Visiting Rocinha was already highlight of our trip, but to have Alberto as a guide was out of this world. He seems to know just about everyone there and he is so knowledgeable. We got all information and more about the history and present situation in the favela. The visit is super safe and, let me be clear, not that physically demanding, even with my 150+ kg. We finished the visit with the lunch at the local restaurant and it was well worth it, as we were the only non-locals (and kind of attraction).

Highly highly recommend!

If you're interested in visiting one of Rio's favelas in an interactive and humanising way as opposed to just driving through in a vehicle like you're on a safari then i'd highly recommend this tour. Our guide Carlos (a resident of the favela) was incredibly and genuinely passionate about sharing the stories of his neighbourhood and its people. A very educational and eye opening tour. Photos are generally permitted but there are certain areas where we were told not to at the respect and request of the people in the area. Pick up and drop off was easy and smooth and the transport vehicle was comfortable. A highlight of my trip to Rio!

It's a tour which brings you to the real picture of Rio, seeing another race of Brazil. People here will tell you about different views towards the city, not just the bright side people know from Olympics. It's worth going if you visit Rio. The tour is safe as long as u follow the guide.

Amazing experience all because of the guide, Alberto. Make sure you get him for the tour because he has great energy, makes you feel completely safe, and shares so many of his personal experiences with you. I know that I wouldn't have enjoyed the tour nearly as much without him! Thanks so much Alberto :)

Does what it says - a small group of about 10 of various nationalities were given a guided walk from the top of the favela through the small winding alleys etc down to a finishing point with a bar stop included for a caipirinha. Very interesting and aided by commentary from our local guide. Bit of an eye opener but perfectly safe all the way.

Very interesting walk and an experience for life. The guide, Carlos, was informative, enthusiastic, funny, outgoing and his english is excellent. He is a Rocinha native and tells the favela story from this perspective, and in a way he is one of few favela resident voices out to the outsiders. Carlos also took us to a few shops/bars, which made us contribute to the local businesses. So this is something else than a «look at these poor people»-safari. This is more educational, it contributes, and it gives the community a voice. We did not only go down the main road, but also through the narrow alleyways. And it felt perfectly safe all the way.

The Rocinha walking tour is an excellent cultural experience and a “must do” for Rio visitors. My apprehension coming in was that it might be offensive to Rocinha residents for me to come in to their city. What I found was that Rocinha residents were happy to have me there. Rafael is a local and he did a great job of showing me where he’s from! He knows many people in Rocinha and it was fun to chat with his friends. The tour itself was informative and fun. I’d recommend it to anyone!

To be honest, one of the best experienced in Rio!!! Carlos, our guide, showed us his hone, Favela Rochina, while explaining the daiky lifee as well as the origens of it. Moreover, his style of explaining things, full of feeling, live and passion really kept my attention in a way, I had not expected!
Your way of thinking about favelas, ince you've done the tour, will definatelly change!
Super highly recommended and it is not dangerous at all!! As all miths about Favela says... :)
Thank you very much Carlos for this amazing tour!!

This was a very informative tour. I think to truly experience what Rio De Janeiro really is it's important to also tour a Favela. There was so much going on in a Favela I never knew, I was very surprised. Out guide actually lived in the Favela he showed us! A lot of stereotypes were broken during this tour. I never felt unsafe or uneasy it was a chill environment with a lot going on. Like a mini city inside the city.

The tour itself is about 3 and a half to four hours, that I believe is too long. I think based on what we saw and talked about this could have been an 2 hour tour. Also without sounding to high and mightly, the van did not have AC which made the ride to the Favela a bit uncomfortable.

Thanks for your review. We really appreciate your time. As for the AC. we were recommended by our local authorities NOT to use it to avoid the spread of covid. However, we fully understand you and apologise for the inconvenient. kind regards and we wish you all the best

Walking tour with a lot of background with a local guide. Group tour where a minibus takes you to the top of Rocinhas and you walk down with a pickup at the bottom. Caipi at the end was a bit pricey. Altogether highly recommended.
Not sure about the statement of the guide that you can safely walk through any of the favelas in Rio with your SLR camera and without a guide ;)

Bruno S
Thanks a lot for your review. We really appreciate your time in writing to us and sharing your experience with everyone. However, it is really essential to state that we do not encourage anyone to visit a Favela on their own, simply because there are more than 1000 Favelas in Rio and we do not know the safety situation in each one of them. Nevertheless, Rocinha Favela has been the only Favela which we work closely since 2002 and with local tour guides. Last but not least, we would like to wish you a great day from all of us :)
