My family was displaced in the 1960s and Sam gave us a better understanding of what they went through and had to endure.

My husband and I booked this tour for the last full day we were in Cape Town. The guide picked us up and our hotel right on time to start the tour. He drove us around different areas, but then he dropped us off at a township called Langa. There, he arranged for a man in Langa to tour us around the area. This was really informative and a totally different side to see other than V&A/Sea Point/Camps Bay and the peninsula. I felt safe the entire time, and everyone we came in contact with was really friendly. The kids are also so cute! The tour was only about 2.5 hours in total, so if you have a free morning from like 9 am - 11:30 a.m., I would definitely recommend this!!!

We were so excited for this trip and it didn’t let us down. Coming from Ireland we had heard what the townships were like in South Africa but absolutely nothing can prepare you for what you see. Cape Town central has the beautiful exclusive waterfront, Ferrari car shops... yet only minutes outside the city, this tour brought us to what felt like a different world. For us, this is a must see for everyone. A local brought us around and it never felt unsafe. The people of the township were welcoming, the children in the preschool and their amazing energy was so uplifting and to see how the whole township community live is beyond fascinating. there’s some great stalls to purchase local handmade crafts so be sure to have some cash with you. We couldn’t recommend the experience more whilst visiting South Africa.

Sam's Cultural Tours accommodated our booking on really short notice. The tour through the township of Langa and meeting the people there first hand was an absolute eye opener to the other side of capetown beyond the waterfront areas - and in a positive way. Very open and friendly guides - a must do we believe and are very thankful for this experience!

This is the most memorable experience we’ve had in all of South Africa. Immerse yourself in the culture and traditions of the local people in a safe environment. The tour guides were knowledgable and answered all of our questions. Highly recommend for an authentic experience of South Africa.

This is better than the usual site seeing tours. We were able to witness the current township and learn the terrible history the people endured. Our guide always made us feel safe. I recommend to bring Rand$ to purchase small items to support the locals.

I went on the Township tour which I found quite wonderful. It was very sobering but such an important thing to see. If you just come to Cape Town to hang out on the Waterfront and Green Point, you are missing out on the experience of so many South Africans. To really appreciate a place, you have to be willing to experience the complicated facets of a place, not just the comfortable tourist attractions.

Sam arrived right on time and worked with me to book at the very last minute - just one day before the tour. Everything worked out great.

I think it is important to consider who is running the tour, and for a township tour it was really important to me that the people involved with managing the tour reflected the cultures actually present in the township. This is an opportunity to support economic empowerment for black South Africans, and I am glad that our guides were black, and some of whom were residents of the township we were visiting. I think that's really important to get a truer view of the community. I appreciated the walking tour, but noticed no one tipped the guide during that portion of the tour. Consider tipping - if you are traveling in Cape Town and can afford the tour, you should be able to budget a few extra Rand to show your gratitude for the expertise of a local guide. A relatively small tip from a European perspective is likely to be much more impactful for someone living in a township. Keep that in mind.

Sam was wonderful, as well. He drove safely and it was a comfortable ride hearing the information he was sharing as we moved around the city. The tour was mostly White Europeans, I think it would have been worth hearing more about how a lot of the poverty and inequality we were witnessing was a direct result of policies White people made - and the fact that White people still benefit from those policies today. It's a hard truth, but one that people need to hear - even if it makes them uncomfortable. I wish there was a little bit more in the tour that made White people think about what it means to be walking through a Black community - hugging poor black children does not improve their community or their lives, though it may make tourists feel good. I hope people will think of ways to make a more substantial contribution to a community that is willing to share its experience with us outsiders.

The tour was a bit pricey, but definitely worth it. I would recommend it to others, especially those interested in actually talking with people in the community, instead of just driving through as if from inside an aquarium.

I believed other reviewers when planning our family's trip to Cape Town when they said you really have to do this. It was important to me that our teen girls see there is much more to Cape Town than just fancy Camps Bay and the Waterfront.

Sam and his team has crafted this experience so well. A living history lesson that opens eyes, explains cultures, challenges, and choices in a way that doesn't exploit the folks living in the townships.

Rather, this is a way to give back. The tour guides are folks who live in the townships. There is a chance to shop and buy souvenirs. Many the same you can find all over Africa. If you want to leave your money behind, why not leave it in this area where it can have a better, positive impact.

After standing in a room in a hostel, in a tin shack where many families live together seeking a better life, I suspect it will be some time before I hear our girls complain a peep about their rooms here at home.

If you are looking for a way to really see many aspects of Cape Town and do it in a respectful way, Sam's Cultural Tours is the way to do it.

One other note--we did this tour in the morning and Robben Island in the afternoon. Made for a big, long day, but I'm glad we did it that way. Sam also saved the day when I found tickets for Robben Island were sold out the afternoon we wanted to go. He came up with tickets and delivered us right to the front of the ferry at the Waterfront after our tour.

Thank you, Sam!
