About
Discover Pretoria’s top sights on this 5-hour sightseeing tour from Johannesburg. With an expert guide, admire the highlights of South Africa’s elegant administrative capital, nicknamed the ‘Jacaranda City,’ for its annual purple jacaranda blooms, and learn about its tangled history. Stop outside the imposing Palace of Justice, where Nelson Mandela was sentenced to life in 1964, and see the Union Buildings where he was made president 30 years later. Plus, visit Kruger House, once home to Boer leader Paul Kruger, and the mighty Voortrekker Monument, before your return to Johannesburg.

What to expect
  • Begin your tour with a pickup from your Sandton or Rosebank hotel, then settle into an air-conditioned coach or minivan for the drive to Pretoria. Along the way, listen as your expert guide sets the stage with history and information about the administrative capital of South Africa. Start your tour in Pretoria by walking with your guide along some of the tree-lined streets that explode with color every spring when the jacaranda trees bloom. These trees are the reason for the city’s unofficial moniker of ‘Jacaranda City.’ Hear about Pretoria’s origins as a Boer farming community, and how it became the capital of Transvaal—the Afrikaans name of the South African Republic—in 1860. Continue the tour with a walk to Church Square, surrounded by some very important buildings in the country’s history. The Palace of Justice is where Nelson Mandela received a life sentence in 1964. Pause to reflect that not far away, at the Union Buildings, Mandela became the first post-apartheid president of South Africa three decades later. See the statue of 19th-century Boer leader Paul Kruger, the first president of the South African Republic, and then tour his restored home to learn more about the figure many still call ‘Old Lion.’ Climb back into your minivan or coach for a drive to the Voortrekker Monument just outside Pretoria. This iconic stone monument is dedicated to the Voortrekkers (pioneers) who made the difficult journey in covered wagons and on foot into what is now South Africa in the 19th century to build settlements. Relax on the drive back to your Johannesburg hotel. Please note: The order of stops listed above is subject to change.

Pretoria!
We were so fortunate to have
Tsholo, our Johannesburg guide from yesterday! He picked us up at our guest house and drove us to Pretoria while explaining the history along the way. The Voortrekker monument, the Union Building, Church Square and the Paul Kruger Museum were all fascinating. Tsholo is very knowledgeable, courteous and professional.
