Amazing opportunity to be in contact with the real Japan
The teacher only spoke Japanese but two students were there to help with the translation (English) so no problem. It was a lot of fun, super friendly and patient. It is not a regular Archery class it is a traditional class with a lot of rules and very different from the western style.

He lives on the second floor of his house, and the first floor has been converted into an archery area.

But there were many things inside the house besides bows and arrows. It felt like entering a house from a fairy tale.

The teacher who taught me archery was a very funny person.

He was very happy when I told him that I could speak Japanese, and he took out his big old notebook and proudly told me about how he had taught so many foreign tourists how to shoot archery.

An hour has passed so quickly, so what does that mean?
    I like it very much.

Sensei was so kind and patient. It was my first time trying archery at all, and the style of teaching was perfect. I had a lot of fun and the lesson passed too quickly. I want to continue! The practice space on Tuesdays is also pretty magical— the sensei built the space himself to preserve the land around the area.

I will first point out that if you are looking to do archery, this is not the experience to book. There are locations in Kyoto that allow you to do that without prior booking. This experience instead is highlighting the traditions of Kyudo, and the spiritual side of Japanese archery. If you want a more relaxing experience to take in the more artful side of archery, then this is what you want. I gave it a 5 star review as this was what I was more interested in.

When we went, our instructor is alone and he knows very little English. However, the language barrier wasn't much of an issue, as he does give you a booklet that was in English and highlights the motions you will do, and he will walk you through each motion each time you shoot as well.
He was very patient with us, and though he gave his instructions in Japanese, he also added simple gestures and motions to get what he wanted to explain so you didn't feel lost. I found while going through the techniques he was teaching us that I felt very at ease and relaxed.

If you are interested in the more spiritual and artful archery style of Japan, then you'd enjoy this experience. Just remember to take your time and savor the experience, as it is more relaxing than a competition while you are here.

The trip advisor page gave conflicting instructions on where to meet. I ended up showing up at the wrong place. To their credit, the operators contacted me almost immediately after they realized I had not shown up, and set up a make-up class for the next day - this time with clear instructions.

The class itself was very good and very enlightening. A promised intro video never materialized. Instead, we were told to read a few pages from a kyudo manual (in English, mercifully). I believe a serious kyudo student is not allowed to shoot an arrow in the first year of training. So, the opportunity to shoot 3 or 4 arrows (with heavy instructor assistance) is clearly an experience designed for the tourist. The instructor was a wonderful, older gentleman, who unfortunately spoke only Japanese. There was a bilingual person in the group who made communication possible, but awkward. I never found out if she had been sent by the operators, or was there by chance. Not knowing this prevented me from trying to set up a follow up individual class, which was part of my original plan. This said, I thoroughly enjoyed my experience, despite all its shortcomings.

The instructor was an older man, who was so nice and enthusiastic about archery, its art, story and values. Even though he only spoke Japanese and therefore communicating was not easy, you could clearly see how experienced he is and how much he loves his job and easily managed to make us feel very welcomed and AS enthusiastic about it. I was amazed by how unimportant language seems to be for understanding the core values of such a honorable sport when you have a good teacher.

It was one of the best and most fun experiences of our whole Japan holiday and I am glad we did it and were able to make quite a few nice and fun memories to look back upon!

What an authentic experience. Our lesson was in a small space, seems like in a garage of someone’s house. The teacher speaks no English but his daughter(?) translated. It’s important to know this is not about shooting arrows, it’s about the art of Japanese archery, very meditative and purposeful. You only shoot 4 times. But it is special insight into Japanese culture and probably once in a lifetime for this American woman.

My wife and I really enjoyed this. I think it helps if you speak a little Japanese. You don't get too many shots (maybe 4 each), but the instructor helps you through each with care. They seem to have a lot of passion for the art and enjoy showing it to foreigners.

My partner and I had one of the most interesting educational introductory lessons of Kyudo. The instructor, Yamaguchi Sensei speaks very little english, so be prepared for that, but his physical corrections and instructions are excellent. You start by reading about the practice and the instructions are written in English, and then he makes corrections for you as you practice. Yamaguchi Sensei knows what he is doing, he is patient and supportive, but firm in his instructions and corrections. I have developed a newfound respect and love of this traditional sport and I hope to learn more in the future. Arigato Sensei.

Everything from the first minute was wonderful. Our teacher did not have a lot of English but it wasn’t necessary because the instruction was done together in tandem with him and he gave us the rituals of Japanese archery with all the emotional feeling and intensity of the art. I highly recommend this experience.

It was great privilege to meet with the sensei and listen to his advices on the art of kyudo. I’m 100% hooked to the Japanese archery. Highly recommend this unforgettable experience. It will change your perception of archery and hopefully help you to learn a bit more about yourself as well.
