After port pickup in Haines, start your shore excursion with a seaside drive to Chilkoot Lake State Park. With significant Tlingit cultural sites, a salmon-filled river flowing into the sea, and a turquoise lake surrounded by snow-capped mountains, the park is also abundant with wildlife; keep an eye out for bald eagles, brown bears, and migratory birds often seen here.
Arriving at the lake, take in the scenery and board your double sea kayak. Your guide will show you the basics of paddling and, outfitted with the proper gear, you’ll soon be gliding silently along the shores of the uncrowded lake. Massive waterfalls spill off of the glaciated peaks and cliffs surrounding the lake, and lush green forests border the shoreline. Pause at the base of a waterfall where your guide will reveal the secret workings of the rain forest. Beginning in July, sockeye salmon spawn in one of the clear streams that feed into the lake.
After you paddle back to shore, lunch is provided. Your guide will drive you back to Haines, and if time permits, give a guided driving tour of downtown and historic Fort William H. Seward. Return to your ship filled with memories and photographs from an unforgettable adventure.
