    What to Expect
Meet your guide at your hotel in La Fortuna for an early departure (confirm time with tour provider). Depart the city for the drive through the plains of San Carlos, on the outskirts of the Juan Castro Blanco National Park, until you reach your trailhead at a volcanic caldera for a roughly 4-mile (6.5-kilometer) hike, taken over the course of the morning.

Hike through pastures bordering the forest on your way down to the Hule Lagoon and the smaller Congo Lagoon nearby, and then continue on a second trail bordering the volcanic caldera. Descend through the rain forest and catch clear views of the surrounding landscape. At the end of your hike, enjoy homemade lunch in a local family’s home with a panoramic view of your surroundings.

On the way back to La Fortuna, stop to view the waterfalls of the Toro Hydroelectric Project, which reach 590 feet (180 meters).

We had booked through a tour company and told them our priorities for the week which involved activity, volcanoes, hiking and animals. We were staying in Arenal and this was on our itinerary and we really didn’t know what to expect. We got picked up at 7:15 in the morning and

This hike is intense. Our tour guide was Andy and he was fantastic! It took us about 3.5 hours to complete but it was well worth it. The views are stunning and we even got to swim in the lagoon. After the hike, we went to a local house and had lunch with a Costa Rican

This was stunning nearly 7 mile hike up to rim of volcanic crater to view 3 lagoons in the middle. Then an arduous hike down through rainforest into the crater to view lagoons up close. Then up out of crater to a scrumptious lunch prepared at the house of a local family. We are
