About
Tea ceremony lies at the heart of Japanese culture, and to enjoy this centuries old ritual will provide a deeper understanding of the history, architecture and tastes of our home. We want your time with us to be a rich and enjoyable one, and to that end we encourage guests to not only participate but actively ask any questions they might have about Japan and tea ceremony. At Camellia authenticity and inclusivity are very important, and we strive to provide memories our guests will treasure.

What to expect
  • At the start of your session, your instructor will welcome you with a brief introduction to the history and culture surrounding tea, before performing the tea ceremony itself. After being served a small traditional sweet, you will have the opportunity to make your own bowl of frothy Matcha under the guidance of your instructor. During your time with us we do hope you will ask questions. Photos are permitted throughout, though we ask you to turn off your flash and respect other guests (short videos are permitted for private tea ceremonies). Guests typically sit on the floor for tea ceremony, but we do have low chairs and tables for those who would prefer them.

Camellia Flower Teahouse is not only a sacred moment to witness a Japanese tea ceremony, but an invitation to a seemingly secret world stemmed in honor, history, tradition, and intention. My husband and I not only understood how to make delicious matcha tea by the end of our session, but we gained eye-opening knowledge to every detail that accompanies a Japanese tea ceremony; from the graceful purpose of each movement, and the mindfulness of every thought, to the respect of every interaction. I was truly moved by the experience in ways I did not expect. Our tea master Nao welcomed us with such elegance, warmth, and hospitality, and she took time to carefully explain every aspect surrounding the ceremony. It was a rainy afternoon and the traditional teahouse was a picturesque setting that transported me back in time. I even purchased a matcha tea set that I will cherish. I plan to make matcha tea on a regular basis now and I will reserve each tea-making time as a moment of meditation and intention for myself. Thank you so much Camellia Flower Teahouse! I will carry what I learned from this experience with me forever!

I enjoyed an authentic tea ceremony wearing a kimono here. It was a really lovely experience with my family and the staff spoke english as well as Japanese. I would recommend to go here if you are looking for a tea ceremony on your visit to Kyoto.

It was poring rain and freezing cold and we welcomed the warmth of the old tea house.
Our tea master Nao, was outstanding. She spoke excellent English and explained all the rituals and philosophies of the tea ceremony.

The setting is beautiful, and Nao's performance was ryrthic and relaxing.

Tea was delicious, and it was fun to make our own tea too!

A great way to spend an hour!

We arrived into Kyoto around 12.45pm and made a late call to our Ryokan to book something close by. Our children, boys 9 and 11 were reluctant initially but Tetsuya and the ladies at Camelia made the process very simple and cosy. They accommodated us into a 2pm session
Tucked away off the main drag, watch out for the small sign post (street bollard actually between 2 shops), not far up from the Park Hyatt Kyoto, on the right if your heading uphill on Senneizaka
The history lesson, not too long and hands on trial at making Matcha tea was an unforgettable experience and our boys loved it! Not too “touristy” and felt very cosy.

Dear SGnomads09, Greetings from Kyoto. Thank you for taking the time to write a review, and describe your experiences at the teahouse. We are so glad that you felt welcomed as a family, as children are often unsure what to make of tea ceremony. Tetsuya especially sends his very best wishes, and hopes the rest of your trip was a memorable one. It's wonderful to hear that your sons enjoyed making Matcha, and we hope you will have an opportunity to pop in and see us if ever you find yourselves in Kyoto again. All the best!
