Because of a mixup between the office staff and driver we waited an hour and a half before being picked up. Instead of extending the tour to make up for the lost time the tour was rushed and concluded after just over two hours when the tour was supposed to last between three and four hours. The information we received was informative but appeared scripted instead of authentic. Very disappointing.

With only 3 days in South Africa, we wanted to make the most of our trip by booking some tours. Holiday Inn provided us with the African eagle brochure and insured us that the tours were great.
That is the furthest thing from the case. Our tour guide NEVER showed up and after many excuses from the travel company a driver showed up and hour late, only to take us to a location where he claimed the group would be. We didn’t pay to meet up with the group after an hour that it had started. Save your time, money and frustration and don’t book with African Eagle.

An amazing time with an excellent guide; professional, informative, encouraged questions. Our first stop was the District 6 museum which explained the group areas act and how residents were forcibly moved out of their homes and relocated to a location. We walked through the township in a group of five, visited a crèche, a traditional healer and a shebeen. The emphasis was on acknowledging the past and looking to a positive future. Excellent.

This allowed us to really get inside what might otherwise be a superficial impression of something that might easily trouble you greatly. One has to admire here in Cape Province the efforts of the Democratic Alliance in building homes for the people at the bottom of the heap still suffering the ravages of apartheid; there is real hope here unlike in areas under the governance of the ANC where little effort is being made. On community sites there are dwellings ranging from shanty shacks through hostels (which were used to accommodate just men many miles from their families in the bad days of apartheid) to simple homes for the poorest (with solar heating!) to more expansive houses for higher earners (all things are relative) to really quite smart houses with decent cars outside. The remarkable thing was that these different stiles all exists side by side with no rankling or resentment, and that is because there is real hope for the people bettering themselves under the Democratic Alliance. Everyone of all races is pulling in the same direction. It is really inspiring to see. It shames the UK where there is discord everywhere, everyone is divided and things are going swiftly downhill as was South Africa under Jacob Zuma. We visited a pottery workshop, a workshop making really beautiful mosaics from coloured glasses, a primary school with so many happy toddlers who sang to us, did a walkabout through historic retained older township shops of the shack variety and a museum, dedicated to the riots which started the fall of the apartheid regime. As I say, all without resentment - a humbling experience.

We did the Township morning tour with Sia, a very knowledgeable and nice guide. He told us loads about history and the township conditions, including modern programmes on improving things. I really appreciated the fact that he had a microphone on while he talked so we could here him well over the traffic and he could concentrate on driving properly.

Sia, our tour guide, from the moment he picked us up (bang on time!) from our hotel to when we were dropped off provided educating, energetic and thoroughly interesting information with a real warmth and a sense of wanting to ensure we all learned from this trip. He, and our guide in the Townships, made sure we were safe and the walking tour parts were eye opening.
The highlight was perhaps the church service (we did the tour on a Sunday and attended part of the Methodist church service) but there were so many elements of this half day tour that we will take away with us. It could perhaps seem ghoulish or insensitive to go there, but it is really important to help with an understanding of what has happened here, historically and socially. You will find friendliness, knowledgeable and open people and you're bound to learn something.
What makes this so amazing is the personal stories of your guides, which will touch you, and their honest, open approach.

Never seems quite right looking in on the lives of others but this is so educational and the experience so thought provoking. I can't imagine going to Cape Town and ignoring the fact that these townships exist in abject poverty.
Max initially took us to the District 6 Museum which was a good starting point to get us in the right frame of thinking. He then took us to the township and handed us over to Ndota who lives in the township. He was brilliant and looked after our safety and explained all about life in the township. Really not to be missed.
