Meet a driver at your Luang Prabang hotel for 8:30am departure to a nearby village, where you'll meet a host family, then head off to the market to buy ingredients. You’ll soon be familiar with galangal and lemongrass, and be able to identify the diverse herbs that are the heart of Lao cooking.
With your ingredients bagged up, head back to the family house and get ready to cook. Laos’ cuisine is similar to Thai, but can be packed with chiles and quite spicy.
Depending on the seasonal availability of ingredients, you might make laap, a spicy salad of minced pork or chicken with sticky rice, or the popular green papaya salad with shrimp paste, sugar, and lime juice. When the meal is ready, sit down and taste-test your cooking skills, with time for an after-lunch stroll through the village. This 4-hour cooking class excursion concludes with return transfer to Luang Prabang.
