- Stiofán M0 contributionsGreat Day OutWe really enjoyed the tour. Our guide Merahi was excellent. Very knowledgeable & engaging. The Moai are incredible but she really brought to life the history of Rapa Nui. Highly recommend.Written 24 May 2024

You are going all the way to one of the most iconic islands in the world. Don’t cheap out on a group tour. Hugo answered all our questionsabout the present and past of Rapa Nui, took care of a lot of the ticketing details, and went above and beyond to provide us with an fantastic experience. Can’t wait to come back. Cheers, Wyatt, Reyka, and KathyWritten 30 April 2024

- stevecU7337ZH0 contributionsKava Kava toursAmazing. Christina, our guide for our one personal tour, is brilliant! We listened as she told us of the Rapa Nui history. She helped us obtain the best photo angles and lighting. We enjoyed lunch at a cafe with a view of the quarry. This was the best historical tour I’ve ever experienced. 5 stars!Written 11 March 2024
- jamesbG7387DC0 contributionsSpectacular experience - must do on Easter IslandAmazing experience. Arrived well before dawn and the stars were spectacular. then as the dawn approached the moai slowly came into view. the sunrise silhouetting the moai is not to be missed.Written 26 February 2024
- Wanderoversea0 contributionsIn deep tour of Easter island with enormous knowledge from a Rapa Nui, a descendent of key historical figureOur tour guide Sebastian Paoa has enormous knowledge about this island, probably from his own heritage and also he was in charge of tourist business of Easter island before. He gave me many updated information of the history, the findings and current theory of moais on Easter island. He went above and beyond to show us the whole picture of East Island. In addition, I enjoy the intellectual conversation with him. I highly recommend him as a private tour guide to learn the history of Easter island.Written 8 February 2024
- 690robertw0 contributionsVery good experience in a day tourA remarkable experience in Rapa Nui (Easter Island) with Benjamin. Lots of beautiful places with Moai and heaps of explanations. We are really grateful for this tour, definitely recommend it and would prefer this tour in english to group tours in a mix of spanish and englishđź‘ŤWritten 9 January 2024
- kcQ9748UW0 contributionsInformative, well-paced island tour!Had a great and informative island tour with expert guide Cristina, whose personal ties to the island's history made the experience even more remarkable. She was able to answer all my questions, and paced the day's activities in a thoughtful manner. The entire day was well-organized, communication was clear from booking through trip completion, and the ride around the island was comfortable as well.Written 26 December 2023
- Krysthle P0 contributionsBest in town 11/10 starsSebastian was so knowledgeable and the best tour guide we have ever had (and we have travelled a lot). He is fluent in English and very professional. He took care of us like friends, and made sure we were always comfortable. He catered to our interests and adapted the tour as such. He also answered tons of questions. You can tell he is very passionate about the island history. He went above and beyond our expectations. We definitely recommend to book with Kava Kava tours. They are the best. In speaking with other tourists from our hotel who did not book with Kava Kava, they were disappointed with the tours as the guides were not as professional, patient and knowledgeable. You cannot go wrong with Kava Kava, great experience. Book with them. Thanks Seb!Written 20 December 2023
- C2475VFtonis0 contributionsFun and EducationalEducational and fulfilled all our expectations. Tour guide took many photos for us of us and answered all our questions about this mystical island.Written 19 December 2023
- Ben_Houghton780 contributionsIncredible 2 private tours with TokiSimply incredible. I had limited time and booked a full day highlights (including sunrise) and half day cave trek. Toki, my guide, was incredible. I felt like a friend was showing me the sights. In between the laughter he told me absolutely everything about Rapa Nui, asked me questions and answered everything I asked of him. The pickup was exactly on time, the pace of the tour was perfect and even though there was a private tour of just us two - it never felt forced or too much. Even on day two when I had a dehydration headache it felt like we were a couple of blokes exploring some caves talking about life. I learned so much and it wouldn't have been the same without Toki and kava kava tours.Written 20 November 2023
- shelleyc6220 contributionsAwesome Time on Easter Island! We did a 5 day/4 night tour of Easter Island. Every day was amazing. Our guide Hugo was incredibly knowledgeable and accommodating- a true pleasure to spend our time with and make this a memorable trip! Thank you as well to Ecochile who coordinated everything and in particular to Josefina who worked so hard to find our flights! Would highly, highly recommend!Written 2 November 2023
- 938claytonj0 contributionsLearned the history, saw the sites, and it was a blast!Hugo was the best. Showed us all the sites, gave us lots of time to look around and enjoy it, and he was super knowledgeable about the history of the island. If we were to come back again, we’d definitely book this tour once more, or at the very least stop in and have a drink with Hugo.Written 9 October 2023

Wow! What a fantastic time we had touring around Rapa Nui with our knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and talented tour guide, Sebastian. We loved every minute learning about the history of Rapa Nui and visiting the historical sites. As well, Sebastian is compassionate. Once Sebastian learned I have reduced mobility (arthritic knees) he lugged a camping chair around so that I could rest when needed, and he offered me his arm when I needed help safely navigating over rough terrain. We highly recommend Kava Kava Tours for its professionalism, knowledge and excellent client service.

My guide, Sebastian, did an outstanding job explaining the culture, history and anthropology of the island and of there Rapa Nui people. Rapa Nui himself, his passion for his people - on both a personal and a scholarly level - made every stop a fascinating window into the story of the island. I can't recommend KavaKava highly enough.

My family and I could not have asked for a better experience than the time that we spent on Rapa Nui with Hugo as our guide. We had planned for two nights on the island, and wanted to get the most out of our visit by booking this tour based on the time-aligned itinerary. What we hadn't planned for, and became very apparent early on in the tour, was the benefit of having an experienced local guide who brought to life the history of his ancestors.
Though visiting places like Ahu Akivi, Rano Raraku and Orongo inspire thoughts of how the Rapa Nui people lived centuries ago, experiencing the sites in planned isolation and with the insight of lived experience and oral histories, in addition to scholarly research, created an incredible vision of the landscape. Hugo expertly coordinated our itinerary to miss hordes of cruise ship passengers, enabling this relative isolation and privacy to get the most out of each site. Hugo has participated in some of the ancient and current traditions of the island - including descending the rock cliff associated with the annual identification of the Tangata Manu of the Birdman cult and tobogganing down Haka Pei - and as such speaks directly to what the Rapa Nui people might have felt long ago.
As is the case with current research, many questions remain on why Rapa Nui is the way it is, which adds to the mysticism of the landscape. Combined with the Rapa Nui people's expert stewardship of national park sites, each visit on the itinerary is awe inspiring. At each site, Hugo provides thorough facts and theories on what is visually observed, often commenting that the Rapa Nui people left clues on how or why they did things, such as the astronomical alignment of certain statues and the oral history that the statues 'walked' to where they were eventually placed on platforms.
The tour ended with a sunrise visit to Ahu Tongariki - where Hugo once again displayed expert planning skills by placing us in a spot separate from other groups to better capture the location of the sunrise against the 15 moai. With Venus shining bigger and brighter than the stars in the background, one once again wonders what the Rapa Nui people might have felt towards such an event long ago.
Thank you Hugo and Kava Kava Tours for such a wonderful three days - we highly recommend your services and hope to see you again sometime in the future to learn more about Rapa Nui.
