I've rafted the Gauley and New River in West Virginia, among others. This trip on the Savegre was at least as fun and still safe for our pre-teen son and his cousins. They all said this was their favorite excursion ever in Costa Rica, and I don't blame them.

We drove to the Tucanes Tours HQ outside Quepos on the morning of our trip and met our friendly bus driver, Super Mario. The bus has a roof onto which they strap the boats, but is open on the sides (with proper railings). We headed down the highway a little way, then turned on a road to head upstream next to the Savegre.

Along the way, we stopped at a primary school. Costa Ricans are (and should be) proud that they have an excellent education system. We drove through little villages going up into the mountains. Orlando harvested a cacao fruit off a tree and we got to taste the berries. They pointed out hawks by the roadside and teak plantations. Honestly, the drive upriver in the bus was pretty and informative and almost worth the fee itself.

Then we got to the river and the staff got the boats down and fitted us to gear. They use good equipment--almost exclusively NRS, I noticed. We were impressed that there would be a safety kayaker in addition to a guide in each raft. An additional kayaker went on the trip, but his job was to paddle ahead and set up to take photos.

Any gear that you don't want to take on the river with you, you leave in the cab of Mario's bus. All he does after dropping you off is head down to the takeout spot downriver, so it's safe with him.

The kids were a little scared when we first got on the river, but our guide Nico had us all practice taking strokes and getting down on the floor of the raft. I've had good and bad whitewater rafting guides. A good one shouldn't make you do all that much paddling to correct course, and you can tell when you've charted the intended course through the rapids. Nico was very good, but all the while making it fun.

I think he played it a little safe with us, having us get down in the floor of the boat pretty often, but I think that was the right move with three boys aged 9-11 in the boat. We hit the standing waves, all got soaked, and were all smiles the whole time.

The Savegre is just beautiful. Crystal clear water, beautiful nature on either side of the river, and some interesting twists and turns in the river. Plenty of deep pools in which to swim between rapids.

At one point, we pulled over to the side and hiked a short way to a beautiful waterfall. We got some family pictures taken there and let the water run over our helmeted heads.

When we pulled out at the takeout spot, Super Mario the bus driver had already set up a fruit buffet of yummy watermelon and pineapple, water and tea. Then he just started grabbing nearby plants and showing the kids how they could slap this fern on their skin and make a temporary spore tattoo, touch this plant and the leaf closes up in reaction, and scratch this bark because it's cinnamon.

We were all tired but elated from the rafting trip, so it was a quieter ride back to Tucanes Tours HQ, but when we got there, we were offered use of the big, clean bathrooms (with showers and changing rooms) and then sat down for a really excellent typical casado meal. Often, tour operators who include lunch with your tour have a captive audience and don't need to serve excellent food, but all of us really enjoyed our lunches.

The photographer came by with an iPad to show us some of the photos. If you want to purchase, you pay a flat fee for all the pictures of your group. I *think* it was $40 for our group of 7. We have found that experiences are more valuable in the long run than material toys, and photos often help us remember and be grateful for the experiences, so we bought the photos. I'm including some in this review. As you can see, the photographer did an excellent job. They emailed me a link later to download the photos.

COVID: All the guides got on the bus wearing face masks. We asked if we had to wear them, and they said it was up to us. Since we had all been vaccinated and were riding open air, we elected to take ours off, and only then did the guides. We put our masks back on to walk through the restaurant (as is usual these days in CR), but felt comfortable taking them off to eat since the Tucanes Tours restaurant is, like most in CR, open air.

We were impressed with everything about this trip: the river, the rapids, the guides, the safety equipment and protocols of Tucanes Tours, the drive, the snack, the lunch, and the photos.

All of the activities organized by Toucanes were a hit (especially ziplining!) We loved our guides — Danny, Carla and especially the whitewater rafting guides Orlando, Nicholas and Christian. The river was the real - deal -- we brought kids 9 and up. The zipline guides were great with our family. A guide can really make or break an experience so thank you for making sure we were taken care of.

What a fun experience !!! This was honestly the favorite tour we did during our entire stay in Costa Rica. The staff was amazing!! They really cared about your safety. They made sure everyone was comfortable and informed about what was happening and expected. They also truly loved what they do and made sure we loved it as well. We had Orlando as our guide and we loved him!!! Great group of people and a really fun activity.

Was a little apprehensive about this activity, being in our middle ages, but the guys made it a fun experience. The water levels were not high so it was a good introduction to rafting. A fun day, great guides, lunch, fresh air. Definitely a must-do experience of you are here

Dear Ivanas205, Thank you for your five bubble review on Tripadvisor! We're delighted your rafting tour with us was so amazing! Next time you come you should try the "El Chorro section", a class IV, navegable only in low season; plenty of adrenaline & action, but still safe. ¡Gracias y saludos!

We had a great day rafting. The class II / III rapids were perfect for our family (kids ages 12-18). Not too easy and not too crazy. Miguel was a great guide and lots of fun. We also loved the pit stop at the waterfall that we could swim in. We had lunch back at their restaurant when the tour was over that was awesome as well. All the kids said this was one of their favorite activities that we did or "the" favorite. One of my daughters did not want to go rafting at all and ended up loving it!

We are a family of 5 with children aged 8, 13, and 14, We went for this excursion as we had never rafted on white water before. The water wasn't at its highest, but wasn't at its lowest either. There were plenty of "rapids" yet. Marcos was our adventure guide and did a wonderful job at making sure none of us fell in the water. He did give us thrills when he paddled back to a big drop and had us go down it 3 times. That was the highlight for me. We did walk in to the waterfall, but didn't spend a lot of time there. At the place where we ended the raft ride, there was a hanging bridge above the river. The kids enjoyed that extra bonus that we hadn't expected. Thank you to Orlando for all the info you gave us on the way to the river and a big shout out to MARCOS, our excellent river guide.

Fun experience for this group of 6 adults from Dallas, TX. We had to make this last minute change due to our boat trip cancelling. They were very accommodating to us. Lunch was great. Angel Miguel, Orlando and Mario were awesome!!! There is an 1.5 drive to the start of the river. Knowledgable, fun, and safe. They offered pictures but we declined. You WILL get wet, but the temperature was perfect. They will even let you jump out if you want (I suggest that). Beautiful scenery. Highly recommend!

My wife and I had a great time on this rafting trip. Our guides were Orlando, Miguel, and Darian. They did a great job! On the way out to the river we stopped a few times along the way as our guides pointed out different plants that are harvested in Costa Rica to make chocolate, cosmetics, medicines, etc... Once at the river we got outfitted with our gear, and had a good safety briefing before heading out on the water. Our guides did a great job of making the trip fun and exciting while keeping an eye out for hazards and navigating the river safely. We stopped once along the way to hike back a short distance to a water fall where we took pictures and swam for a while before heading back. We finished our trip without incident, and headed back for a good lunch before being dropped off at our resort. I would definitely recommend this trip.
