Itinerary
- 1An amazing 8 mile journey along the coast takes you to the exclusive Alaska Rainforest Sanctuary, a private reserve located in the forested mountains at rustic Herring Cove. This refined natural environment is home to bald eagles, black bear, seals, a variety of birds and other species attracted by the major salmon runs in the abundant marine estuary. In addition to wildlife viewing opportunities, this tour enables you to see and photograph live eagles up close, observe reindeer, and to observe a master native totem pole carver at work. You will be greeted by your naturalist and guided along an improved trail through the heart of the dense forest, amongst tall stands of hemlock, spruce and Alaska cedar. The forest floor is covered with mosses, wild flowers and a variety of berries. Stops will be made at strategically located viewing areas. Your guide will lead you to a protected open estuary, where you follow Eagle Creek along an elevated wooden boardwalk overlooking grassy wetlands. Major runs of salmon return to spawn here. Watch and listen to the symphony of bird activity in this spectacular setting. During the spawning season bears and seals feed on salmon in Eagle Creek and the likelihood of viewing these fascinating animals is good. Bald eagles and other birds wait for scraps in the estuary. Sitka black tail deer, mink and marten also frequent the area. Seasonal ecosystem changes result in varying levels of wildlife activity. If you like nature, you will love this tour. At the conclusion of the half-mile trail hike you will have an opportunity to visit the Alaska Wildlife Foundation, a non-profit organization. Take the opportunity to feed their Alaskan reindeer as well as see raptors up close as a raptor specialist explains the heritage and habitat of the different species. Following these great photographic opportunities, you will be guided through the historic Herring Bay Lumber Company sawmill, established by legendary pioneer Ben Fleenor. Observe a master native totem pole carver at work and enjoy his many works in front of our General Store. Explore the interpretive displays and enjoy complimentary refreshments while browsing in the General Store. Included: Rain ponchos if necessary. Complimentary coffee, hot chocolate, tea and a smoked salmon snack in general store. Admission to the Southeast Alaska Discovery Center. Please Note: Wildlife sightings not guaranteed. Requires approximately 1/2 mile walk on possibly uneven terrain through forest. Not recommended for guests with mobility issues.

- TotalGourmand0 contributionsWildlife and food experiencesA short drive from Ketchikan to Clover Pass Resort, which is one of the oldest resort in Alaska, to catch a boat to sail through narrow channels passing small island 30 minutes later arrive at Grant Island in a sound high in the Haida Gwaii main channel. Landing at the pier and a short walk takes one up to the Frank Hendershot Memorial Trail passing the Silverking Lodge. An elevated boardwalk trail lets you to walk into the normally difficult-to-access rainforest. A great variety of flora is visible and helpfully there are panels explaining the item such as Old Man's Beard and nursery trees. At the end of the trail, a majestic largest known red cedar stands in the Tongass National Forest. This large evergreen tree has upturned 'J' shaped branches and the bark is used by indigenous people to weave baskets which are traditionally used for carrying water and storing food. More than 55 inches of rain along the Southeast Coast of Alaska and British columbia makes Tongass Forest the largest temperate rain forest in the world. The ground is covered in vegetation and 'Muskeg'. Muskeg consists of dead plants in various stages of decomposition. It acts as a sponge continually absorbing and releasing water in to streams and rivers. Although not a wildlife reserve, small wild life is abundant and sightings are possible on any given day. Rooms are rustic in style with two twin beds and plenty of hot water for showers. The living area includes a fireplace, games, and satellite TV. Anglers love to come for the King Salmon, Silver Salmon, Chum Salmon, Sockeye Salmon, Pink Salmon, Halibut, and Rock Fish. The seafood boil lunch which consists of fresh Dungeness Crab, shrimp, mussels, clams, sausage, corn on the cob, garlic, pearl onions, and potatoes as well as perfect lemonades and 'cookies'. Anyone with allergies will be offered an alternative meal on request. On the way back to Clover Pass Resort seals are seen lounging on shores of Joe Island and Bald eagles swoop down from high trees to catch fish off Hump Island. US Naval Surface Warfare Centre based on Back Island is a submarine identifying training establishment.Written 26 October 2024
- Melissa K0 contributionsGlorified Uber ride to places you could walk to yourself. It was a glorified Uber ride to places that we could have walked to ourselves. Supposed to be small group, but really 3 vans of 12 traveling together. Our driver was kind of clueless didn't want to wear his seat belt and alarm kept ringing until he would finally put it on 5 minutes in after we said something. We asked him questions but he didn't know the answers. He admitted he doesn't have a spiel about what we were seeing so not a guided tour. He didn't stop to take pictures like other van driver did. And didn't really drive well. So now for the "tour" itself. It was very rushed with not enough time at each location. First stop raptor trust. Tickets if we went on own would be $16. It was cool seeing the injured birds and learning about them. We only had 30 mins to explore. Next stop fortress of the bears. That was disappointing. I saw 4 bears living in an enclosure kind of small. Felt sorry for them. I've seem better ones at zoos. $15 ticket cost to get in. Next stop totem pole park. Getting off the van ( no picture he was like well I guess we could do this later) We walked to the salmon bridge. The driver did talk about the salmon and give some info. Then said walk around with only about 15 minutes then time to get back to the van. You need WAY more time than that. Visitors center was very informative, movie to watch and native artifacts which was free!. That alone was over15 minutes. The totem park is 113 acres with 20 totem poles. You need at least an hour for that alone. While walking around we found a path that lead right to the raptor trust! We did not take the van back. We stayed longer explored and walked back to town. The totem pole park is an 8 minute walk from town. We could have walked to the park and did the raptors on our own and it would have cost $16. Bears not worth seeing. I paid $339 for 2 people and admission cost was only $62. It was by no means a guided tour, way overpriced. Don't do. Very disappointing.Written 22 August 2024
- Sightseer686440632750 contributionsThe Best!We had a Awesome Experience. Boat Captain Justin, Naturalist Kacie, and Taylor did a great job in making sure we all had a wonderful time. We even got in on a group of Orcas, that is usually hard to find. Great Experience!Written 19 July 2024
- CindyCarling0 contributionsFind Another OptionWe booked with this group so we could have a small group tour. Easy to get in and out, not have to have unnecessary waiting around. The "van" had trouble so we had to wait for another vehicle. We were going to be put in a van group with another family that had added a few members to their group, with a man with a wheelchair. It would have been nice to know this could happen because it slows things down. If we had know this was possible we could have tried to make other arrangements. We were traveling with friends that needed assistance and this was our turn to have time without the need to do a tour with ADA restrictions. We fully support ADA tours and are grateful they are available. It ended up there was not enough space on that van so we were told we were going to be in a comfortable Cadillace Escalade. We were with 3 other passengers and ended up in the back of the car that had a 3rd row seat that would only fit very small children...not comfortable. We were told we were going to change into a van so we could all be more comfortable. The driver talked constantly and missed the turn for their office. The driver dropped the 5 of us off at a new first destination, and then met us at the location at the end with a van. I tried to pay in advance, but they wanted to wait for the excursion to be over. I tried to pay at the end and they were busy and not able to take my payment on the phone. I was told they would call me back to get payment. They did call and I gave my credit card and was told it would show up on my billing statement as a funeral home. Two days later another person called to get payment, I told them I had already paid. they said "oh, okay." The accounting is a mess. Over all it was poorly run, the vehicles were not great and the accounting was not managed well.Written 14 July 2024

- Explore763510 contributionsTotems, eagles and bears... OH MY!Jim was thee best tour guide! If you're ever in Sitka, definitely book this excursion. Jim was earnestly well versed on the ares and the animals. Not only that, but he took us to get hot dogs too, lol!!!Written 5 July 2024
- Philip H0 contributionsSitka Raptor, Bears and Totem Poles. Very disappointed in the lack of information provided by the tour guide.Trip Advisor did not send email 14 days before with tour time as said. Found out 2 days before that my tour time affected us getting on our ship by gangway up. Had to call and spent $2 a minute to explain my situation. Very upsetting. The tour itself was subpar. Not much information given about Sitka. Tour guide, Alex, had a difficult time answering questions. Not worth $295 for 2 people. We basically walked thru the museums on our own. Very disappointed in this Sitka Tour.Written 1 July 2024
- Rebecca W0 contributionsHighly, highly recommend the rail, suspension bridge, and bus tour in Skagway Alaska! We did the Rail, Summit, & Suspension Bridge with Brunch walk in Skagway, Alaska on 6/9/24 - my husband and I plus two teenage boys, ages 15 and 17. It was fantastic!!! One of the best excursions we did in Alaska and we did a lot and they were all pretty impressive! The train ride was incredible! The views and the terrain are hard to describe - something you’ve got to see for yourself! We even got to stand outside the cars and take pictures. And the suspension bridge was a sight to behold all on its own. Some of the most incredible pictures we took the whole trip were taken here. Then we had a bus ride back to the cruise ship which included 2 more scenic stops - one which had a waterfall! Seriously, this excursion was PACKED with goodness. Highly recommended!Written 16 June 2024
- mercymoi20 contributionsExcellent tour of Hoonah, Culture and Wild LifeRead about the tour on a Cruise Critic message board. Very glad we did. It was a great tour from Jack and Howard. They picked us up outside Icy Strait Point and took us around Hoonah including their home and the surrounding area. They made sure we saw lots of wildlife. Both Jack and Howard have a passion for their culture and town. An excellent tour.Written 2 June 2024

- RuthyGlasgow0 contributionsWhat an amazing tour, and getting to hold the puppies!Amazing tour. You get to sled with the husky dogs with the musher at the back guiding the dogs and they go at some speed. It was thrilling! The noise of the dogs who are aching to run, that's their life, to run. As soon as they start to run they stop barking? Unbelievable. Then some hot chocolate or other beveridge, wee talk on the trails the huskies took years ago when the diphtheria virus struck and to get the medicine to the children . All about the Husky race every year. So very interesting. Then the really good point, in holding the husky puppies. So cute. Best tour of all.Written 10 October 2023
- T3362BIsusanh0 contributionsBears OMG, bears and eaglesNice excursion. Seeing the bears up close was amazing and a real treat. They feed the 2 brown bears while we were there and they stood on their hind legs to catch the salmon. The other bears were happily lounging, not pacing back and forth as I have seen in zoos. They appear very content to live at the fortress. 5* I highly recommend and the money you pay helps keep the fortress going to help the injured eagles and bears.Written 26 September 2023
- marykF4756GN0 contributionsA marvelous way to escape Ketchikan crowdsWith 4 cruise ships in port of Ketchikan, we decided to take an adventure away from town. Silverking lodge is situated on an island making it a 'personal' experience. (ok, there were 40 of us, but not a crowd). The boat ride included numerous eagle siting, and sea lion. The rainforest walk was very interesting. I would not have figured the dense growth of the area would be attributed to a rain forest environment. The crab feast was plentiful, and delicious. But more importantly, the hosts were warm, friendly and very helpful.Written 9 September 2023
- TravelTripper220 contributionsBad experience!Do not take this tour! Where do I begin? We were going to be on shore from a cruise and had to make sure the tour didn't start until after 11 am. We could never receive the necessary information. The customer service lines with Viator all go to the Philippines. For 2 days I was on hold for over 4 hours as the agents were hard to communicate with and could never reach the tour operator. There was a portal to contact the tour operator but he would not respond for 2 days. He is located in the UK. So here I am headed to Sitka AK and the vendor is in the Philippines and the operator works out of the UK. Three different time zones. A nightmare. When he finally answered me he said I was to meet Baranof Tours. I had already cancelled my tour with Viator. I simply booked with Baranof directly. Had an identical tour for $100 less money. No middleman in the UK. Viator is getting a blackeye using far flung operators that do not have local contacts. Apparently the UK operator contracts with Baranof and then resells the tours at a high mark up. Just call Baranof directly.Written 4 September 2023

Fantastic hike through the Alaska rainforest sanctuary with an excellent guide Emily. We watched eagles fish for salmon and visited the Alaskan Raptor Center for injured birds. A must do tour for the nature lover! Our tour included Totem Park where we learned about Totem history and creation.

We never went with My Holidays Online but with Alaskan onshore tours. We had a wonderful tour and initially saw a black bear run across the road on our way there. We also saw a deer run across the road. The rainforest wildlife center was great and we also saw a black bear in the meadows along with lots of bald eagles. We saw some beautiful caged birds (due to injury for their protection). We also saw totem poles being carved. Just an amazing visit.

Took the black bear and wildlife exploration while in port from my cruise. Told we needed to be quiet to not scare the wildlife. Seems pretty pointless, when you have zipliners screaming and yelling overhead, loud vehicles continually going up and down the road carry the people to their destinations. The serenity of the forest was completely ruined. Not to mention that no wildlife was seen except for an eagle. I am sure the noise spooked anything within hearing range. We were supposed to see a master totem carver in action but he was on break so our guides read us the signs that were posted around the mill. Snack was a ritz cracker with salmon spread and coffee. This was not worth the $
