- Nancy J0 contributionsGreat day with Paul K SafarisPaul picked us up at the cruise port and took us to Natal Lion Park and Tala Game Reserve to see the animals. At Natal we were able to feed and interact with a couple of elephants and see a group of female lions lounging right by the road. In Tala we viewed ostrich, rhinos, zebra, impala, wildebeest and other antelopes. The giraffes we got to see at a distance as the herd had moved to a remote location. After a delicious lunch in the 1000 Hills we returned to Durban for a short drive around the city, then back to the cruise port. A thoroughly enjoyable day with Paul and his expertise as a guide.Written 11 April 2024
- MRichardson20140 contributionsWe got so much more than just a transfer!Paul drove us from Hluhluwe Reserve to Mbabane. In the 5+ hours we spent with him, he shared his extensive knowledge regarding safaris in Southern Africa, wildlife and Swazi history and culture. It was a thoroughly positive experience in a very comfortable vehicle. Paul is friendly, enthusiastic and fun. We would love to do a safari with him.Written 13 November 2023
- skuzmanov19860 contributionsSafari Das-Trip from DurbanI had a wonderful day with Paul in the Hluhluwe Game Reserve. Pickup was on time from my Hotel in Durban. He got in touch with me already ahead of the tour to answer all my open question and provided direct whatsapp contact for any assistance. Always nice, kind and helpful, great guy! His knowledge of the african wilderness is just amazing. He spotted all animals during the tour and gave always opportunity to take a lot of photos and provided useful information. In general it was a fantastic way and I can just everyone recommend this Safari Day-Tour! I did this tour in 12/2020 so he followed all COVID-19 safe measurements and created even in these difficult times a wonderful day! Thanks Paul from Mzansi Safari AfricaWritten 10 December 2020
- Experience6125020 contributionsIncredible ExperienceI attended the safari with my girlfriends in October. The tour staff was warm and friendly. Jeff, our tour guide was very knowledgeable of all the animals and environmental concerns such a global warming that threaten the animals' existence. He allowed us time to take pictures. He advised us when it was unsafe to proceed. I always like to support the indigenous people of the countries I visit. This company is owned by a Zulu woman. The tour included transportation and barbecue lunch with beer, wine, sodas and water. It was a test in patience as we're used to instant gratification from viewing animals in captivity. Jeff was constantly on the lookout for animal spotting. I highly recommend this tour for people that admire nature and want to support their preservation.Written 30 October 2019
- Emma R0 contributionsThe best experience! This was the best experience we had in South Africa. Paul has phenomenal knowledge and is a great guy to spend a few days with. His skills helped us to see the entire big 5 before breakfast one day! We did a 2night/3day tour of the Hluhuwe Imfolozi parks and he sorted everything for us (accommodation, meals, transport). So it was super easy, we didn't have to worry about anything, exactly what we wanted. The plan each day was relaxed depending on what we saw. A highlight was the delicious Braai (bbq) Paul cooked us on the first night, we had a very close encounter with some bush pigs! I'd highly recommend booking with Paul!Written 4 May 2019
- Kathryn P0 contributionsOutstanding Overnight SafariMy two friends and I went on an overnight tour with Paul and we had an incredible time. He has so much knowledge and taught us loads about the wildlife, the landscapes and the areas we travelled through. It really made the journey part of the experience. We had many trip highlights, but the beautiful Hluhluwe reserve was definitely the best. We were lucky enough to see elephants charging at a pair of lions up close, as well as a very fortunate zebra who just escaped the clutches of another lion. I have no idea how Paul can sense something big is about to happen, he has an uncanny ability to get you in the right place at just the right time! His energy and enthusiasm is boundless and we loved our night walk to view glow in the dark scorpions just as much as seeing the big wildlife. Highly recommended.Written 4 September 2018
- carl9410 contributionsAnother outstandling visitMy group travelled with Mzansi back in May-June 2017 but I am just now getting around to posting a review because I have been too busy to write until now. I am a university professor who takes student groups to Southern Africa every year or so. I have made a total of seven of these trips beginning in 2003. I know what I want for the students and I am picky about itinerary, expense and quality of service. I will not book student travel with guides or providers I do not trust or respect. In addition to my trips with students, I have travelled personally in Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe. With all this background in mind, let me say that Mzansi Safari Africa deserves my highest recommendation and strongest support. Mzansi is a small provider who specializes in excellence. For my 2017 group I booked a 16 day trip originating in Johannesburg and ending (with sad goodbyes) at the King Shaka airport in Durban. We visited the Panorama Route, Kruger, Swaziland, KwaZulu-Natal, Hluhluwe and St. Lucia. Mzansi handled all the arrangements flawlessly. They organized and booked the entire expedition to my specifications (except when they fixed my mistakes), with quite a few changes as our group grew to 16 travelers and changed in composition prior to departure. Mzansi’s owner, chief admin person and guiding spirit is Paul Koekemoer. Others have written many positive reviews about Paul and I agree with them 110%. His knowledge about all wildlife is extensive and he has almost a sixth sense about where to find the large, charismatic animals out in the bush. He especially loves to search for leopards. His personality is friendly, engaging and enthusiastic. His energy is boundless from before dawn to after dusk. He kept up with our rambunctious undergraduate students, cooked meals with them, bonded with them, taught them about South Africa and even helped ease their homesickness. He went way above and beyond the call of duty for my students. Paul’s overall helpfulness deserves special mention. Over the years he has offered assistance many times with my questions about general Africa travel, about destinations, lodgings-whatever. He does this even in years when I am not travelling with students or simply need the information for some piece of university paperwork. In short he has become a real resource for me and my students. We depend on him to help organize our travel. This is the level of service you can expect. If you are reading this review then you must be planning a trip to South Africa and in the process of shopping for a provider. Now that you have reached Mzansi you can stop looking. You found the best.Written 21 September 2017
- Jeff N0 contributionsMzansi safarisMzansi safaris put together a great safari for us. The guide, Paul Koekemoer, was informative about all sorts of animals, from the big 5, to birds (to bugs, snakes...). We saw lots of the animals (lions, rhinos, hippos, elephants, giraffes...the list goes on) and always up close - it was an awesome trip. We would recommend Paul and his company absolutely.Written 14 July 2017
- Ron W0 contributionsWhat an experience. My friends and i went on a 2 day tour with Paul and his knowledge and enthusiasm were infectious. - Simon H0 contributionsAmazing Group ExpeditionI organised an expedition for 14 people to conduct a cultural and hiking expedition to Southern Africa and Lesotho. I found Paul online and took a punt on him, boy did it pay off! He was extremely accommodating in helping me to put the itinerary in place. He organised all accommodation, transit, locations and guides where appropriate. His contacts are extensive and very knowledgeable. His honesty and personal knowledge is outstanding. We completed historical tours, the Giants Cup Trail, hiking in Lesotho and a safari. During all of the transits we were treated to his vast passionate knowledge of his country and history to make the long journeys fly by. You almost didn't want to get off the bus! I cannot recommend this man highly enough to look after you from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave. I had to organise this from the UK relying on email and phone calls. I am looking for reasons to organise trips with him again.Written 22 December 2016
- JSHirsch_NYC0 contributionsAmazing... totally amazingWe had **such** a great experience. Wendy our tourguide was really well informed, fun to be with, thoughtful and experienced in organizing things, and just generally terrific. Both lodges we stayed in were wonderful. Overall, it was an amazing experience. Loved the estuary tour and staying overnight in the game park.Written 17 October 2016
- fmaruri0 contributionsOutstandingI booked the one-day tour from Durban to Lesotho with Paul who was very responsive, and made things very easy. It turned out to be a very long day, but it was worth it. I was picked up early in the morning by Wendy who was extremely nice, very knowledgeable and well informed. When we arrived at Underberg we picked up another tour to Sani Pass, Lesotho. The road to Lesotho is beautiful. We went in the winter so take warm clothes, it was cold. We also went to a small Besotho village where we were invited with delicious home made bread, and where they sold some hand-made crafts. After that we went to a lodge where we had lunch. The food was good, but the service very slow, because they were very busy that weekend. Overall it was a great experience worth going if your time is limited. If I had more time, I would have gone on a longer tour.Written 21 July 2016
- stewkartz0 contributionsTour with a passionWe had an amazing personalised 3 day tour of Hluhluwe-Imfolozi with Mzansi Safari Africa. Our guide Paul was eager to please and had a genuine passion for experiencing the animals in their element. Although we didn't get to see the very elusive leopard, Paul was able to track down the other big 4 on every day as well as an assortment of other animals (too many to list). On day 1 as dusk was taking hold, Paul managed to place us in the middle of a 3 lion hunt on a herd of buffalo. It was better than watching a scene from a David Attenborough film! (yes, the buffalo got away). On day 3, thanks to Paul's clever preemptive 6th sense, we tracked a Lion in retreat following a rough encounter with the neighboring pride. Before we knew it we had 4 lions just meters away from us with no other vehicles in sight. As well as Hluhluwe, the tour also included a visit to a wild cat sanctuary where we got to play with baby Cheetahs (hint: scratch them behind the ear and they will purr just like your domestic cat). The tour finished with a cruise on the lagoon at St. Lucia. Loads of Hippos, crocs, birds, and much to our surprise, sharks! I have no hesitation in recommending Paul and Mzansi Safari Africa. As first time visitors to SA, Paul was also brilliant at offering commentary and tips on all things South African.Written 11 June 2016

I had an amazing safari day trip experience as a female solo traveller with Paul Koekemoer at Hluhluwe Imfolozi park. He was very energetic, passionate and knowledgeable about wildlife and also kept me informed about local history along the way to the safari.
We spent a full day at the park (left Durban 6am and returned by 7ish in the evening) and had incredible closeups with white rhinos, African buffalos and elephants, even managed to spot a black rhino! With his experience and network with other safari guides he easily navigated his way around the park to locate the best spots for sightings. He knows the park really really well!
On the way back I wanted to get some souveniers and biltong and he stopped at places along the way.
I could not have asked for a better safari experience and introduction to SA. Thank you Paul! Would highly recommend Mzansi Safari Africa

Paul was an absolutely superb guide. His consideration and care for his customers was exceptional, right from pick-up at the airport and drop-off in suburban Durban, to dealing with all aspects of the practicalities of a safari.
We stayed for two nights at Hilltop camp in a family chalet (breakfasts and suppers included), and found the facilities very welcoming. Watch out for the cheeky gangs of Vervet monkeys, though! The food was very good (I recommend the excellent a la carte Kudu steak). The swimming pool was welcome between game drives, as were the small shop and veranda bar with wide views.
We saw three of the big five very quickly, but Paul's immense experience allowed us to get so much closer over the three days. We almost became a part of a small herd of elephants as they walked by us on a small road, and we sat and watched groups of buffalo and rhino from metres away. The big cats eluded us, but Paul's enthusiasm for all wildlife more than compensated. I started to keep a tally of bird species (50+ new to me on my first visit to SA), and Paul kept introducing us to the smaller, easily overlooked aspects of nature that I suspect most guides ignore. He managed to enthuse our jaded 12 year old twins about dung-beetles, and (glow-in-the-dark!) scorpions, but his trick for hunting wolf spiders was simply jaw-dropping!
I cannot recommend Mzansi (and Paul in particular) highly enough.
