Chocolate Museum and Tasting Experience, Delicious and Educational
Dec 2020
Friends and I visited the Zotter Museum on Christmas day. It was a lovely experience, but not what I expected. I'll try to clarify a few things so that visitors understand what to expect.

"Factory" - First, despite the title of this entry, the Zotter facility is not a factory. There is no manufacturing or processing of chocolate in China. Chocolate bars are imported from Austria, then packaged and distributed for the Chinese market. The only "factory" is for display or for the chocolate bars that visitors might create and take home. Perhaps some quality control is done, and certainly there is a kitchen. But, it's not a large scale factory, just a small demonstration kitchen.

"Chocolate Theater" - Advertised as a "chocolate theater," I find this term also misleading. Like many tours, the experience begins with a film. Guests are introduced to the Zotter family and their quest to source the best organic ingredients. The film follows the company founder, Josef Zotter to tropical growing regions. It introduces visitors to cacao farmers and explains how fair prices are paid to ensure the well-being of the farming communities. Altogether, it is a lovely film and serves as an introduction to the Zotter brand.

Tasting Experience - The Zotter visit is primarily designed to be a tasting experience. Guests begin by learning about and tasting a cacao bean. That is followed by tastes of liquid chocolate which constitute the base of the bars. Visitors sample the chocolate bars themselves, then drinking chocolates, and finally the additional nuts/seeds/spices/ingredients which comprise the specialty bars. Think walnuts, hazelnuts, ginger, saffron, coconut, almond, chili, etc. There are plenty of visuals and information throughout the tour. So, in that sense the experience is a museum. But, overall it is a guided tasting tour.

There are well over 200 chances to sample chocolates and ingredients, but no one samples everything. Most people choose a few and are not overwhelmed. The samples are tiny, just enough for a taste, so there is no need to worry about consuming too much or feeling unwell.

The facilities are spotlessly clean and the staff very friendly. Our tour was in English. we were a group of 10 so we called ahead and were given a group rate. I heard that it may be cheaper to book online, but we didn't purchase tickets before arriving.

The tour wraps up in the Zotter shop where guests can indulge in their favorite chocolate products. The Zotter brand is expensive, but the price is absolutely worth it. I lived in Europe for over 15 years and have had a lot of exposure to Italian, German, Spanish, Swiss, and Eastern European brands. Honestly, nothing tastes like Zotter. I was astounded at the difference. The Zotter milk chocolate won first place in international competition in 2015. in If you enjoy chocolate, don't miss the Zotter museum. The attraction is well designed and enjoyable, but the real treasure is the chocolate itself. Zotter is truly the finest chocolate I have ever eaten and I encourage you to taste the difference for yourself.

Amazing for kids, tourists and chocolate conosseurs of any age
Aug 2020
Great experience. I was surprised i haven't heard of Zotter earlier, as i live in Shanghai. For the ticket price, you will have PLENTY of different styles, forms, shapes and flavors of chocolate. Including some mixes with alcohol at the end.

Watch a movie about production, try choco beans, and literally, around 60 more different samples. As well as make your own artisanal sample of a chocolate bar.
i was happy that i haven't had breakfast that day )))).

It's a little bit difficult to find the entrance, as you have to walk through the mall

. The factory is also opened for corporate events and training. We will hold one there in December as well.

All ingredients are imported and organic. Quality is good. Souveniers at the end are somewhat pricey, i purchased samples for our team and paid over 450

Zotter is definitely on my list when i have to take people who visiting Shanghai out (together with TeamLab, Disneyland, and Madame Tusseau museum for kids).

For the club in Shanghai, i still reccomend Bar Rouge for the view and Up Shanghai forhiphop dancing and casual atmosphere...and of course best shisha in town.
For luxury experience: 4 seasons Pudong pool, Mister and Missis Bund restorant, Char bar for drinks with a view for adults.
Have fun )

Fun for all ages! And all dietary restrictions!
Aug 2019 • Family
We have brought friends and family ranging in ages from 10-80 four times in the last year and everyone has a good time. It is a fun activity ( especially with teens) to do that gives you a break from the traditional chines tourist stuff. There are many chocolate samples to taste and iff you have people that have gluten, dairy or peanut allergies they can enjoy too because each sample is labeled if it has one of those items that is easy to read.

Not a factory, kind of cheesy, but lots of chocolate to taste.
Apr 2019 • Solo
For starters, this is not actually a factory, it's a "chocolate theater". Apparently that means you watch a video about the company starring the founder, who has a quite cheesy sense of humor, then go on a tour with a guide who talks a bit about chocolate making and then guides you into areas with lots and lots of samples.

This isn't exactly for the true chocolate aficionado, because that's not what Zotter does, they do fun, creative fillings and other chocolate products, and that's what this "theater" shows off. But it's lots of fun and you do get a rather exceptional amount of samples to taste.

Also, be aware the building is at the back of some sort of outlet mall and isn't near a metro stop. Take a taxi or enjoy the perfectly pleasant 20-min walk from the nearest stop. Maybe even go shopping afterward.

Great if you're in Shanghai for a while

The Zotter Chocolate Factory was a lovely stop for one afternoon. There's so much chocolate to eat throughout the tour so pace yourself! Making your own chocolate bars was fun and learning about the chocolate was interesting. It doesn't really have anything at all to do with Shanghai or Chinese culture, so if you're looking for something with some culture, this isn't the trip for you. Sen was a great tour guide. I would have liked to see more of the factory in action though. James was incredible! When we asked about a taxi, he called one for us and arranged for the driver to be waiting at the gate for us with clear descriptions of who we were. It can be difficult getting a taxi in Shanghai, so this was much appreciated!

Unforgettable experience
This is one of our unforgettable experience here in shanghai! We went there with my family & friends, with other groups. first you are going to watch a short movie, about the history of chocolates and zotter company ! Our guide explained it well how to make a chocolate from beans to bar. He let us to try the different roasted beans and chocolate nibs. And the most interesting part of our tour is when our guide explain what are the difference of white and dark chocolate ! We just cared about the sweetness before, but now we start to eat a dark chocolate! Thanks to our very knowledgeable guide sen. As we continue our tour you can also make your own bar of chocolate with lots of toppings you can choose and put on your bar. They are also offer a chocolate with a different spices and flavors, this is not just a simple tour that you’re just taste the chocolate but explained how they make the chocolates ! All in all this is our unforgettable experience, highly recommended, we would like to thank mr. Zotter and his family to make it possible this idea ! And we also want to thank to our guide sen, he is very knowledgeable and friendly he do his job well and makes our tour unforgettable

Best day ever
Sep 2018 • Couples
We absolutely loved this tour because we absolutely love chocolate! It was a very child friendly experience, but my husband and I went alone and enjoyed ever minute of it. We love to go on chocolate tastings and appreciated the quality and variety of the chocolate very much. We were the only two on the english tour for that time and our guide was informative and friendly, but didn't linger and let my husband and I feel like we were having a private, exciting, romantic experience as we walked through the chocolate factory. We loved to learn about the chocolate and taste it at different stages. We would love to go back and visit again. We really loved it so much! The factory is a bit out of the way of everything, but still we highly highly recommend it. On the way back, we took a city bus to the Bund which put us in a more centralized location so it wasn't too inconvenient.

If you like Chocolate - you've gotta take this tour!
Jun 2018 • Family
I've been on several chocolate factory tours - but they are nothing like the Zotter tour in Shanghai. I think tried upward of 50 kinds/combinations of chocolates. Adults and college kids had a ball. A little ways from city center (~30 minutes) but neat upcoming area and very modern facility. Starts with a short informative film and then a guide takes you through various manufacturing stations. Money well spent!
