- nancyf2560 contributionsBucket list trip done!Did this trip today. It was a 4 hour train journey from Delhi to Kalka and trains ran to time. Then Toy train Kalka to Shimla. Great views and was a lovely thing to do but I was SO pleased to get to Shimla. After 3 hours I was starting to feel uncomfortable (in first class) in my seat but it’s understandable. It’s a very old train. If it’s on your bucket list then do it!Written 23 January 2025
- ashishiyengar0 contributionsBucket list and must do a journey in Toy Train with ur little ones and make them experience Incredible India!!Lovely experience and one of the must do in ur bucket list. Journey starts from Kalka to Shimla which is around 96Kms and travel time is of 5hrs but those 5 hrs are memorable one where you get a chance to see the nature at its best. It goes through small lanes with house on both sides sometimes. National highway is also visible. Train does stops at couple of locations where you can get something to eat but then it needs to be fast as the halt time is only for 2 mins. The journey takes you back to those old songs of toy trains.Written 5 May 2024
- Harvey44550 contributionsNot actually a toy, but a great train journeyIf you ever get a chance to visit Shimla, a tourist town in the foothills of the Himalayas, go by the toy train. First of all, this is not a 'toy' train but a narrow gauge railway that runs up to Shimla through the mountains. The railway was built to carry tea but now carries passengers. The carriages are a bit basic and the journey takes about 5hrs, but it is fun! There are great views, especially if you sit on the right hand side of the carriage as you face the front of the train. You'll pass through 103 tunnels on the way and there is at least a one planned stop to stretch your legs.Written 29 April 2024
- Nayadiv0 contributionsKalka to ShimlaWe took the Himalayan Queen Kalka to Shimla. Good timing around midday and around 5 hours. Try to sit on the right hand side. They are single seats but I managed to get a seat behind my husband. Well worth it. Views are spectacular. We booked FC carriage. Great to see winding train ahead of us. Train is not luxurious but adequate. We were advised to take this train as it would have been dark had we taken the earlier ones. Note: the train stops only for a few minutes at the 2 stations. It will start moving without notice so if you step out to buy snacks you could get caught out!Written 26 December 2023
- juliebarrett19640 contributionsfabulous nostalgic tripAfter the storm damage, were worried the trip would never happen. SO excited. 5 hours of scenery, nostalgie, waving people, truly magical experience. Take drinks and snacks with you as stops are rare and quick.Written 24 November 2023
- JenAnnie0 contributionsGreat Train Journey. We left the Hotel at Shimla & took the Toy Train down to Dharampur Station . Before getting in cars down to New Delhi. We enjoyed the Toy train journey as it was a real experience, all the doors were left open & people standing on the running board of the Train to take photographs. We went over bridges & through tunnels amazing.Written 8 April 2023

- Kuldeep D0 contributionsA Fascinating "Hill"arious Ride - Indeed !!Finally - A Spontaneous Decision & With Some Real Luck & Persistence, This Dream Journey Which Could Not be Realised So Many Times Earlier - Year on Year Basis Owing to Feasibility, Busy Schedules - Favorite Time Slot's & Train's Availability - Family Members Availability etc. etc. - We Got a Chance to Fulfill Our Long Standing Dream in July 2019. Lady Luck Was on Our Side & With God's Hand Showering Blessings Upon My Family . We Started on Early Morning From Kalka Ji Railway Station at 5:05 AM on 4/07/2019. I Would Love to Recall the Experience as one of The Sweetest Memories of My Life & of Family Times Together. HEre is The Chain of Events : on 3rd of July I spotted a few Vacant FC Seats in Kalka Shimla Special Train No. 52459 . Instantly Made The TATKAL Booking For Window Seats Could Find Three Window Seats Luckily with One No Choice (Got Seat Nos. 4(W), 5 1(W),6(W) in Coach F5 Started From Chandigarh Early at 4:00 AM (Hired a CAB For The Purpose - INR 1400 Approx - Drop Only). Arrived at Kalka Station in Just 25 Minutes. While Family Waited For Some Time in AC Waiting Room - I Confirmed The Platform From Which My Train Will be Departing. Tip : DO REMEMBER YOUR TRAIN No. & NAME. Was Surprised To See So Many Trains In Queue For Departure on Different Lines in Parallel Platforms - Its Very EAsy To Get Confused Unless You DO NOT REMEMBER Your Train's Exact Number & VERIFY it on a Train COACH. It Started Raining Heavily As Soon As We Were to Board The Train But We Settled Quickly After Contacting TTE / GUARD Who Saw ERS on My Mobile. Now The Enjoyment Started Pretty Soon as We Left Kalka & Industrial Town of Parwanoo (Whew) Behind . After 15 Minutes or so and Sky Was Illuminated Just Before Sunrise And We were Having Breathtaking & Majestic Views of Kasauli Hills & Sanwara . Stopped at Barog ( A World Heritage ) & Perhaps One of The Most Beautiful Hillside Railway Stations in India - Clicked Some Pics. Had Some Local Pakoras / Tea & Some Other Snacks For My Wife > Hem , Daughter > Gunnu & Son > Punnu. Clicked So Many Snaps & Videos & Kids Even Spotted a Grey Black Wild Cat / Little Panther or Vyaghra ( as hill people call it ) in a bush which eloped quicky even before a click - but we all saw a glimpse of it. Immensely Enjoyed The Mist & Fog , Clouds Floating Above Us ! The Views Gradually Unfolded The Beauty & Grandeur of Himachal Valleys & Mountains Starting Solan. Especially Liked The Views Near Taradevi & SummerHill. Arrived at Approx 9:55 at Shimla Railway - Which Again is a Very Good One & Well Maintained With Facilities. Proceeded with our Already Booked Guided Tour in a Group After a While at Approx 11:00 AM. If You Wish To Experience a Piece of Heaven - Go For It - Esp In Rains or Snow.Written 8 January 2020

- HaleKendall0 contributionsFantastic day tourMy tour from New Delhi to Red fort and Raj Ghat was perfect……Fantastic tour day… Loved exploring Red fort and Raj Ghat. Knew lots of interesting stories about the places we visited. During tour went to lunch at a place in a metro station (Rajiv Chowk) area that was good. Thank you for a great day.Written 9 November 2019
- The2Ladies0 contributionsA long rideNot quite a toy train but it does run on a narrow gauge railway . The journey from Kalka where the train starts is a long ride and can be very cramped and uncomfortable. Some of the carriages have wooden seats but we we lucky to get in a carriage with padded seats. We also has 2 toilets 1 either end , one with the hole in the floor one European . Equally smelly . The journey itself is wonderful as it climbed and weaved its way through 102 tunnels and bridges with great views . It took 6 hours to get to Shimla high up in the base on the Himalayas. Wonderful experience.Written 1 November 2019
