate the market when the language barrier would have made it difficult. She had us try food we wouldn’t have normally and we all had fun. Our only complaint is that we didn’t really enjoy a lot of the food. Some of it was amazing (like the beef sushi) but other pieces (like the croquets) weren’t very good. We also (as I think is typical for food tours) weren’t given any choice at most of the stops, which was a bummer because we probably would have chosen something else from most stops. Overall, this tour is a fun way to experience the food market and CJ was great, but the food just wasn’t our favorite.

    Enlightning and delightful experience
Anyone wishing to gain a better understanding of the vast and seemingly impenetrable world of Japanese food would do well to take this tour. Our guide, C. J. displayed an insider’s grasp of this complex cuisine centuries in the making. The guided tour of the Nishiki Market alone justified the cost. Add to that the food we sampled along the way, and you have a rich and satisfying experience. Afterwards we met several fellow tour members getting matcha ice cream in the market at the shop C.J. pointed out. We agreed it had been a memorable experience, wonderful insight into this ancient and enigmatic culture.

Great experience and worth the money
I have visited Japan many times and I am quite familiar with Japanese food in general but this was a wonderful experience for me. I sampled familiar and unfamiliar dishes but got an opportunity to see some unique restaurants that I wouldn't have stumbled upon on my own. My guide Moe was friendly and knowledgable. Highly recommend even if you are experienced with japanese food.

    Fantastic evening in Kyoto
We had a wonderful evening with Yuta. We tried several different foods, some of which seemed pretty exotic. Everything was delicious! It was great to see different restaurants and a little of Nishiki market. Yuta was very knowledgeable and friendly. I recommend this tour to anyone who likes to learn about cultures through food and to anyone who is open to trying new cuisines.

    Awesome Night Tour!
Hit the Nishiki Market in the early evening before it closes, then hop to several izakayas in the area for enough food and drink to leave you super full!! Our tour guide Moe was really friendly and knowledgeable, and others in the small tour group were like minded foodies.

The tour and our guide CJ were great. Kyoto is a beautiful city and the walking tour as we made our way from restaurant to restaurant was (almost) as enjoyable as the food was interesting and tasty. The tour started at the Nishiki Market and ended at Pontocho Alley (which has to be one of the quintessential Kyoto foodie streets). We were certainly introduced to food we would never have tried on our own such as Ayu ( a whole sweet tiny fish). Her suggestions for other local restaurants were spot on. Thanks CJ !!

Cannot recommend this tour more highly! 10/10.
C.J. from Ninja Food Tours was incredible! We were treated to a phenomenal night with a variety of the best of Kyoto food. We had everything from street food to carefully crafted farm-to-table cuisine, along with some tasty cocktails. What impressed me most was the thoughtfulness of the selections. C.J. has clearly cultivated excellent relationships with some incredible restaurants and chefs spanning several areas around Kyoto. This is not your standard fare, this is geared towards an adventurous foodie palate and it absolutely delivered. Not only did we get a wide variety of stellar food options, we were treated to some great parts of the city.
The value for the cost was excellent! C.J. even followed up the next day with a full list of all the places she had taken us and links to their Google map location, as well as made some helpful suggestions on additional places in Kyoto that weren't on our tour. We took her suggestions and had a whole second day of excellent cuisine. She was also kind enough to accommodate several food allergies/restrictions in our group. This tour was an excellent way to be introduced to Kyoto, the Japanese culture, and really set the stage for the rest of our visit.
A couple of tips for this tour: Wear comfortable shoes and come hungry! It was also incredibly hot in Kyoto in August and while most restaurants had A/C, you should plan for the weather since this is an outdoor walking tour. Prepare to socialize: This is a group activity and chatting with the other attendants was a big part of the fun.

What a great way to learn about the people of Kyoto! First a sparkling sake taste and off to the local market which runs for several blocks for a soy donut (tastes better than it sounds) and some tempura eel - also tasty. First restaurant for an Obanzai meal and Yuta, our guide explained everything in great detail. Plum wine is delicious and just watch the bonito flakes 😳 while you learn of the traditional cooking of the locals. We then enjoyed 2 more restaurants to experience Yakinuki (great experience) and a real tempura meal. It was all so much fun and filling you will certainly enjoy this tour.

Sample a range of Japanese foods at the markets, followed be 3 restaurants. Our host, Kunai, was was warm, friendly and informative. She gave us insights into different aspects of life in Japan. One restaurant took us into geisha area - a very lively neighbourhood we would never have otherwise discovered. Food was plentiful and authentically Japanese. A very enjoyable experience.

Excellent food tour - highly recommend. There were only four of us on this tour which was great. Our guide, Chikako was extremely friendly and knowledgeable about all things Japan and Japanese food. She was happy to share information and stories about her life in Japan. On this tour we tasted so many interesting and delicious things. Chikako was great at selecting menu items that weren't thing we would think to try but were absolutely delicious.

We just had the most amazing tour with CJ from Ninja Food Tour. Everything was perfect, she introduced us to different food types at the market, and then to three different type of restaurants. She is extremely knowledgeable about Sake and gave us a wonderful tasting experience, with detailed explanations. You will end up very full and with a very reach experience.

I would definitely recommend this and in fact we are just booking a food tour with them in Tokyo!!! Can’t wait.

Great experience with our tour guide Moe! This was definitely one of the highlights of our family trip to Kyoto. Moe took us to 4 spots to sample food and drink : appetizer at Nishiki Market, a steak restaurant, a seafood restaurant, and a tempura restaurant. The food was delicious and included items we never would have tried or would know how to order on our own. By the end of the night, we were all stuffed! Moe was fun, easy to talk to, and had a lot of great stories to tell. My two teenagers also enjoyed this tour with Moe.

Our group of six - family and friends, recently enjoyed a tour with CJ. It was a great introduction to Kyoto, the markets and local dishes. It was obvious CJ had a great relationship with the bars and restaurants we visited and a thorough understanding of customs etc. There was plenty of variety and no one in our group left hungry. CJ's follow up email provided recommendations that we visited over the next few days. The booking process with Ninja was easy and professional. Highly recommend this company and tour to all ages.

This was our only food tour in Japan and after we wrapped up the night I had wished we booked one in every city we visited! Sohei was a phenomenal tour guide and was able to take us to locations and order us food that we would have never thought to get. He was knowledgeable and a blast to travel around the streets of Kyoto with! Couldn’t recommend him and this food tour more!

What a great night we had on our Ninja Food Tour through the street s of Kyoto. Mana met us right on time at the designated meeting point. Communication leading up to the tour was informative, responsive and directions were easy to follow. Mana was extremely knowledgeable in Japanese custom, cuisine, history and some random subjects we raised. The route was easy to walk, very varied and interesting and the many food stops absolutely delicious. Mana also gave us a crash course in the different varieties and qualities of Sake. This tour is a must do, particularly if it is your first visit to Japan. Mana also gave us some great tips and information to assist us in our journey around Japan. I highly recommend the Ninja Food tour for all those foodies visiting Kyoto or if you just want a fun night out. Definitely a night to remember.
