About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Kazmir C0 contributionsAmazing Chocolate and Coffee tourI went with my partner and a friend, we had an amazing time. Ros was an amazing guide, very personable, fun, and informational. I have a whole new appreciation for chocolate and coffee!Written 17 March 2024
- dput0 contributionsI’d probably skip it if I were to do it all over againI would say the tour was ok. I’m used to visiting properties like this where there is actual production on the grounds (think if a distillery or a brewery). Nothing is actually made on these grounds. The tour is informative but I wish they had actual production here. The staff is friendly and nice but for the most part it felt like high school age kids that were presenting well rehearsed speeches on coffee, rum, and chocolate. I’d probably skip this if I were to plan our trip again. Pro tip: they do offer hotel shuttle service which is super nice if you don’t have a carWritten 16 March 2024
- kaitliny3740 contributionsAwesome for any familyAmazing tour with Alberto José! Very informative and educational for all age groups. Thank you!! You’re doing an awesome job!Written 16 March 2024
- 77joannk0 contributionsCoffee and Chocolate nirvanaAlberto was amazing and so informative. He was attentive to all participants and receptive to all questions. The tour was fun and educational at the same time. There was no hard sell on purchasing from their gift shop which I found to be very positive at the end of a special experience. Definitely worth the mo ey and such an informative experience.Written 15 March 2024
- Jet6752920 contributionsFun & Informative TourWe enjoyed our experience with tour guide David. We got to try different chocolates, coffees and sugar cane drinks. The tour is not only informative but also interactive. David was very knowledgeable and fun. We would definitely recommend this!Written 14 March 2024
- hmsunkissed0 contributionsIf you love coffee and/or chocolate, this is a MUST!The coffee and chocolate tour with guide David was not on delicious, but very informative. We learned a lot about the process of both coffee and chocolate making and were able to taste different types of each. David even had several people from the tour participate in the process which was fun. He also stopped his whole presentation to point out some howler monkeys that were in the tree right next to where we were sitting! He was an all-around spectacular guide! We really enjoyed this tour and would recommend this to any coffee or chocolate lovers! Don't forget to stop in their gift shop to purchase some of the treats after the tour!Written 14 March 2024
- rhinit0 contributionsThe most informative and delicious experienceWow! At first we were a little nervous at starting out in a big group of tourists (15 of us), but it didn't have any effect on how much we enjoyed this. Communication ahead of the activity was so quick and helpful, and of course very friendly. During the tour, our guide Ros was so nice and told us so many cool facts, he was so well-informed, funny, and helpful. We learned so much more than we expected about coffee and chocolate! And the coffee and chocolate that we did taste was absolutely incredible. I couldn't recommend this more.Written 14 March 2024
- Navigator308123001550 contributionsYou won’t be disappointed chocolate and coffee tourWow a fabulous tour with David. He was very knowledgeable about all aspects of coffee production and gave us tips on making perfect cups at home. Also explained the history and present day production of chocolate and we had a demonstration of extracting sugar syrup from sugar cane. There were numerous samples of chocolate, coffee and syrup throughout the 2 plus hour tour. It was a well paced that and preteens also enjoyed it. Expect mostly shaded walking on groomed paths with numerous opportunities to sit.Written 10 March 2024

- mahinc20240 contributionsThe vibes were above and beyondThis chocolate and coffee tour was amazing!! Alberto made it such a great experience. He was super passionate and knowledgeable about coffee and chocolate, and he made every moment super fun and hospitable. The tour was through the North Fields plantations, and the greenery is a must-see. Combined with Alberto's guiding, it brought back the nostalgia of the school field trips that I used to have as a kid. Throughout the tour, you get to taste raw cacao, roasted cacao, cacao butter, melted chocolate, chocolate tea, different strengths of chocolate, and different types of coffee!! Overall, I would highly recommend this!Written 7 March 2024
- W3750XKhelens0 contributionsAuthentic, informative, interactive, fun!We learned a ton on this tour and enjoyed all of it very much. Our guide David was engaging and knowledgeable and shared some thought-provoking history of the coffee operation and his personal experience. This was at the beginning of a week-long trip around Costa Rica and in hindsight I think the gift shop at Northfields was maybe the best we experienced anywhere: more truly local items and fairly priced.Written 4 March 2024
- 592davidv0 contributionsHighly recommend to everyone!Enjoyed an amazing tour with Alberto. Learned so much about growing, harvesting, processing and tasting of coffee and cocoa. Was the perfect combo of education, tasting and walking.Written 4 March 2024

Absolutely brilliant tour! We’d had a rather gimmicky ‘coffee, cocoa and sugarcane show’ at the end of another tour the day before which took 5mins and gave us some burnt cocoa beans and awful cane water and coffee, so we weren’t sure what to expect. Rest assured, this one is a world apart! 2 1/2 hours going through a beautiful plantation, we learned so much about each product from our fantastic guide Rosbi, and the samples were delicious. Even my son, who hates dark chocolate and all bitter things sat there trying all the wonderful chocolate products and enjoyed them. At the end both kids tried medium and dark roast coffee (black) and sipped away to an empty cup! They had only tried very sugary lattes before, so it says a lot about the quality of coffee that they could drink them straight! (Led to a hilarious night of overly excited kids). This may not have been the most adrenaline filled tour, but it was definitely a highlight of our stay in Arenal. Oh, and middle of August, 3pm tour and we had stunning weather!

Miner was very knowledgeable and eager to make our visit enjoyable. He shared history and details about the local community and personal stories. The coffee and chocolate processes were described and demonstrated with tasting to reinforce the learning. Some of us needed extra reinforcement. We highly recommend the tour.

I initially had not planned on taking a coffee and chocolate tour but it was recommended by another tour guide and I am so glad I did! This was such an amazing experience and I loved my personal tour by David. He was extremely knowledgable even though I knew very little about the coffee and chocolate production process. We even saw some great animals such as the blue jeans frog and tanagers and their nest. Additionally, I had such a great time sampling the cacao fruit! I have such a greater appreciation for the coffee process and made sure to purchase some beans and cacao tea for my home. Money well spent!! Make sure you book this tour if you're ever in the area!

David was a fantastic guide! He gave a fun and informative tour of the plantation and was really engaging with everyone. We learned so much about the whole coffee and chocolate prep process. The tastings were honestly the highlight of my day - the coffee and chocolate were all so smooth and fresh. Highly recommend anyone to take this tour and hopefully you get David as your guide!

We enjoyed a very great and informative tour with David as guide. He did a great job and you could feel his passion about what he is doing there. Very good experience, totally recommend it - worth the price! We learned more about coffee and coffee culture in Costa Rica, as well chocolate / cacao and sugar cane. It was very nice to try the cacao in different stages and flavour it by ourselves. We also learned a lot about the coffee manufactoring process and I learned many new things - I'm sure I'm able to do better coffee now back home! 😂😉
We also learned about other plants and some animals at this beautiful mixed garden / farm

This place was wonderful and our tour guide, David, was phenomenal!!!! While you will not get to tour an actual coffee plantation (La Fortuna/Arenal is too rainy to produce good coffee beans), the experience of learning about coffee and touring their grounds was great! David went out of his way to make this an incredible experience and even pointed out wildlife on the plantation. The coffee tasting was great and the chocolate tasting was absolutely delicious! We ended the tour with a shot of sugarcane "moonshine" and this ended up being our favorite tour of our entire trip! What a great experience. This tour is family owned and operated, which makes the experience even more special. Thanks again, David!!! You were awesome!

This was truly an amazing experience and worth every penny. If you get lucky you will have Rosbi as your tour guide. He was very funny and answered any questions we had about coffee and cacao (chocolate). The tour gives details about the history and process of making coffee grounds and chocolate as well as taste testing products from their own fields! The end of the tour included taste testing sugar cane and some of the people of the tour got to grind it.

This was a great tour for teens. David was our guide and we learned so many interesting things about the history of coffee and cacao production in Costa Rica. From seeing the growing and cultivating processes, tasting fresh samplings from the field and watching the conversion to chocolate and roasted coffee, this was very enjoyable. The teens also assisted with squeezing sugar water from the fresh cane and we enjoyed sampling that, as well. If you have teens, do the 8am tour then head a short distance away to park along the road at the rope swing for a couple hours of fun at the river before it gets too busy. Be sure to ask for David at North Fields. He was an excellent guide.

2 hour and 30 min tour. First a walk through the garden seeing various plants such as coffee tree, cocoa, bananas, pineapple, mango, and more, as well as animals, humming birds, parrots, poisonous frogs, Costa Rica national bird, etc. It is not a coffee nor cocoa plantation, just plant for demonstration. The processing of coffee and cocoa are well explained. Hereafter there was a long tasting tour of cocoa at various steps of the process, various traditional cocoa drinks, chocolate, sugarcane, and coffee. The guide David was entertaining, speaks clear good English, and seems to love his job. A great tour even for our kids of 9, 11, and 13 who only speak basic English.

Excellent tour run by some really great people. The info they provided and willingness to answer all of our crazy questions was top notch. David and Gerardo were both super nice, and gave us great tips on where to eat in La Fortuna. If you’re in the area, definitely check them out. It was one of the highlights of our trip.

Good afternoon. I am here in Costa Rica this week. I would be interested in doing this English speaking tour. I am staying at a Vbro, address: Bello Horizonte de Escazu, 150 mts Este del Hotel Monte Campana, Casa amarilla esquinera in San Jose. What would be the cost to pick me up if possible? Thank you.

Perhaps its a bit too early for them to reserve so far in advance (especially given the global uncertainty of our times!), but I don't see why you shouldn't be able to take the tour then
I would try to reach them out directly via their site; google up for "northfieldscafe"

We have a reservation for 5/29 at 2pm. Will you pick us up at the Arenal Kioro Suites and Spa or do we need to drive to your location. If so what time will you pick us up?
Thanks,

Is it cheaper to buy the tour directly from the place, or through here?
