I have been on several whale watching excursions around the world only to be disappointed whale sightings. I struck gold at Hermanus as we saw Southern Right whales and a calf breaching. It was absolutely amazing. The guides were knowledgeable and knew right where to go to

Very professionally organized trip by Hermanus Whale Watching. Nice waiting area with free coffee where a drink and crisps are distributed before going to the vessel. The trip takes about 2.5 hours in - partly, and weather dependent - rough sea. Unfortunately we did not spot

When everyone in Hermanus knows that the whales have left, this company still pretends we might be able to spot some. Two hours fast driving at sea where we spotter a seal and some birds. A total tourist trap and good income for the boat owners. Try to check some reliable

Dear 505kajsas Hermanus is privileged to house the extremely credible Marine Mammal Research Whale Unit- a division of the University of Pretoria who undertake aerial surveys all along the Cape Whale Coast twice during the whale season. Quoting their October report “Considerably less (whales)than what we spotted on our first count flight in August, even though these numbers in August were also well below the expected number. It seems we are not only receiving lower numbers of whales along our shores in recent years (with the exception of last year), they are also clearly leaving earlier on their migration South" Although the whales were fewer this year, they still visited our shores to mate and to calf, albeit in fewer numbers and deeper in the ocean-not close to shore as is their natural behaviour from June to beginning December. No company has control over wildlife sightings and no control over the whales’ decision to leave, often turning out to be overnight. Our company pride ourselves adhering to strict marine tourism practices including no misleading advertising by inflating sightings on daily trips. After updating guests on the recent sightings at the pre-trip briefing, the choice is up to them to accompany us on a trip in our search for whales. We share yours and many a whale watching guest’s disappointment and invite you to return next season- the whales might just have returned in numbers as they did last season! Best Regards from the team.

We were here for 3 days, came to see the Whales however nature being what it is there weren’t any and asking around nobody had seen any for weeks. It also lashed it down so there wasn’t much to do. Wish we’d stayed in Cape Town. Hey ho......

Dear Utd1963 We would like to emphasise with your frustration of not seeing any whales close to the coastline- especially as this year Hermanus has been voted the best place in the world to watch these gentle giants from land However, they obviously preferred to stay in the deeper waters this season and as you wisely commented; “one cannot control nature” Even more disappointing to us is the fact that your experience, in contrast with the thousands of the annual visitors to this beautiful coast at the most southern tip in Africa, was not what you expected it to be. Saying this though, we do hope to welcome the whales back closer to shore- perhaps next whale season and that you might have another opportunity to see these annual Antarctic visitors you obviously care so much about. Warm regards from the whole Whale Watcher Team

Hello Jessicasmail, We are delighted that you had such a fantastic whale watching trip! During this bonding time the only think that matters to the mommy whale, is her baby! Phillip has a knack to make trips memorable sharing his stories and experience! Enjoy the priceless memories! Warm Regards from the whole team.
