We were on a Princess Cruise and my friend dragged me to see a speaker from the Deadliest Catch TV show. I kept telling her that I had never watched the show and I really didn’t want to be there. She said I should give it a chance.

Once Captain David Lethin started talking, I was mesmerized, listening to his experiences. As a teacher, his stories about leaving school against his father’s wishes and going off to sea came close to many stories I had heard, and when he pulled things back together and made a turnaround, I was almost in tears. His PowerPoint and video presentation was interesting and the excursion moved from my “No Way” to my “Must Do” list.

David Lethin’s boat, the Aleutian Ballad from Season 2 of Deadliest Catch, was damaged by a 60 foot rogue wave. After a $3-million retrofit, Lethin hired crew members and other Bering Sea crab fishermen to tell their stories while they pulled up pots of sea creatures that guests were able to see, touch, and hold. On the Aleutian Ballad, I spoke with Captain Ron Zwahlen, Andy, Big D, and Captain Terry.

I learned the difference between a prawn and a shrimp and other interesting facts. The highlight was seeing so many eagles up close. I highly recommend this excursion. You won’t be disappointed.

We went on three different excursions, all were excellent but this was the best of the best
Family operation, genuine people - they love what they do and it shows. They are knowledgeable and work hard to ensure a trip full of memories. Witnessed over 25 eagles within feet of the vessel that would come from the high trees to the boat in native Indian waters.
The eagles in their wild habitat was worth the cost but we saw working crab traps pulled up with lots of crabs, octopus, prawns AND did I mention true stories from fishing the Bering Sea.
This will be the excursion we will be talking about years from now
Truly an impressive day on the water

This tour is hands down our all time favorite tour in Alaska! Captain David has a phenomenal crew and offers an informative overview of what life is like on a crab boat in the Bering Sea! Seeing firsthand what it’s like to haul crab pots, getting to experience handling crab, starfish, octopus, etc, all kinds of sea life was amazing and the highlight was witnessing easily over 20+ Bald Eagles in their natural habitat!! Throw in getting to hear Captain David and his crew sharing their personal stories was such an honor to share in.. plus the opportunity to be able to ask so many questions about what life is like on the Bering Sea on a crab boat, we learned so much more about the differences between the various types of crabs, etc, being able to indulge in eating some of the best King Crab legs, etc, etc, well.. this excursion simply has it all!! Hands down the best excursion in Alaska and should be a must do on everyone’s plans when visiting Ketchikan! Many thanks to Captain David and his crew for making our Alaskan trip a most memorable one!!

We booked this excursion in Ketchikan and it was absolutely amazing! We had a blast and it was great to hear the crew's personal stories and experiences. We learned a lot about crabs during the tour. It was amazing to see the eagles flying so close to the boat and got some great video. I would definitely recommend this excellent tour and I would certainly do it again. Thank you for such a great time.

We are fans of the show (RIP Phil) and were super excited for this excursion. It is pricey so it was a big decision for a family of 3. I'm so glad we did it. It was worth every penny. Not only do you see some amazing wildlife, but the crew share their personal stories that make it just a moment to treasure. We cried at the stories, laughed at the jokes, and had an amazing time. We could not recommend enough.

This really was a great experience. My wife and I were interested because of the connection to Deadliest Catch, and seeing the Aleutian Ballad did not disappoint. Very comfortable, great crew and incredibly interesting stories. This is far beyond a sight-seeing tour. Highly recommend

Went here summer of 2019! The deadliest catch, bald eagles, and information is fun. What’s not fun? The octopus they have prisoner in a small black capsule...they also claim he “likes it” there and just feeds it some prawns each tour before locking it back into a tiny black plastic capsule!!! And the touristy gimmick of signing a plastic tag and attaching it to a crab pot with zip ties. As if the ocean didn’t have enough plastic in it 🥱 please do better for the octopus, the sea, and your tourists

Hi Sarah, thank you for expressing your concerns. We strive to be an educational and eco friendly excursion. Over the 14 years we have been operating we are constantly observing and adapting our program to conserve the sea life to the best of our ability. I’m not sure if it wasn’t explained properly but we catch octopus in our other gear, mainly the prawn pots about every two days. At that point we rotate the animals and if we don’t catch and octopus we let the other one go before it becomes distressed. At that point we will not have an octopus in the program until we catch another one at a later time. The black capsule that you are referring to is a 40 gallon barrel that creates more than enough room for the 20 pound octopus as they prefer dark small places in their natural habitat. With regards to the plastic tags, we have welcomes our guests to write a memory of a loved one they want to remember and any donations that are raised go to fishing families that have died in the industry. These funds are raised nation wide and help fill in the financial gaps. To our knowledge, we have not lost any tags at this point but we will continue to monitor. We understand that some parts of the program are not for everyone, but the tags are special for maybe guests. Thank you for your feedback and I hope that I explained our reasoning for why we have the tags and octopus the way they are. If you have any ideas that we can implant please let me know!

Best shore excursions ever! Freaking amazing. Just the eagles alone blow your mind. The guys 👍❤️😂. If this is the only thing you do on your cruise or in Ketchikan, so worth it. The stories, the sea life, and the people are all amazing. The water was like glass. We saw a giant halibut, crabs, tons of eagles, and other sea creatures. Captain Dave and the crew are super nice people. Ron……. I love you man! It was his third day on the tour. The crazy man holding the crab in my picture, sorry I don’t remember your name, but you were a crack up.😝. I can’t really put into words how amazing. If you can score a spot on this excursions, it is worth every penny! Best day ever!

Fun for all ages. This tour is family owned and was worth our time and money. The crew made us feel like family. We experienced crab fishing, touched all kinds of live sea creatures and enjoyed watching the crew feed the eagles as we watched them dive for food right in front of our eyes. They also provided warm waterproof jackets and fresh steamed crab with drawn butter. It doesn't get any better. A tour we will always remember.

I booked this for our stop in Ketchikan, and it turned out to be the BEST tour we took in Alaska in the 2 weeks we were there. believe me when I say we took a lot of tours! My entire family loved it - it was a little pricey but worth it. We saw so many sea creatures, it was unlike anything we have ever experienced. The best part was when they stopped where there were a bunch of eagles, and gave them fish. Countless eagles soared right over you for several minutes - unbelievable! One of our favorite memories of our trip. The staff was vey informative and made sure everyone had an opportunity to see the various sealife that was on the boat. My husband gets seasick and he was fine as the water is very calm. Don't hesitate - book this tour!!!
