I had found Coffeebeans Routes and more specifically the Jazz Safari on TripAdvisor. I contacted them to make arrangements and told them that since the evening includes dinner they need to know that we don't eat meat so vegetarian or fish is preferable. Not a problem was the

I don't remember exactly how I found out about Coffee Bean Routes, but I am definitely pleased I did. Like most people I had come to South Africa as a part of a safari trip. But I wanted to experience 'real life' too. I am a single traveler and always worry that a tour will be

This is advertised as a “Jazz Safari”, but there were precious few jazz sightings on it. Instead, it is essentially a field trip to the homes of two different local musicians who perform solo in their living rooms while you watch. One of them serves a home cooked meal and the

Dear Dennis, thank you for your review. I'm disappointed that you didn't get out of the experience what you hoped for. Certainly the basis is the two intimate home concerts, and conversations with the musicians. On your night, you had two South African jazz luminaries, from two different generations, both of whom can provide deep insights into the jazz scene. And I think that the website is very clear about this: "On this special music journey we are going to travel deep inside the jazz music of the city, by visiting local jazz musicians in their homes... The experience is intimate and deep, full of music and engagement and fun. It is a unique opportunity to meet local musicians away from club stages, and an excellent way to discover more about Cape Town and the lives of the people that live in it – through the music." It sounds like you were more interested in a jazz experience that took you to clubs in the city? Or someone to provide a lecture on the jazz scene, its history and current situation? We created this experience precisely because of a total lack of clubs, and our own desire to access great original jazz music. And the best way to to that was by visiting the musicians in their homes. The tour itself lasted about four hours in total Dennis, not 2.5, from the 19h00 at the starting point, to 23h00 or so for the drop off, it is a four hour programme, of which the part is transit between musicians homes, and part is the content itself. And a big part of what makes the fee what it is, is the fees payable to professional musicians. We certainly don't get things right all the time, and on your night we also had a situation where the first host had mixed up dates and wasn't ready. The situation was rectified and a good performance still took place, as per the guide's report that night. But had things started off flawlessly as the usually do, you might have ended up with a far more positive outlook on the experience. In response to your friend Guy's review, I offered him a free experience should he come back here, and I'd like to extend the same offer to you Dennis, with he hope that we give you a different experience. All the best. iain Harris

We took the "Jazz safari" in a group 7 strong; it was not as advertised. We were taken to the homes of 2 musicians, one a legitimate jazz player, the other a multi-instrumentalist music teacher and performer. There had clearly been inadequate communication ahead of time, since

Dear Guy, thank you for sharing your experience. Certainly the evening did not begin as it should have - the dinner host had mixed up his calendar entries and was not ready. That is very embarrassing for us, and indeed would have lead you to believe that the whole thing is amateurish. Happily, this poor start was short lived, and while Hilton got into performance mode, Tesna prepared the meal (you are right, the dinners served on our tours are the traditional home meals that our hosts eat regularly, which is exactly the point, guests get immersed in local traditions). Hilton is a South African jazz icon, with more than 40 albums to his name, and as you say, "legitimate". The second host, Mark Fransman, is a generation or two younger, and a multiple award winning jazz musician and producer, with some five albums to his name. Both musicians are professionals at the top of their game. I believe guy, that had the experience started as it was supposed to, as it does 99% of the time, your perception would have been very different. And I'm disappointed that we did not deliver to your expectations. If you return, please do reach out so that we can offer you an opportunity to do this one, or another of our experiences, at our cost. Thank you Guy Iain Harris

In a word, Excellent! At first I was disappointed to be the only guest but it became a unique experience to have deeper conversation with the musicians about the S. African (and world) jazz scene and to get to know them as people as well as artists. My guide, Adiola (sp?) was
