What to expect
  • Spend a delightful day exploring the natural wonders of Tenorio Volcano National Park. Your tour begins with morning pickup at your La Fortuna hotel, and then a drive that takes you through the scenic hillsides of Arenal Volcano National Park. Stock up on snacking provisions at a local store if you like (own expense) before entering the majestic beauty of Tenorio Volcano National Park.  Embark on a moderately challenging roughly 2-hour hike through the lush rainforest of the park. The terrain is steep and rocky at parts, so feel free to hike at a pace that works for you. Your guide will point out highlights of the landscape, including interesting plants and the many types of wildlife that call this area home. Keep an eye out for blue morpho butterflies, tropical birds, tapirs, ocelots, sloths and spider monkeys.  When you arrive at the Rio Celeste waterfall, you’ll immediately see how this cascade got its name, which means ‘sky-blue river.’ Admire the crashing waters that empty into a lagoon, which takes on a brilliant blue hue courtesy of natural mineral deposits in the river. Relax along this picturesque scene as your guide shares local myths about how the river got its eye-catching color. Continue on your hike to the Los Teñideros, which features the convergence of two rivers in the jungle. Behold the clear waters turning bright blue when they merge as if by magic — a natural spectacle caused by a chemical reaction of volcanic minerals in the water.  At the end of your hike, rest and refuel with delicious regional cuisine at a local restaurant before the return drive to your La Fortuna hotel.

Good hike even in the rain
Our guide Carlos couldn’t help the fact that it poured raining for most of our hike. He but did make it as fun as possible and gave us a lot of insight on the area. Lunch was filling and enjoyable

A really fun attraction
Really enjoyed this hike to the falls. Our tour guide, Carlos, was fun and knowledgeable. He not only taught us about what we saw on the hike, but also during the ride (explaining Costa Rica’s mountain ranges, weather, situation on the continental divide and many other things. There is a chance, due to rain, that the water won’t be blue. It was when we went, but I wouldn’t have been disappointed if it wasn’t because of the hike and Carlos’ expertise.

Moderate hike beautiful view
Apr 2021
This was a moderately difficult hike with a very friendly, very prompt tour guide. Jason showed up right at the time appointed and surprisingly due to covid we were lucky enough to have a private tour. Jason was easy to talk to and informative about the tour itself and the area in general with any specific questions we had. The hike itself did have some moderately difficult parts including several parts with steps (one with 250 of so) so be ware if you have physical limitations. Although it had been raining and it was cloudy so the water was not as blue as in some of the photos it was still beautiful and the part where you could see the change of the water was especially cool. My only complaint was that Jason did not seem to be looking out much for animals as we were moving at a pretty brisk pace and we did see other tours taking more time to stop and point things out and talk about the park but perhaps he was keeping an eye out more than I knew and we were just unlucky. Overall it was a tour I would recommend.

Our tour guide and bus driver were so attentive and informative. I’m still not sure how he did it, but our guide, Carlos, saw a sloth sitting in a tree from our moving van! I knew right then and there we were in for a treat.
The hike was exactly as I had imagined and was well prepared for the amount of steps and stairs I would have to complete. The views are worth every step! The lunch afterwards was delicious.
Thank you for such a fun time.

Beautiful Water - Fun Hike
Jan 2019 • Couples
We did the Rio Celeste through Desafio Adventure Co while staying in La Fortuna, and it was a great experience. The shuttle ride to Rio Celeste is a fun way to see some smaller Costa Rica communities and countryside. Our guide and driver were professional and fun, and spoke excellent English. The hike itself goes through some beautiful rain forest, sometimes muddy, sometimes a little steep, but not too difficult. The waterfall and the river are stunning - I’ve never seen that color blue in fresh water before. On the way home, we stopped at an excellent roadside restaurant for lunch, with delicious local food. Highly recommend this activity!

Beautiful hike made so much better with a guide!
Sep 2018 • Couples
We went on this hike during the rainy season, and once I realized the river would probably not be blue on our day, I kind of regretted booking it. HOWEVER, it ended up being one of our best experiences! Our guide, Walter, was amazing. So incredibly knowledgeable about the environment and the region's history, and life in Costa Rica. It was so much more interesting and educational than I expected, and it added so much depth to our experience. We feel so lucky to have spent a day with Walter! Pura Vida Mae!

Challenging but rewarding hike and views!
Feb 2018 • Couples
This tour included round trip transportation, entrance fee to park, guide, and lunch. Desafio picked us up at our hotel just before 8am. It was about an hour and twenty minute drive to Tenorio National Park. #1 tip: RENT THE BOOTS!!! If you do not have heavy duty hiking boots and want to save yourself a ton of trouble, pay the $4 and rent the waterproof wellies! Best decision of the day. Hiking through the rain forest, you better believe it's going to rain and boy were we glad we had those boots. It gets super muddy - totally manageable, but with boots, there are no worries, just keep plowing through. The total hike was about 4 hours in total. Round trip it was challenging, but the views of the river and waterfall were just exquisite! It was super cloudy, so when we reached the top of the hike, we weren't able to see the 3 volcano peaks, however it was still beautiful to watch the movement of the cloud forest mist. Our guide explained the water color and sediment at the bottom where the two rivers converge - it was very interesting. After the hike, we stopped at the cafe to re-fuel. The food was good and hit the spot after a long day of work. Our hotel (El Silencio del Campo) connected us with Desafio, but we did 3 tours with this company and all 3 were smooth with no complications.
