What to expect
Departing from the beach in Playas del Coco at 1:30 pm you will enjoy a four and one half hour (4 1/2) hour sail along Costa Rica's spectacular coastline on one of the purpose built catamarans found within the Marlin del Rey fleet.  All are open and spacious allowingr passengers to comfortably enjoy the blue water views of the Costa Rican coastline with its pristine beaches and verdant jungles. Upon departing Playas del Coco we leisurely sail along the Gold Coast will searching for some of the vast, abundant and varied sea life found along our shores.  Some of the sea life we hope to encounter includes whales, dolphins, turtles, flying fish, rays and a wide variety of sea birds.  If conditions permit we will also throw a few fishing lines off the back in the hopes of hooking into one of the many game fish that ply our waters. Eventually we pull into one of the many secluded bays in the area, throw anchor and allow our passengers the opportunity to swim in the warm Costa Rican waters.  Life vests, pool noodles, snorkel equipment and stand up paddle boards are available should weather conditions permit.  For those passengers not wanting to get wet the catamaran is a great place to relax in the shade of the huge main salon or lounge in the sun on one of the many open deck areas. Following our time playing in the water, a light lunch is served.  Lunch is served at approximately 4:30 pm and includes the following: • BBQ Chicken, • Yellow rice, • Black beans, • Fresh Fruit Plates, • Chips (Doritos, Lay’s,Cheetos and Tostitos),  • Fresh made Pico de Gallo and • Homemade chocolate chip cookies using our Grandmas favorite recipe. Our tour also includes a premium open bar.  The offerings from our bar include the following beverages, all the mixes one can possibly imagine and a blender to make that extra special tropical drink or an all natural tropical fruit smoothie: • Soft Drinks:  Pepsi, Pepsi Light, Ginger Ale, 7 Up, Toronja (Fresca), Tonic Water, Soda Water and Bottle Water • Juices:Orange juice, mixed fruit juice , cranberry juice, apple juice and tomato juice. • Beer:Imperial, Miller and Coors Light. • Liquor:Flor de Caña Rum, Absolut Vodka, Jack Daniels Whiskey, Tanqueray Gin, Jose Cuervo Tequila and Cacique Guaro. • Wine:Frontera Cabernet Sauvignon and Frontera Sauvignon Blanc. After lunch we pull anchor, raise the sails and casually motor sail across the bay and back towards Playas del Coco.  We arrive at port as the sun nears the horizon and the sky explodes into a multitude of colors.  Passengers disembark on the sands of Playas del Coco  just after the sun has sunk beyond the horizon.

Great day trip from Coco!
Highly recommend! Super nice catamaran; spotless. The area we went snorkeling was very good and the beach was very secluded and pristine. Lunch and drinks were good too! The crew is very friendly and accommodating. I befriended Jonathan and wanted to keep in touch but lost his WhatsApp :( If you see him, tell him to WhatsApp Pamela, lol! By the way I felt entirely safe the whole time being in the midst of a pandemic.

One of the most enjoyable things to do in Playas de Coco. The crew are amazing! And the snorkeling was a lot of fun.

We picked the day we went specifically because it was windy and we wanted to go for a sail. The fact that in addition to sailing & snorkeling they advertise fishing from the boat, paddle boards, going to a secluded beach, plus an open bar and nice food was what got us to book with this operator. But once we pulled anchor there was no signs of sails going up even though we had perfect conditions so I asked a crew member and he said the captain never puts up sails going out, just coming back. Why? He shrugged his shoulders and just said “that’s the way the captain does it”. So we motored over to a beach with a half dozen other boats already anchored there (so much for secluded) and jumped in to go snorkeling with no instructions as to were to go or what to look for. We headed over to the area that looked most likely to have coral and found a 95%dead reef. So disappointing. We returned to the boat after awhile and were served a very nice ‘lunch’, and after a bit headed back to coco were we started from. After a few extremely watered down drinks we switched to beer and wine and kept waiting for the captain to turn off the engines and sail. Eventually the wind picked up and they did turn off the engines for about 10 minutes but it was such a shame to have wasted all that beautiful air earlier in the day. On another note, they did put out a fishing line but didn’t bother to go through a school of working tuna not too far from the boat. Again another missed opportunity. You would think with Covid and the limited number of guests they have these days that they would be offering the best experience ever, not the run of the mill trip they gave us.

Lovely day at sea!
Feb 2020
I have been on the Marlin del Rey many times and always had a fantastic time. This trip was even more amazing. It was all about the crew. There was a gentleman that was going on the trip from Coco beach and he had MS. The crew helped him on the small boat which was bouncing like crazy with the waves. Then when we arrived at the catamaran a crew-mate lifted him on his back and carried him onto the boat. WOW! It was a super windy day and we still had an amazing time. Saw dolphins on the way back to Coco :) So I applaud the efforts made by the crew to make sure everyone had a good time. I would highly recommend them!

Marlin Del Rey Sailing Tours, Catamaran Sunset Tour, Playas del Coco
Mar 2020
Took this tour on March 7, 2020 out of Playas del Coco. The Catamaran was large and there were about 50 people mostly a mix of Americans and Canadians. The Captain was Rudy. William was serving the drinks. Andres, Neifun and Johan were the crew. The Captain and crew were very friendly and service orientated. I give the crew top marks. I was there primarily for the snorkeling. The pick up from my hotel was at 12:45pm with return to hotel at 7:30pm. Total time snorkeling was 60 minutes which is pretty standard. I saw jumping rays, dophins right beside the boat, morey eel, angel fish, morish idols, and blue damsil fish. It is illegal to feed fish and wildlife in Costa Rica. It is best to ask the staff where the best area to see the fish is. They act as lifeguards and are out on the water with you. The coral was average. The best coral I have seen in the world is Hawaii and Dominica. On the beach there is a cave structure you can go into with water rushing in from the other side. This is a must see and makes for a great video. Pina Coladas were great with lots of fresh Pinapple. Great lunch. Nice Sunset. All round great trip with lots of variety. I would highly recommend it.

Marlin del Rey, Catamaran Sunset tour, Playas del Coco.
Feb 2020
This tour was very nice, love the catamaran tours. Marlin del Rey did well. They picked us up at the resort at 12:45. A boat picks you up on coco beach to take you out to the catamaran. I have mobility issues, and with some good help made it on. It was a catamaran with 70 people. I find that a bit much, would prefer with a lot less people. There was no room on the outside to sit as too many people or in the inside, not much room either. Drinks were awesome, bar tender makes a mean fresh pina colada, service was good. Went to a bay with a beach. The snorkelling was OK, nothing great. Saw black urchins and some black fish, a few yellow and 1 blue fish. The coral is pretty much dead there. Some who did not want to snorkel went to the beach or stayed on the boat. They supplied the snorkelling equipment. We brought our own mask and snorkel. Around 4:30 they brought out dinner. (Chicken, rice, salad, beans, various chips, cookies, fruits) was quite good. Someone had heat stroke on the catamaran, the staff were on it right away and knew exactly what to do, took care of the person brought him inside in the shade when he was better, gave ice and water and kept a watch on him. Once ready to be on the move, we then sailed around this bay and saw some small fins and some smaller rays jumping up. Boat put up the sails and slowed down to give a chance to the sun to come down and take a lot of pictures. Made it back to coco beach just as dark was setting in. Took the motor boat to the beach.
