About
Look for South Africa’s “marine big five”—whales, great white sharks, African penguins, Cape fur seals, and dolphins—on a cruise around Dyer Island, complete with onboard biologist. The southern right whale season runs between June and December, but humpback and Bryde’s whales can sometimes be seen at other times. Your day includes hotel transfers, a warming snack on arrival and return, lifejackets, and wet weather gear.

I think I went with too higher expectations with this especially as the only reviews here are likely to be if you've had an amazing experience.

I went on the eco-tour where you search for the big marine 5 (whales, great whites, dolphins, African penguin and Cape fur seals). We saw amble cape fur seals on a little island made up of rocks and part of a shipwreck but other than that are sightings were extremely disappointing. In three hours in addition to the seals we saw the head of a lone African penguin pop up for a few seconds and we saw 2 southern white whales but when I say saw i mean literally a couple of split second parts of the whales backs where you couldn't see the size or distinguish the whale at all really and there was definitely no time for a photo! We also tried to spot a great white from one of the cage diving boats however we had to stay a certain distance as to not scare the shark off (as they'd been struggling all day with the sharks) which meant the waves covered any sighting we would of had.

It's important to note that the staff were excellent throughout, they were very informative and tried their absolute hardest to find us sightings but the animals were all camera shy unfortunately.

A few tips:

Go expecting to see nothing, remember how big the ocean is and appreciate that a sighting is not guaranteed I made this mistake due to reading too many reviews and forgetting people tend to only write reviews and share pictures for excellent sightings, Dwyer islands web site included.

The top deck is much better for sightings, they were able to see a bit of the whales tail and a dorsal fin of a great white as they did not have the wave coverage the lower deck did.

If you thing you'll get seasick take the relevant medication before hand. I made thie mistake of risking it without and felt sick for the entire three hours which made it even more frustrating that there was little sightings! Again the staff were very accomodating, Constantine checking everyone was ok on the boat and supplying me with ginger beer to calm my stomach afterwards!

Like I say best sightings will be top deck but remember you will really feel the waves rocking you about up there!

It was great to spend a day away from the city, didn’t realise the site was nearly 3 hours away but our driver picked and another visitor up from the city centre and we had a great scenic tour out to the site down the coast. We had coffee and fresh muffins while we had our briefing then it was out on the boat. The weather was fabulous but the water a little choppy (I would recommend a sea sickness tablet as a precaution) . With any wildlife expedition there is no guarantees with what you will see but we were very lucky to be there for whale season and got to travel alongside a southern right whale and her calf it was awesome. The seals were really playful too fun to watch. Even got the watch some shark cage diving . Then it was back to land for soup and bread before the lovely trip back. Would really recommend

Thanks so much for your comprehensive review. We are so happy you had a beautiful day with us, from the scenic drive to seeing a Southern Right whale with her calf, how special! Thanks for understanding that we are dealing with wildlife and sightings can not be guaranteed. Your choice makes a difference. Kind regards, Team DIC

Excellent day trip from Cape Town. Friendly, safe and punctual driver who also went out of his way to obtain information for one of our questions. It was a very scenic drive. We received a verbal safety briefing before boarding the boat. Sat on the upper deck and it was one hell of a ride, not good if you have poor balance or prone to seasickness. Having said that, the boat crew was excellent and always willing to help.

Thank you for your wonderful feedback. We have aluminium steel catamaran vessels, 14m in length and most comfortable in the industry. The ride can be exhilarating while exploring the Dyer Island ecosystem. Our reservation team will always advise taking seasickness tablets the day and morning prior to the tour, if prone to seasickness. Seasickness is a reality and it can happen to anyone. Our crew and volunteers are always ready to assist where necessary. Thank you for choosing Dyer Island Cruises, your choice makes a difference. Kind regards Team DIC

Wrap up warm and if you are prone to seasickness make sure you take some medication ( it’s rougher and colder than you think ) then prepare for an exhilarating hunt for the Marine Big Five.
It’s quite a long drive from Cape Town but the route is scenic .
After briefing over warm drinks and cake we donned our life jackets and waterproofs and boarded .
The staff were careful to seat everyone comfortably.
Don’t worry where you sit to begin with everyone can get a great view once the boat stops to see things
We had close up sightings of great white sharks by the cage diving boats .... but more excitingly swimming round the back of our boat.
This was just a prelude to an amazing whale encounter with six Southern Right Whales including two calves . At one point they were all around the boat and we didn’t know where to look first .We then went on to view seals and penguins . No dolphins today but that’s nature for you .
We returned to a bowl of hot soup which was perfect
The staff were knowledgeable and informative.
I have whale watched in other parts of the world and this was as good as it gets .
I would highly recommend this trip

What an unforgettable day! We were only out on the water for a few minutes when we started seeing baby whales breaching right in front of the boat as well as off on each side! During the cruise, we saw hundreds of seals, as well as a shark and a dolphin. A stop at the penguin sanctuary rounded out the Marine Big 5. Although Hermanus is about 75 miles from Cape Town, we were lucky to have Abdul as our very engaging driver. He kept the conversation lively and made the drive a lot of fun.

I have done several whale watching excursions across the globe, and Dyer Island Cruises is one of the best. Excellent staff, clean and comfortable boat, and an unmatched beautiful ocean. Even though I visited "out of whale season" when they can't *guarantee* whales, we still found three Bryde's whales in the bay feeding on schools of sardine. We also saw great white sharks near the cage diving boat, African penguins, an Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin named "Oom Warren", and a huge colony of Cape fur seals. The skipper, Pieter, explained that we had a Marine Big 5 trip since we had seen whales, dolphins, seals, penguins, and sharks. Not to mention several pelagic seabirds that the crew were happy to stop, point out, and give details in their incredible migrations. It is not every day you see an Arctic Skua in South Africa!

The crew are also a highlight to this trip, very friendly, knowledgable, and passionate about the ecosystem. They also explained that the company is actively involved in conservation, and clients had the option to buy artificial African penguin nests, which three people did! It is great to see a company give back to the ecosystem and makes you wonder why more companies do not.

Really incredible, and I can't wait to visit again.

Missed whales, great whites, and dolphins. Luckily we saw a Manta ray. Do boulder beach in January instead.

Dear Shay, The Dyer Island ecosystem and Shark Alley has been made famous in many nature documentaries. Marine wildlife watching is similar to going on any open game reserve where wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed, and every day is different. Your trip saw our endangered African Penguins, our beautiful Bronze Whaler sharks, and Cape Fur Seals – three of the Marine Big 5. Your trip also sighted a Short Tail stingray close up from the boat and some of our amazing pelagic seabirds. Dyer Island is home to an estimated 16 breeding pairs of seabirds including a very large Cape cormorant colony. Our traditional Southern right whale season is generally mid-June to mid-November, although they departed earlier in 2019. We are also lucky enough to see Humpback whales on migration (May to July and again December to February). Our Bryde’s whales are a little more elusive but we do try and find one if we can, out of the traditional whale season. Our seal colony is surely something to behold and at this time of the year is full to capacity with young pups and large males. We do hope you stopped in at our key conservation project, the African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary. Hopefully, you will join us again, as every day is an adventure on sea. Be assured that your choice makes a difference. Kind regards, Team MD

What an incredible experience with Marine Dynamics! The crew were knowledgeable, fun, immensely organised and exceptionally accommodating. The outing consisted of different procedures from checking-in, presentation, safety briefing, life-jacket fitting, boat ride (approximately 10-15 minutes) shark cage diving, with drinks and foods served, return and de-briefing. All proceedings of the day were carried out efficiently and smoothly without delay and remarkable communication from the crew. We had amazing shark sightings from the boat and especially when up-close and personal in the cage. It was eye-opening to experience how magnificent sharks are and we appreciated the efforts the team put in to teach us about the sharks so that the outing served as a holistic learning experience.

I would definitely recommend this experience to all, especially if you love to learn and seek adventure! Contact Marine Dynamics. The outing was impeccable and most importantly, their efforts are in favour of conservation.
