What to expect
Begin with a pickup from your central Durban hotel and set off for Durban’s ‘Golden Mile,’ a popular stretch of beachfront with hotels, restaurants, and shops. You may see traditional healers at the water’s edge, collecting seawater in bottles to use as medicine, or Indian women in saris walking on the beach to enjoy the sunny weather. Drive past Durban City Hall, hearing amusing stories about its history from your guide, followed by a visit to the Phansi Museum (admission not included). The exhibits featured in this museum include Zulu jewelry and ceramics as well as other South African artifacts. Explore the museum with your guide before making your way to the city’s Botanic Gardens. The gardens were established in 1849 and the plants growing throughout the property are a mix of African as well as American and Asian in origin. Learn about the influence of Indian immigrants on Durban’s history, including the cuisine—sample some famous South African ‘Bunny Chow.’ Take a cable car ride (at your own expense) to the top of Moses Mabhida Stadium to savor the views before returning to your hotel.

Enjoyed the gardens but expected more
Our guide was charming and knowledgeable but the tour itself was a bit disappointing. We enjoyed the gardens and spice market but we were not taken to the museum, as promised. Also, we thought the tour would be better if we went into City Hall rather than standing by the ocean for a long period. There was a great deal to see otherwise.

A great introduction to Durban
Mar 2019
We took this tour on our first day in Durban. We're picked up from our hotel in an airconditioned van by our tour guide. First we drove through the golden mile to get to know the history and development of Durban. Next we visited areas of new developments replacing the old, shabby buildings near the port. Then drove into the city, looked at lovely old buildings, many small shops selling a variety of items from clothing to fruits and veggies, even from back of small trucks on the side of the streets and queues of people waiting in front of government offices. Then we went to Victoria Market to purchase souvenirs - this was the first time when we could get out of the vehicle and walk around. The market is a good size and not at all busy. Souvenirs in general are cheap but also of poor quality and you are expected to bargain. After 40 minutes we were ready for the next stop- the Botanical gardens - our favourite part of the tour. The gardens are lovely, and you can buy very good coffee at the coffeecart at the gate, and good quality, tasteful souvenirs at the Botanical garden shop. We learnt a lot of very interesting things about the different ways of life of Zulus and whites in South Africa and in Durban from tour guide and he also drove us to the rich area of Durban where we saw massive fences with electrical wires on top and various levels of security. It was a very interesting tour, long enough to learn what we needed to know to plan the next 4 days in Durban and stay safe.

Expected Better
Mar 2019
The city looked a bit run down and in need of a good clean up. The closed down main railway station was littered with a mountain of rubbish, buildings were in a state of disrepair and the main beach front was full of cheap market stalls aimed at tourists dollars (Rand). In parts the city was very beautiful with some very nice buildings. The Botanic Garden is worthy of a visit, very beautiful.
