About
Get away from the crowds and spend a wonderful day in Arashiyama which will undoubtedly stand out in your mind as you think back to your time here in Kyoto. With a small group of 7 members or less you are ensured an authentic and intimate experience. We begin with a morning stroll through the lush garden of one of Japan’s first Zen temples dating back over 1,000 years. We then head into the foothills and as we peacefully stroll back to town we visit twelve hundred stone Buddhas on a hillside, an Edo period cafe, an ancient burial ground, a temple founded by two former geisha, a working pottery studio, the villa of a silent film actor, a majestic bamboo grove, and the "shrine of love'. All this as we browse shops filled with handmade goods and enjoy a delicious traditional lunch. Important Note: Each guest is required to bring an additional 5,500 yen (cash) for admission tickets and lunch.

immersive and magical

This was such a delightful sensory experience! We were fascinated with the way Andrew blended historical and current footage to give a sense of the temple over time. The closest thing to being there! Thank you Andrew, will book another one of your tours.

A wonderful experience
Nov 2020
It was a wonderful experience, and not our first one with Andrew.

His tours are highly recommendable - and this one was spectacular. Excellent videos, good story behind the Temple Transformation and a presentation that came from heart.

Thanks a lot, Andrew, and we are looking forward to meeting with you again!

I can't say enough good things about Andrew and his tours. When my husband and I visited kyoto a few years ago the time we spent with Andrew was the highlight of our trip and now he has pivoted to doing these incredible online emersive experiences. So excited to take all of them as they are released! Just took the first of what I hope are many!

Wonderful Virtual Get Away
Oct 2020
We did the online tour of the Otagi Nenbutsuji Temple and it was wonderful. Andrew is very knowledgeable and friendly. The videos were beautiful, and it was such an interesting history, I can’t wait to visit in person. It was a welcome get away during this Covid time. It felt like we were there! Very well done.

Amazing Experience
Sep 2020
Amazing Experience.
This is my fourth experience with An Design.
Had the pleasure of spending two days in Kyoto with Andrew exploring many Zen gardens and temples back in February right before the Pandemic and it was truly memorable.
Couple of month's ago went on his virtual tour Zen Gardens, Zen Minds and it was great.
Last night I had the pleasure revisiting Kyoto:Descending Arashimaya and it was amazing.
His new experience takes you through with beautiful videos that make you feel that you are there.
Beautiful photography and very well edited and Andrews knowledge and gift for story telling makes it very special and engaging. Also great sharing it with people from all over. I was in West Palm Beach, Florida with gusts in San Diego, California and Seattle Washington.
Highly recommend An Design visual Experiences and tours.
Looking forward to new experiences.
Best regards;
Frank

Deep-dive into fascinating culture and history of Kyoto
Mar 2020
I have lived in Kyoto for about 12 years, and had a personal conclusion that Arashiyama is just a touristy crowded area. I recently happened to know about an intriguing Arashiyama tour guided by an American who is a former Japanese gardener in Kyoto… Interesting… Then, participating Andrew’s tour “Descending Arashiyama” completely changed my thought.

Instead of crawling in the touristy main streets, we took a taxi for a while to reach up to the quiet and inspirational mountainside where we started off the tour. My impression with “crowded Arashiyama” had gone already at this moment. He just didn’t take us to some minor location to be simply different, but actually he first took us to Otagi Nenbutsu-ji Temple, which is now the very place I definitely would like to take my guest next time I visit Arashiyama. I have no idea how he had found the temple and why such a fascinating place is not very known even among Japanese people, but later I found that that is one of the unique elements of Andrew’s tour: Not typical, but definitely meaningful.

What we enjoyed as well throughout the descending tour was the communication between Anderew and the local people. At the potter’s atelier, at the washi (Japanese handmade paper) shop, at the very authentic hillside tearoom, Andrew and the hosts greeted each other like real friends and chatting even about personal topics in fluent Japanese. Their great relationship even made us feel very welcome and somehow at home!

All the other details such as the local trivia about the mountain-side tunnel (I don’t think any guidebook talks about it!), his selection of the picnic spot (We felt as if we were the royal family who possess such a wonderful garden), his kind introduction of the participating members (We could feel we had been already friends), the child-friendly atmosphere (I participated with my wife and a 3-year-old daughter)… made us so satisfied.

I am a Kyoto-based Japanese. But I won’t hesitate at all to try Andrew’s another tour to deep-dive into fascinating culture and history of Kyoto.

日本在住、京都在住の方にもお薦めします!

Beautiful places off the beaten track!
Mar 2020
The tour was excellent, Andrew is amazing! There is so much more to see in Kyoto city apart from the most famous sights. I would have missed these places, which Andrew picked for his tour. He was very knowledgeable and explained a lot about the places we visited. Highly recommended!!

So much more than the bamboo path
Mar 2020
I decided to take the tour «Descending Arashiyama» after participating in «Zen garden, zen mind» with Andrew. The garden-tour was amazing so I had high expectations when joining Andrew in Arashiyama. And I wasn’t disappointed – I had been to Arashiyama five times before but only during the tour with Andrew I felt that I truly and deeply experienced this area. The tour is very well designed, in a way that allows to avoid the crowds as much as possible. Andrew told stories that you would not find in the guide and drew my attention to aspects that I had overlooked when I was doing sightseeing on my own. He also showed us some hidden gems that are not easy to discover when you just pass-by
Andrew’s extremely competent guiding made me truly appreciate and understand the meaning and beauty of Arashiyama. Arashiyama is so much more than the bamboo path and with Andrew’s expertise this place got a completely new dimension.
