What to expect
  • Meet a guide at your hotel for a 7:30am departure, then begin the one-hour trip to Rincon de La Vieja, a cinder cone volcano at the heart of the Guanacaste mountain range (pickup is at selected hotels only, see Booking Details for more information). Upon arrival at Vandará Hot Springs & Adventures, you’ll be greeted with a fresh fruit cocktail, then saddle up for a 25-minute horseback ride. Follow a guide along forest trails with views of the volcanos, riding towards the starting point of a 10-line zipline course. Take on a series of ziplines of varied lengths and speeds, and when you reach the end of the course, refuel with a snack of tortillas and coffee. The next stop is a 1,312-foot (400-meter) slide into a pool of water, then you’ll dry off for an organic lunch, choosing from fish, beef, pork, or vegetarian options. The afternoon is all about relaxation, in the onsite hot pools and mud baths. You can enjoy the mineral-rich volcanic mud, or soak in the 116 F. (47 C.) hot pools, which are heated by underground volcanic activity. Following your time at the hot springs, begin the return trip to the original departure point, where this tour concludes.

A day out of the resort
Keep in mind that a 5 star in Costa Rica might not be the same in another country. The Package is nice. The horses drive themselves and there is literally nothing to do. The “culture” discovery is a dark roast coffee tasting camping style (and it tastes like it), an ox grinding a sugar cane, and a pottery making sit down where you watch a dude make a pot. In contrast, the water slide is long and fast and the 7 zip lines are cool. Zip #4 is the longest. Fun little entertainment to get out of your overpriced resort. Roughly Back to your place by 4pm.

Tour with Elvis - He was the King
Mar 2020
Took this tour on March 6, 2020 with our tour guide named Elvis. He was really knowledgeable and personable. His brain was like a walking Costa Rican enclopedia. He took me from a zero to a hero in Costa Rican knowledge in one day. Tour was great fun. Got to do Ziplining thorough the rainforest, horseback riding, mud baths, natural hot springs, water slide, wildlife watching including monkeys, and sovenier shopping at the cheapest place in the area. I think this tour is not appropriate for younger children since they will not be able to safely do many of the activities. The tour was from 7:45am to 4:30pm with pickup and drop off at the hotel. We were a small group of 4 and paid $135US each. I saw another tour company with a group of 20 people which I was glad I did not pick. If you have an action camera such as a GoPro I highly recommend you bring it because you will be getting great action shots on the Zipline & waterslide (much more intense than it looks). I brought a drone for aerial shots but there was too much heavy tree cover to get an adequate take off site. Lunch is included but alcohol is extra. All round, I highly recommend this trip and request Elvis if you can as I would give him an A+ in the guiding department. He saved me about $100US in sovenier costs alone.

Honeymooners
Jul 2019 • Couples
Our tour guide, Herman, and driver, Luis, picked us up from Secrets Papagayo. We were the only ones on the tour which turned out to be fantastic. Both guides were very knowledgable and friendly. Herman knew almost everyone who worked at the attraction we visited and everyone joked with him. We got to do a few extra things not listed in the description like taste some Cacique moonshine and eat some traditional pastries made onsite. We got to move at our own pace and that made us very happy because we didn't have to wait on a large group to catch up to us. Herman offered to stop along the way home at a nice gift shop but we were so exhausted that we passed. I would've paid to have him take us all around the area. We felt very safe the whole time and as someone who has done many excursions in Central America/the Carribean before I would say this one was on parr with the best of them when it comes to value for your money. This was our only excursion on our 5 day trip to Guanacaste and it did not disappoint!

Tour and tour guide were amazing! Full review and tips below.
We booked this excursion but it was called the Buena Vista Combo tour through our hotel, Occidental Papagayo. They picked us up at 7:30 am. There were only three of us (40-ish yr old women) and another couple in the van. The driver, Renee, was a hoot! Our tour guide, Kevin, was also in the van telling us the most amazing things about the country. This man knew everything, from the providences, geography, climate, education system, government, wildlife, you name it! And he spoke 100% perfect English. Kevin is AWESOME! It was about an hour long ride and half an hour of that was on a really rocky road. When we got there we put our stuff in the free locker and suited up for zip lining right away. There were about 10 lines to zip down and the views were beautiful. Kevin went first each time and used our camera to take pictures, video, and group photos along the way. So nice of him. Next, we got our bags out of the lockers and changed into our bathing suits, put a tube around our waist, and hiked up a little ways to go on the water slide. I admit the water was freezing cold when you first get in the slide but it was such a fun adventure. Next, we changed back into our clothes and had a nice Costa Rican lunch. The rice pudding was so good! Next we walked over to the horse area, put our backpacks onto a tractor (which would later meet up with us), each hopped on a horse, and rode for 45 minutes through a path of mud. It went very smoothly. It was just the three of us, Kevin, and Fernando the horse wrangler. We ended up at the hot spring area where we met up with our bags, changed back into our bathing suit and put our bags into lockers. Then we went into a sauna 5 mins. Next we lathered up in mud and let it dry. Then we washed it off in an outdoor shower with pretty cold water (and our tour guide Kevin somehow found a hose and hosed us down when we weren't looking! That jokester!) and then we hopped in a series of hot spring pools. Last, we changed back into our clothes and hopped on a tractor back down to the beginning.

Tips:
-Bring a lightweight backpack that can get muddy or be set on the ground.
-I brought a pair of water shoes and was glad I did for when I had to walk up to the waterslide beginning and to go into the hot spring pools. Otherwise you're walking around on packed mud or cement.
-if I could do it again I would have worn a one-piece bathing suit and brought board shorts for the slide. They do give you a little leather thing to put over your bathing suit bottom so you don't get a wedgie. But it was kind of awkward just walking around in my bathing suit.
-Bring a trash bag or big Ziploc bag to put your wet bathing suit into.
-Our instructions said to bring a towel but that was not necessary because they handed out towels at the water slide and also at the hot spring area.
-Bring a credit card or money if you want drinks in the hot springs. We didn't know they offered that. A beer would have been very refreshing in there. Also bring a few ones if you would like to tip along the way as there are tip jars pretty much at everything. They deserve it!
-Another couple told us that when they were on the horse, it was raining and they were given ponchos.
-We went in November and the weather was perfect, about 78 degrees Fahrenheit but I still advise to wear leggings (or other pants) because it helps prevent bugs bites.
-Wear bug spray and mosquito bracelets if you have them.
-Bring a waterproof camera instead of having to deal with those plastic waterproof pouches you put your phone in. So much easier to use the camera especially if your tour guide is going to take photos for you.
-Our instructions said to bring a change of clothes and that is probably because after ziplining and horseback your clothes will have lots grease spots from the zipline pulley and mud spots from the horseback ride.
-Bring some sort of small pouch to wear around your neck so that you can put your important things (money, phone) in there so you won't have to worry about any important stuff in your bag on the tractor.
-Request Kevin!

Enjoy!

Jeff was the best!!
We went on the Borinquen combo trip with Jeff. He picked us up from the Riu right on time and we were lucky enough to be the only ones in the car. The drive was very smooth and Jeff would make occasional stops along the way to point out different types of trees (and the fruits that grew on them), show us some look outs, and let us take pictures of the beautiful scenery.

When we got to Borinquen, Jeff was there every step of the way. He met us at the Zipline area after our horseback ride to provide water and then ate with us after we completed all the lines. We then went to the mud bath and hot springs where he educated us on everything we needed to know and showed us some heiroglyphics. It started to rain and then a thunderstorm arrived, and Jeff met us with umbrellas before we headed back to the hotel.

Although the adventures themselves were very fun (and I would recommend), it honestly was Jeff that made the trip. He is so knowledgeable, friendly, funny and accommodating. When the trip was over, we parted as friends. Would definitely recommend this company/adventure and request Jeff if you can!

Highlight of our trip! Estif and Dixon are the best!
Mar 2018 • Friends
This was the best thing we did all week! Estif Arias was extremely helpful in finding the perfect excursion for us and even met us the morning of our trip to make sure we had everything and got on the correct bus. If it wasn't for Estif, we would have never have found our favorite thing we did all week with such an amazing tour group! I only wish we found this tour company at the beginning of our trip!

The day was full of activities. We drove up to Buena Vista and immediately got to zip line or walk the hanging bridges through the trees. Then we briefly saw a local potter and outdoor bakery that gave us delicious samples. We got to go down a really fast outdoor water slide a couple of times, and then it was time for lunch. The restaurant had some of the most flavorful pulled beef with a variety of other options for a full lunch.

In the afternoon, we rode horses down to the hot springs (with the option to take a ride down instead if you don't want to do the horses). At the hot springs, there is a sauna, mud room, and six different hot spring pools at different temperatures. It is the most relaxing way to end the day, and your skin feels so smooth after it all.

Another wonderful thing about this company was that it was a small group. We only had seven people total! Sometimes it's even less apparently. Our driver, Dixon, spent the entire day with just our group. He was phenomenal! Dixon took photos for us, made sure we got to do everything we wanted, and was absolutely hilarious! He was also extremely nice and very knowledgeable of the different animals and trees in the area. Dixon definitely was a major reason the trip was incredible!

Borinquen Adventure
Feb 2018 • Couples
We thoroughly enjoyed this adventure tour. Even our bus driver, Juan Castañeda, added to our enjoyment with his thorough knowledge of the country/area. We were able to speak English and he did a fine job of communicating with us! The horseback ride was just long enough for me to get a minor saddle sore but well worth it! The zip line was my favorite part! So exciting and really nice views, including a waterfall. Our zip guides were fun too! After the zip line, we had a wonderful lunch, very tasty! We chose to skip the mud baths as we had done this before and we didn't want to get our bathing suits dirty, so we went right to the hot springs. Boy, were they hot! The attendant cooled one down so that we could get into it and we enjoyed our time there, very relaxing. One caveat, PLEASE use bug spray on all exposed skin! We had some with us, but never put it on. What a mistake! We did not feel the bugs biting, or even see them, and now we are still scratching the many bites over a week later.

Vacation
We did an excursion which includes a short horse back ride that was not too challenging, a very fast water slide that was a bit rough, a delicious lunch, and 10 zip lines that were very safe, as well as the Mud bath and hot volcanic mineral spring. Excellent choice for a day trip from montapalo bay area. rodrick our guide was very knowledgeable, helpful and informative. everyone spoke very good English, and we saw a lot of wildlife there at the plantation. A sloth with her baby only a few feet from us, monkeys, and scarlet macaws as well as a lot of beautiful butterflies. helpful to bring extra money for buying fresh coffee beans or drinks at the swim up bar in the hot springs as well as to tip these wonderful people. lunch was excellent and the service all day was great. also, good to know, don't wear jewelry in the mineral water, it tarnished my silver rings. We left at 7:30am and got back about 4:30pm just in time to relax a little and get ready for dinner.

Excellent tour company & guides!
Nov 2017 • Friends
After a minor mix up with shuttles in the morning (completely my own fault, not theirs) We were able to get our driver to rescue us on the side of the highway. The driver & guides were very friendly & helpful. Lots of interesting information about the area, complimentary water & wifi on the shuttle.

This company has been one of the easiest & most accommodating tour companies I've worked with in Costa Rica, would highly recommend them & will definitely be booking through them in the future :)
