The food was really great and our guide Kelvin was both engaging and informative. He was very accommodating with preferences and dietary restrictions so everyone left very full. I would definitely recommend this tour for anyone that's in China for the first time or even people who have been here a while looking to broaden their palette.

Hi Vida - thanks for reviewing UnTour Food Tours! We are so glad we were able to provide dishes that catered to your group's dietary restrictions on this tour! We know how hard it can be traveling through a country with a language barrier like China when you have dietary restrictions, so we have done our best to create experiences that are vegetarian-friendly and food-allergy-friendly wherever possible. Our tours in Beijing are both vegetarian-friendly too, if you’re heading up that way. Happy eats!

Signed up as a fun activity with friends but was pleasantly surprised at how much I learned about the local cuisine as I’ve lived in Shanghai for over 6 years. Our guide Kelvin was not only professional and helpful but also super fun and showed us a great time around a bunch of hole in the wall spots I never would have found by myself. Food and vibes were consistently great the entire night, showed up high expectations that were definitely exceeded

Thanks so much for taking the time to review! We love when local expats join us and learn about a whole new side of Shanghai they've never eaten their way through before. Hope you'll come back and eat with us again soon in SH or Beijing!

My husband and I were visiting our expat son in Shanghai for the third time and thought it would be fun to do a food tour. We deiced to join the wine pairing version of the night eats tour. We were blown away! Patrick our guide was hilarious and super knowledgable about the food and Shanghai. We had never heard anything about Chinese wines before the tour and we were very impressed with both the quality and variety of the wines. Our son, who has been living in Shanghai for almost 6 years was also very impressed with the tour. The restaurants were great and we felt super safe eating there.
Whether you are visiting Shanghai for a day or have lived there for many years I recommend you get a few friends together and take this tour! We can't wait to visit China again and go on another UnTour in Shanghai or Beijing!

Another excellent Untour experience (I started with the Shanghai breakfast on the same day). Our guide Kate took us to multiple restaurants so that we could try food and drinks from various regions. It was nice to go to small off-the-path restaurants and get the local experience. Kate was excellent and explained all the dishes, preparation styles and history behind them. I definitely recommend this tour, especially as a solo traveler who wanted to eat a lot of local dishes!

Thanks so much for joining us for two tours while in Shanghai! We totally agree that the best thing about food tours is getting to sample SO MUCH FOOD in just a few hours, especially when you're traveling solo and have limited stomach/table space. Hope to eat with you again soon!

We did the Shanghai Night Eats Tour with guide Kelvin and it was really a great and fun experience. We stept into restaurants which we wouldn‘t find on our own. Five different cuisines from all over China. Kelvin gave also interesting background informations about the restaurants, the food and the spices. We can definitely recommend the tour and we already went to a few restaurants again to order on our own 😉. Thanks Kelvin!

Patrick and Amy were fabulous tour guides, providing tons of valuable information and a seemingly endless array of food options and drinks to try. No question went unanswered, and they were so kind to help the members of the group with various food sensitivities and dietary restrictions. Patrick and Amy went above and beyond what was expected, even making sure each and every member of the group had a solid way home

Hi Tybard - thanks for taking the time to write a review! We're so glad you enjoyed your time with Patrick & Amy, as well as the food. We work hard to make sure we have great options for all guests, no matter the dietary restriction, so we are so happy to hear the substitutions and additions went well with your group. Thanks again - and we hope to eat with you again the next time you're in China!

Thanks to our great tour guides Patrick & Lauren. It was fun to stroll through Shanghai and experience the authentic taste of Shanghai, Yunnan and Sichuan kitchen combined with short and interesting stories about the dishes. You took great care of my needs for glutenfree food. You were always present and attentive, but also gave our group the space to enjoy our time together.

Hi Mari - we're so glad to hear you enjoyed the tour and the gluten-free options on the route! It can be so tough to find good options, so we've worked hard to create a menu for our gluten-free guests. Makes our day to know it paid off. Hope you'll eat with us again soon!

I enjoyed trying a variety of regional foods. My favorite was the final restaurant, especially when the staff performed a dance! Patrick and Shanshan were friendly and knowledgeable guides, and they worked really hard to ensure that all dietary and drink preferences were provided for. I will definitely join another tour soon!

What a fantastic way to spend 3 hours! I've been living in Shanghai for over 10 years and I must say this tour opened my eyes to such much that I have been missing out on: the history, the preparations, the flavors, the characters, and the all the hidden gems that were unknown to me. The sad part is I'm about to return to the US and wished I spent more time at the restaurants and businesses UnTour took me to. I can confidently say I won't be getting anything like that outside of Shanghai. And even for the people in Shanghai, I'm afraid some of these places will disappear with time as the older generation retires. This is why I feel like it was such a treat and privilege to have been able to experience it and learn from the incredible team at UnTour. Money well spent and looking forward to another tour with UnTour before I leave town forever. Thank you!!!

I really enjoyed this night eats tour. Even though I have lived in Shanghai for 3 years
(this is my 4th), I was still introduced to new foods and local experiences. Each stop brought experiences of food from different provinces around China, so it was great to try lots of different foods and find out the backgrounds of each dish. Our guides Patrick and Shanshan were informative, polite and friendly. I had a great time and would highly recommend this tour!

Hi! Thanks for contacting UnTour Food Tours.
On our Shanghai Night Eats tour, we often have vegetarians and pescatarians join in. We will make substitutions where possible, but the selection of dishes will not be as large. Please keep in mind that dishes will be cooked in kitchens that use the same cooking utensils to cook beef and pork dishes and we cannot guarantee that the utensils and cooking tools have not touched beef/pork.
If you have any other questions, please feel free to reach out.

I will be in Shanghai on 5th December and stay at The Bund Riverside Hotel. How to I get to the meeting point and go back to hotel from the return point? It will be my first time in China and I travel alone. I am not familiar with the subway system in Shanghai at all.
UnTour Food Tours
China43 contributions
Hi Caroline, thanks for your inquiry. Shen is right. The easiest way to get to our tour meeting point is by subway. Your hotel is close to a station on Line 2, which means you will be able to reach our meeting point without having to switch lines. If you would like, you can reach out to us via email, and I can send you detailed instructions and a map of how to reach us via subway. We hope you can join us!
We will be at the New Harbour hotel are main concern is getting to the meeting point is it within walking distance

Hi! Thank you for your question. All our tours are very accessible via the subway system in Shanghai. While none of our tours are within walking distance of the New Harbour hotel, we would be more than happy to send you clear directions to our tour starting points once you have booked in.
We will be staying at the New Harbour hotel . Are main concern is getting to the meet up point . Is it within walking distance .

I’m not sure where that hotel is, but I would take the subway. There was a stop less then 2 blocks from the meeting point. My wife and I went everywhere on the subway super cheap and super easy.

Hi Melissa! Thank you for your question. Yes, all food and beverages are included in the price. If you'd like to purchase anything other than what is served or for example when you particularly liked a food/beverage for takeaway, you may do so by paying in cash in your account. Cheers!

Hi Jason, Thank you for your question. Our official tour meeting point is located very close to the Jiangsu Road Metro Station. We recommend taking the subway/metro from the Rayfront South Bund and budgeting 1 hour of travel time. Let me know if you have any other questions!

UnTour Food Tours

Hi Linda - thanks for reaching out. The tour start point is near Jiangsu Rd metro station. You'll receive the exact details upon confirmation, but it's a 30 minute subway ride from the Peace Hotel, or 15 mins in a car (with light traffic - so we recommend budgeting 20-25 minutes). Let me know if you have any other questions!
