About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- W8831IGdong0 contributionsATV day of sun & fun!Our guide Danny was not only pleasant but knowledgeable as well. A fun guy to spend our morning with. The ATV ride was exhilarating.Written 3 February 2025
- Rysiu M0 contributionsAXR Jaco 3-Hour ATV Tour: A Mixed ExperienceOur recent 3-hour ATV tour with AXR Jaco was a memorable experience, with breathtaking views and exciting adventures, but it was overshadowed by some uncomfortable moments regarding tipping. Here’s a breakdown of our experience: The Positives - **Well-Maintained ATVs:** The ATVs appeared new and in excellent condition. It was evident that the staff prioritize their upkeep, which added to our confidence during the tour. - **Unique Private Experience:** We lucked out as the only group with our guide, Mikey, allowing for a more personal tour. - Scenic Stops: - The drive through Jaco to the farm and into the mountains was beautiful. Along the way, we spotted wildlife like a coyote, a snake, and turkey vultures. - The stop at the border of Puntarenas and San José Provinces provided stunning views of mountain peaks, perfect for photos. - Jaco Falls was a highlight, with an opportunity to swim and explore behind the waterfall—a truly refreshing and cinematic experience. - Rancho Shadday offered serene views of the mountains, and the plantain platter and a cold beer made for a relaxing break. - **Safety Measures:** The safety briefing was thorough, and clear instructions were provided for operating the ATVs. The Drawbacks - Excessive Focus on Tips: - The first mention of tipping during the safety briefing raised some red flags, as it felt premature to bring it up before the tour even began. - While we understand and empathize with the financial realities of local workers, the repeated emphasis on tipping—both during and after the tour—felt excessive and unprofessional. - The guide’s direct request for a higher tip after we gave the $10 we had budgeted for was uncomfortable. - **Mixed Professionalism:** - Our guide, shared personal details about his life and financial situation, which felt unnecessary and pressured us to contribute more. - Having a beer at the Shadday Ranch during the tour raised some concerns about the hardship of a financial situation in Costa Rica, with you only make $3/hour. Final Thoughts The tour itself was fantastic. The route, views, and overall experience provided a unique perspective on Costa Rica's beauty. However, the constant focus on tipping and the unprofessional behavior of the guide detracted from the overall experience. Recommendation I would recommend this tour for its scenic value and adventure. However, I would advise AXR Jaco to provide additional training for their guides to maintain professionalism and address the feedback about tipping etiquette. **Rating: 3/5 Stars**Written 20 January 2025
- Connector7892020 contributionsGreat trip bad customer serviceWe have used AXR for many years on our trip to CR. Keni and Gabriel are excellent guides they have always tried to show us different things on each trip. We prefer the buggy's feel like they are much safer. This past Feb.we had them booked and had to cancel part of our crew were not able to make the trip. Their cancellation policy is horrible and for that I will not use them again tho those two guides are super. Too bad they don't value a good relationship with past customers. I will use Piko travel from now on. They are very honest and trustworthy.Written 13 January 2025
- nataliesF609GA0 contributionsDo not hesitate!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️We had a great experience with AXR Jaco! We were able to book on short notice in the week between Christmas and New Years, which was a surprise. Our group of four (two adults and two teenagers) rented two ATVs for a two hour tour with a guide. Our guide Alberto took us up into the mountains and we were able to stop at a few different places to take photos and switch drivers. It was the perfect combo of thrill seeking and still feeling safe. Splashing through mud puddles and crossing a river were some of the highlights! 10/10 recommend.Written 1 January 2025
- Dejuan E0 contributionsAmazing time in the rainforestWe had an amazing time during the four hour exterme rainforest tour. Pepe was our tour guide, and he was well versed in the history of the country and the area we traveled. We were the only vechile on the tour, so the experience was not delayed or rushed. During our time, we went to two waterfalls. One had a pool where we swam, an overlook that allowed us to see Manuel National Park Ocean and a restaurant in the mountains with delicious food and coffee. We sped through mud, rivers, dirt, and paved roads and went deep into the jungle. Our time and money were spent. I highly recommend this tour.Written 17 December 2024

Seriously, he customized an adventure that met our wants and time restrictions, the land is beautiful, the waterfalls were refreshing. - iisink0 contributionsHORRIBLE EXPERIENCEHad a horrible experience. Reading a lot of similar reviews on this place with similar experiences! Major red flags from the start. They took a 7,000 deposit for all the vehicles my friends and I rented . When we got back they tried extorting us and we felt very rushed and pressured! I would not recommend this place at all. It’s a big scam operation and not safe at all ! No horrible communication. BEWAREWritten 2 October 2024

Spent around 30 minutes at the waterfall, 30 minutes at this restaurant/bar at the top of a hill with a nice scenic view. I ordered a nice tequila sunrise and pina colata. The rest of the time driving. The guide offered to take a bunch of pictures and. Really fun tour went during rainy season and was super cool.Written 23 August 2024
- Daydream2995480 contributionsAbsolutely amazing experience!!AXR and our tour guide Pepe was the BEST PART of our Costa Rica tour. Pepe was genuine, personable, direct, transparent, and professional. He truly deserves a raise! We also did the horseback riding which was peaceful and healing. We appreciate AXR and one day hope to come back to Jaco for another tour!Written 7 August 2024
- 7766heath0 contributionsATV tours with friendsATV tour with Carlos as a guide was awesome. We took two quads as there were eight of us and some did not want to drive. The road was very scenic and we stopped several times to take photos. The waterfall was beautiful and the hike to see it was very well laid out and safe. Next stop was to jump from a small cliff. The water was very refreshing in both spots. The restaurant on the mountain was so good and probably one of my favorite meals while in Jaco. If you take this tour, make sure you ask for Carlos.Written 23 July 2024

Our family had a wonderful day with Luis in a buggy tour of Jaco’s surrounding mountains. The views were outstanding and Luis did a nice job of explaining landscapes and the local nature along the way. The jump into the waterfall pool was very refreshing. The tour included a stop at a local restaurant atop one of the mountains. We decided to have lunch there. Prices were good and the food very good. My daughter and I had ceviche and my wife had rice and beans with pork. Yummers all the way around. It was also the first time I had limonada con yerba buena or lemonade with mint. i had one at every meal afterwards. Crazy refreshing even when I added a shot (or two) of Tito’s the last few nights. Lastly, the equipment we used was in great shape and we never felt rushed in any way. We recommend this tour thru AXR.

My wife and I went to Jaco in March of last year and I wanted to make sure I wrote a review on our experience with AXR An Xtreme Rider before time ran out to do so. We used this establishment on another trip to Jaco in 2017 and I cannot say enough good things about them. In 2017 we did a 2 hour tour and knew the next time we needed to do a longer ride, so this time we did the 4 hour tour on the side by side buggy vehicle and it was so much fun!! We absolutely loved our guide Oscar, who was the best guide ever!! That day we were the only ones on the tour and he gave us the best personal attention. He explained that this ATV tour company does a variety of routes whereas others often do the same every time. He asked us what it was that we wanted to see and personally tailored the route just for us. My wife is on oxygen and has to carry a portable oxygen concentrator machine with her. Oscar was so attentive to this and made sure that we went to a waterfall where we could drive the vehicle as close as possible with very minimal walking for her. Her oxygen machine needs to be kept out of the dust and we were a little concerned about this, but we made sure we rode at least 50 meters behind his vehicle on the dusty stretches, and we were able to stay clear of the dust quite well. This company is the only one we will use when we visit Jaco in the future and look forward to seeing these fine folks again!!

My family (myself, husband, and two kids 12 and 15 years old) booked the four hour Buggy Tour with Henry as our guide. We had a great deal of fun plowing through the water along the ATV paths in the fields and hills surrounding Jaco. The highlight, however, was when Henry gave everyone (including my kids) a turn driving his ATV on the beach. We were off the road and the beach was empty, so I felt it was safe for my kids to try -- and they LOVED IT. Another highlight was when Henry got behind the wheel of the buggy and we drove up a shallow river. This made the trip so much more fun than just riding around in the buggy (driving is much more fun than being a passenger). Once my kids are old enough and have their driver's license, we'll return to rent the ATVs.

We did the full day tour and it was petty disappointing. We started out driving for quite awhile on regular roads, which we then turned off onto a dried up riverbed. Most of the ride was on roads or the dried up riverbed. We did go through a few areas of the creek that were deep and thank God we did because it was hot and there was zero water on the trip. It's advertised that water is included and there was none. We had my 76 year old mom with us and it was almost 90 degrees and little shade. Thankfully some of us brought water bottles. The beaches we went to had filthy brown water so we weren't able to get in. Our guide seemed more interested in being on his cell phone than showing us his country. We drove under 20+ Macaw parrots and rather than stopping to let us watch them, he kept driving! We did not get to try local moonshine as someone mentions, nor did we see any chocolate, we didn't stop at the waterfall and our guide told us it was a 15 minute hike to the waterfall and that it wasn't that good. The original place we were supposed to have lunch, we did not go and our guide said it was closed and the food was bad anyway. So we went to a different place that was decent. All in all-I would not waste your time or money on this tour.

Hey there,
The full-day tour is quite the adventure. Six hours of adventuring into our rainforest and/or the beach. Right now it is the hottest time of the year, and the driest. Some parts of the riverbed will be a bit dry, but not completely. In regards to the local moonshine, it is hit-or-miss; it is not promised.... it is if the vendor is around. Same with chocolate or even sugarcane- it is hit or missed, but never promised. The trail to the waterfall is 15 to 30 minutes down, and longer up. Since your mother was with you, the guide is all about safety first and had decided your mother would not be able to endure the walk. He then decided to take your group to the beach. Our beaches, in the recent weeks, have been experiencing red-tide, which produces a red/brown hue. It fluctuates with the current where it will hit the beaches on our coastline. On the weekdays, restaurants in the hills will close depending on how busy the town is. You went with one of our most enthusiastic guides. Hopefully, you will be able to enjoy, in the future, every aspect of our beautiful country.

If you are staying in or near Jaco, this is a do not miss! We rode through streams, up dusty trails (buy the $5 bandana), and our wonderful guide Alberto, stopped at the most scenic areas where we could take photons of the breathtaking mountains, the ocean beyond the mountains, clear water pools, etc. We stopped at a small restaurant on the way back to Jaco where they serve lunch or snacks and have a restroom (important when you are on a 4 hour tour!). We also stopped to watch at a paragliding launch area where several paragliders were already in the air or about to launch. In all, a great way to spend a morning or an afternoon

Our family did an ATV/Buggy trip with Henry our guide today and it was worth every $ we spent. The vehicles were sturdy and felt safe for our two children ages 6 and 8 years, and Henry was courteous and knowledgeable! He was easy going with our children and an instant hit with our six year-old son. Would definitely recommend if you are looking for this kind of adventure! We certainly made some memories today!

Visiting waterfalls, driving through the river, visiting the beach, stopping at peaks with the most beautiful views and learning about the wildlife in the area.
