I absolutely loved this tour! My guide was Lutho, he was really knowledgeable and generous with his time. He taught me a lot about the local customs and culture, he even taught me some Xhosa. The area is really interesting, it’s a great way to see how people live in Cape Town and work together as a community. We visited a local kindergarten, a shop, the library and had an incredible lunch. If you’re in Cape Town this is a must do experience!
I was on my own and felt completely safe!

Dear Cassiejm2014, Thank you so much for taking the time to review your AWOL Tours Cape Town cultural township tour. We are so pleased that we could contribute meaningfully to your holiday and that you enjoyed the company of your guide Lutho, who is a local resident of Masiphumelele township. Yes, we agree lunch with Nonni is always a highlight of this tour. Guests might have reservations about visiting an informal settlement and awkward at viewing people’s obvious poverty; however, the local residents in Townships welcome you and encourage tours to take place in their communities, as it is one way in which they have an opportunity to get involved in the Tourism sector. The tours are operated on a non-profit basis and a fee goes directly to the people we visit and who make this tour possible. The AWOL tourism project in Masiphumelele has generated significant, sustainable benefits and has proven to provide real, lasting benefits for the local people. The residents of Masiphumelele has so much to offer and we look forward to sharing the experience with many more guests to Cape Town. Kind regards, Helen AWOL Tours. Thank you again for giving AWOL Tours an opportunity to be the highlight of your holiday.

UNFORGETTABLE! The Top of Our List of Memories to Take Home!
Jan 2020
The idea of "Township" comes into view on this bike tour in a way that *nothing* else could offer. Note: "Bike tour" in this case is best understood as a riding-stroll through the neighborhood more than a "biking" experience, which I note only to encourage novice riders to jump on board.

The tour is only as good as the guide, of course, and in this case, William is both a remarkable host as well as ambassador of hospitality. We could not have asked for better. Our bikes were readied and water made available throughout the trip. Every question is answered, and there is plenty of opportunity to meet and make new friends.

Lunch with Nonnie is a highlight of the trip. Nonnie is the guiding heart of the township tour, the "Mother" spirit that both welcomes and encourages a sense of entrepreneurship built on collaboration and individual empowerment. Her strength and determination define and anchor the tour overall. All this not to mention that the authentic African meal is a real treat!

Each rider will find their own niche for satisfaction - mine was the library and the great new friends I met there, but others will "connect" with the preschoolers (the participatory visit is a wonder part of the trip), the tailoring business, the public meeting halls, or the traditional healer. There is a sense of community offered at every turn, a sense of "welcome" genuinely extended, and the 2-3 hour event passes as though only an hour.

Note: Take a few extra Rands for small purchases in the gift shop, and of course, don't forget to tip your tour guide.

Loved getting to see Masi by bike with our excellent guide William. He had so much knowledge, was super kind and was helpful above and beyond. My little one (3yo) went on a bikeseat on the back of my bike, was super fun. Delicious meal at a local lady's house, and loads of interesting things to see. Recommend this tour!

We explored Masiphumelele with William, who was the most knowledgeable and friendly guide. He took us to the library and a traditional healer. We had lunch at a local resident's house (great chakalaka!). The tour showed us the South Africa we would not have encountered if we only had sticked to the common tourist highlights in Cape Town. It is a great way to contribute to the non-profit organisation Awol tours collaborates with.

Very intense experience
Oct 2018 • Family
We had quite an intense 4 hours in the township of Masiphumelele. Our tourguide was absolutely fantastic and professional answering all sort of questions and giving us all kinds of information in detail.
The tour was impressive on many levels and the best parts were a visit to the local kindergarden and a meal at a resindent's home.
If you want to book this tour and are ineterested in making a donation I recommend to send a short e-mail to ask what they might need. I really regretted not having asked first. At the time the kindergarden would have definitely needed some toys and probably other donations as well.
