Best cooking class in Kandy
This was such a wonderful cooking course.
We are three friends and wanted to learn some of the cooking recipes of Sri Lanka.
First we visited the local Kandy market where we bought some vegetables, rice and other things we need for cooking.
Shan is well known at the market and explained a lot to the different spices and ingredients we used for our meal.
Since we arrived Shans home, the family were so welcoming and friendly, so you really feel like being a part of them.
We learned a lot, like opening coconuts, making rice flour and coconut milk.
The best thing is, that you are away from tourist area, so you get so much insights of Sri Lankan way of life and tradition.
We also had a walk through some rice and vegetables fields around the village.
We prepared so many delicious dishes which we could taste afterwards and some recipes with ingredients we will also have in the western kitchen.
It was really fun to cook together.
We can only recommend this cooking class.
Thank you so much for that great day!

Great experience
Mar 2020 • Friends
We wanted to do a traditionell cooking class and took the best choice.
Shan and his family were very friendly and flexible. We booked the class just one day before and for them it was less time to prepare some things so they offered us a course at the afternoon from 3pm to 8.30pm. It was perfect because the weather gets a little bit colder and it was more comfortable to eat outside and prepare all the things. Before preparing we visited a local market and get a good impression about the locals and the different typ of foods.

Nice cooking class
Mar 2020 • Couples
We booked the cooking class because we like cooking and we would like to learn more about sri Lankan dishes. We did not only learn how to cook several dishes and tried them, we were also shown how traditional sri lankan cooking was done. For example grinding the rice for rice flour. The family was very nice and even adapted the menu because we indicated that we like dahl. Be aware of the fact that you do buy the ingredients yourself at the market, but this should not more than 15 USD for 2 persons. We had a great experience and we would recommend it

Amazing experience of true Sri Lankan food and culture!
Dec 2019 • Couples
My wife and I took this course as we wanted to learn about what makes Sri Lankan food special. Not only did we find this out, but we also got to see for ourselves what Sri Lankan cooking culture is all about.

Shan, the host, collected us from our guest house free of charge and took us to a local market, filled with every fruit, vegetable, grain spice and meat you could imagine. We were guided through the market and given a list of all the ingredients we would need, which made things easy and fun! Shan was explaining all the different foods as we went and it was a great experience in itself.

We then went about 20 minutes outside kandy to the small village where Shan and his wonderful family live. (Side note, it was Christmas holidays so his kids were there giving us an audience and taking pictures as we cooked, it was like having our own cooking show!) Shan and his family have an authentic traditional Sri Lankan clay building where they can cook, to show the traditional elements of how people prepare food in Sri Lanka. We used a giant pestle and mortar to refine the rice, and a big manual grinder to make the rice flour. We also got a complimentary king coconut to enjoy from one of Shans many coconut trees in his garden!

We then moved into his modern kitchen, where his wife and Shan himself guided us through making 5-6 seperate dishes. We both were involved in all aspects of the food prep, it wasn’t just a case of watching we did most of the chopping and seasoning (with the help of Shan and his wife of course).

While we were cooking we had lots of conversation with Shan and he was explaining every step of what we were doing and it made the whole experience really interesting as well as fun.

Next, as the food was finishing and the banana leaves were being cut for our plates(!) we had a short walk around the rice paddies that surround Shan’s house. It was a really peaceful moment and the surroundings are truly beautiful.

Last the best part - eating! The food was sensational and every dish was such beautiful vibrant colours. The best lunch I’ve had in Sri Lanka!

Overall I cannot recommend this highly enough. It’s not just a cooking class, it’s a true experience of Sri Lankan tradition away from the bigger cities, and what Shan and his family are doing is just wonderful. Absolutely 5*’s!

Great Class about authentic cooking and culture
Jul 2019 • Couples
My wife and I took this cooking class on our recent trip to Sri Lanka while we were in Kandy City. We were picked up at our hotel by Shan, and taken to a local market in Kandy to gather ingredients for the class. Shan was very pleasant, and informative about prices, quantities, and freshness of the produce, and proteins we were gathering. Prices for these items were relatively inexpensive. On the way to the class, Shan gave us a history about Sri Lankan cuisine, and culture. It was about a 20 minute ride from Kandy to the class. Once we arrived, we were welcomed by Shan's wife and Mother, and given fresh King coconut. We were seated in an old fashioned Sri Lankan home that was built for this cooking class, and shown how food was prepared before all of the modern technology. It was very interesting and very informative to see how everything was prepared. We did not cook in the old school structure, other than the rice. We went inside to the house and prepared the food in a modern kitchen. Although Shan and his family, were directing us, we were able to be very hands on with the cooking process throughout our time there. Everyone was patient, and very informative while the class was going.

Once everything was made, we were seated back in the original Sri Lankan structure which made our experience feel very authentic. The food was amazing thanks to all of the help, and direction,

My wife and I had an amazing experience and highly recommend this class for anyone who is in the Kandy region of Sri Lanka. You will not be disappointed!!

Great experience!
Mar 2019 • Solo
The class will start from where you come to the hotel by car and go to the market and shop for ingredients. It is very good for those who have the food they want to cook. Learning to cook with fresh vegetables harvested from the field in a village kitchen located a little away is a great experience! All dishes made with freshly ground spices using stone tools are great. I can feel very happy because I can eat the food I wanted to learn and try to eat. This cooking class with a warm atmosphere is highly recommended!
