What to expect
Shanghai, a vibrant Chinese city, is perpetually at the crossroads of old and new, torn between development and preservation. This dynamic is apparent in the former French Concession, a hip and historic quarter once home to French consuls and expatriates that still keeps its colonial character. Go deep into the colorful Chinese port city’s history and heritage on this guided walking tour, exploring modern China’s growth through an in-depth visit to the French Concession’s trendy, tree-lined streets. Your guide points you toward hidden gems, such as art deco mansions, classical theaters, and a French-style park that’s now a nightlife hub. Learn about the city’s changes firsthand while roaming the French-built quarter. Discover how it transformed from an Old World foreign enclave to a contemporary hotspot for young Shanghainese. Flexible departure times adapt to your schedule, and your guide can arrange to meet you in your hotel lobby for added convenience.

This was my first trip to China and I was travelling by myself so I was feeling a little anxious. I am so glad I booked this tour. Penny arrived at the hotel on time and was extremely warm and welcoming. Penny's knowledge of Shanghai and its history was fantastic and she had wonderful communications skills. Her English was perfect! Not only did Penny given me a wonderful tour of the French concession she also showed me how to use the subway and gave me many other tips that came in handy when travelling in Shanghai. We had a wonderful lunch together and she even told me where to get the best coffee in Shanghai. I would highly recommend this tour.

I was in Shanghai briefly for work and wanted to make the most of my time. My walking tour with Penny was perfect. She was a wealth of information regarding the beautiful spaces that we walked through in the context of the fascinating recent history of China. I think it is a wonderful way to gain a better understanding and appreciation of the culture of the city. In addition, Penny was excellent company and I really enjoyed my conversations with her. Highly recommend!

I had 36 hours to spend in Shanghai - what to see? This tour set up my visit to this amazing city. I'd do it again. Penny met us (just 2 of us) at our hotel and took us to the old French Club (Okura Garden Hotel) to start. First a view of the French Concession expanse from the top floor with an explanation of the historical background. Then a walk through the charming streets, plane-tree lined avenues, art deco buildings. Penny bought us a tasty Chinese treat from a roadside stall. A stroll through the King Albert Apartments, a visit to the hall at the Jinjiang Hotel (was the Cathay Mansions and Grosvenor House owned by Victor Sassoon) where Nixon signed the Shanghai Communique in 1972 then to the residence of Sun Yat-sen and finally Fuxing Park and the French gardens.
Penny was a font of knowledge and talked really fast trying to give us as much as possible !! Thank you Penny.
Then she took us back to our hotel by taxi (it was dark by then) which was really helpful and kind of her.

The tour usually starts at 2.00pm but because I was only getting in from Beijing at that time they adjust to start at 3.00. Without that flexibility I would have missed it all !!

We booked the afternoon tour from Shanghai Melody. Our guide Penny Pung picked us up in our hotel at 1pm. for the 3 h tour. We went by taxi to the Old French Club, now Okura Garden Hotel for a view from the top floor, where Penny told us the fascinating history between 1850-1930. Then we started walking and Penny,a perfect English tour guide, showed us on the way the charming streets and the Art deco style architecture. We passed Cathay Mansion in Typical Art Deco style and King Albert Apartment, popularly known as Royal Garden, built by the French Catholic Church for expatriates living in Shanghai. We enjoyed a break with coffee, sticky rice and a Chinese delicacy that Penny bought us. Finally we reached Fuxing Park, thinly French style Garden in the country. A very popular place for people singing and dancing on the street. Penny explained us so many interesting things about Shanghai that we forgot the time: it was already 7 pm when Penny cold a taxi to bring us back to our hotel. It was a fantastic experience, fascinating and enjoyable and we had very pleasant conversations together. Thank you very much Penny for your fine company and for the way you made us fall in love with Shanghai, the history and the people.
Worth every moment and not to be missed!

Penny was great. She was knowledgeable and passionate about the area. She could put things in context and was able to adapt the tour to our interests, including our desire for insider history lessons. Penny led us to an excellent coffee stop, which I don’t think is part of her regular tour. The route was so good that I’ve led multiple people on it on my own.

We are so glad we did this tour with Penny. She is very knowledgeable and explained to us so many interesting things about Shanghai history , art and traditions. She met us at our hotel and led us, in a leisurely way, through the streets of Shanghai. Penny is a great guide and we strongly recommend her company’s tours. We will use it again when back in Shanghai!

Penny was one of the most engaging tour guides I’ve met on my travels; detailed, insightful and above all, pleasant.
She brought us at a leisurely place through PuXing Park where we saw locals doing what they do...having fun and socially engaging...dancing, calligraphy, debate...on to Dr Sun Yat-Sen’s house, through the old French Sports Club grounds - now a Japanese hotel chain - side streets and...much, much more...
Would have loved to have had a few more hours.
Penny, you were a treat!!! Recommended without hesitation.

I go to Shanghai every couple of months and this is the second time I have done a tour with Penny. Although I have explored the French Concession myself Penny made it richer by her explanation of the history. We stopped at a cafe to have tea and it really was like a tea version of a cocktail bar. Through Penny I was able to ask all sorts of questions about the tea, as I don't speak Chinese. It was very charming. I look forward to doing more tours with Penny because she is very good at pointing out small things which help to get a feel for the Chinese culture.

Following Penny, we have traced back the golden age of Shanghai back in the 19th century. We wouldn’t have learned that much about the history and the people from that time without this tour. Both my friend and I were impressed by the knowledge from penny and would not hesitate to recommend this tour!
