Guided Ascent of Carrauntoohil, Ireland's highest mountain: When you make an ascent with us you will not just be tagging along – we will share a wealth of historical, geological and natural history which these mountains have in abundance. We are very passionate about this area and it shows. Guests ages 16 and up can attend. It is worth mentioning before you proceed that any ascent of Ireland's highest mountain should only be undertaken if you feel you have the required level of fitness. You will be hiking over tough strenuous mountain terrain that does not have trails for at least 6 hours. The route is over 11 kmtrs long and within that there is 1000mtrs of ascent and decent! We have found that people have previously underestimated the climb so it is necessary to state this. Waterproof / windproof jacket and over trousers ( breathable fabric recommended but not essential ) Comfortable Clothing NO JEANS / DENIM Hiking Boots Fluid Packed Lunch Back Pack ( essential ) Spare Fleece / Warm Layer for the summit

      Mount Brandon hike
This was my second guided hike with Kerry Climbing. Piaras was a warm, fun, knowledgeable guide who kept us in great spirits! The pace of the hike was great, plenty of breaks, no views at the top but a fantastic experience and one I hope to do again!

      Howling Ridge Climb June 2024
Just completed a guided ascent of howling ridge on Carrantoohill with KerryClimbing.ie. It’s been on my bucket list for ages and it really did surpass all my expectations. It really is one of the best scramble/climbs in the Reeks. Weather was perfect- sunny skies and low wind. The rock was bone dry so it made for perfect climbing conditions. Our guide, Piaras, is a pure gent and his knowledge of climbing and the surrounding area is unsurpassed. We went up in a group of four and were out for about 6 hours. I would highly recommend this climb to all the thrill seekers out there who are looking for that something more. What a fantastic day out and one to remember for a long long time. Thank you KerryClimbing.ie.

Howling Ridge - Absolutely cracking day out on Howling ridge - Carrauntohil with Kerry Climbing and a massive thank-you to Piaras for making it happen! 👍💪, from start to finish Piaras was informative and structured in our approach to the climb, instilling a can-do attitude from the very beginning that was infectious! Pierce gave us a fantastic introduction to navigation and the tools needed to safely explore the mountains.
A very interesting and comprehensive course. The instructor gave us lots of very useful and relevant material and explained it thoroughly, following up then with practical applications that we could go ahead and use on our own hiking adventures in the future.

I recently completed the Mountain Proficiency Course with Kerry Climbing. It was well organised, professional and really informative. The navigation concepts were clearly explained and were easy to follow. As an added bonus, the course was conducted in a friendly enjoyable manner.

We did Carrauntoohil by the devil’s ladder and Piaras and Neil were fantastic. Both obviously very knowledgeable, skilled and safety-conscious, but they were also good craic and created a great atmosphere for our group. The great weather and views helped too! Can’t recommend Kerry Climbing highly enough.

Such a worthwhile experience with Piaras
We had an an amazing time doing the Mountain Skills Course 1 with Piaras from Kerry Climbing. As keen hikers, we were eager to learn how to navigate our way around the mountains. The balance of classroom time with putting the skills into practice out on the mountains was perfect. Piaras was a fountain of knowledge, not just about mountain skills, but the history, flora and fauna of the area. The whole weekend was really relaxed and a fantastic way of learning all the skills. We thoroughly enjoyed it and will definitely be back early next year for Mountain Skills 2.

I booked with Kerry Climbing as I was traveling alone and very thankful now I did. The weather wasn't great, very heavy rain and without a guide there was no way I could have attempted this climb alone, even though I've some climbing experience. Our guide Piaras was unbelievable and took us up through the Devil's Ladder which had become a waterfall due to weather and this experience alone was worth booking the guide. Piaras was knowledgeable, funny, informative and most importantly made us feel safe. He took us down a less travelled route The Heavenly Gates where views were spectacular. I would highly recommend Kerry Climbing to anyone thinking of climbing Carrauntoohil either alone or in a group
I will be booking to come back in September to complete the Coomloughra Horseshoe

Fantastic Richard and I am delighted that you enjoyed your day so much with Piaras and kerry Climbing. You are right, the mountains are so unpredictable and you just never know what's ahead on any given day. the assurance of a guide is certainly worth it! We look forward to seeing you for the Coomloughra...you'll love it!! All the Best Maureen and the Team at Kerry Climbing

After a failed attempt at climbing Carrauntoohil once before (without a guide) I was apprehensive about the climb ... until I met our guide Mike! He instantly calmed my nerves. Mike broke the climb down into 3 parts so you always felt like you were covering ground even when your calves might have been burning! He has so much knowledge about Carrauntoohil and the reeks in general. He climbed according to the fitness level of our group so nobody was left trailing behind. There was so much fog at the top that we couldn’t enjoy the views but we came down the zig zag route and got beautiful views of the lakes as the fog cleared - Something we wouldn’t have thought to do ourselves without a guide. The climb was so much more pleasant than I originally expected and most of all we felt very safe during the whole thing. I’d recommend using a guide for your first few climbs as they will take you on different routes - my friends and I will definitely return to catch those views At the top and we’ll definitely be asking for Mike :)

First time climber, would highly recommend using a guide. Peirce was able to share much information about the mountain and climbing in general which was very helpful. We got first hand experience of just how quickly and dramatically the weather can change and would quite literally have been lost without him. I hope to climb again soon and will be using a guide again for this reason. Kerry Climbing were diligent, professional and experienced and well worth the cost of the guide. Will be recommending to friends.

I had a Brilliant day on Howling Ridge with Piaras. It poured rain for the day and we couldn’t see much at all as the majority of the climb was in the clouds but I felt very safe every second of the climb Despite the ridiculous exposure. We had mighty craic and I learned a huge amount.

Piaras’s knowledge of Carrauntoohil is second to none, and when our climb was finished after 6-7 hours on the mountain he got a call to go back up with the Kerry Mountain Rescue team to tend to a woman in need, and off he went with a smile on his face.

Before the day I had climbed the mountain a couple of times up the devils ladder - unprepared and without much knowledge, and I’d say that even if you’re able to do that, you’ll have a MUCH better day with a guide and you’ll learn a huge amount more. Especially if you’re travelling to Kerry from afar.

I’d highly recommend booking with Kerry Climbing, from booking online to the climb itself, everything was 10000% professional and I plan on climbing with them Again in the future.

Thank you so much for your wonderful review and super well done on a mighty climb in not ideal conditions!! Though, I will add, the end of the day satisfaction makes it worth it regardless of the weather. Yes, Piaras really is amazing at his job and his knowledge of the whole area, his interest in history, geology and local folklore always adds to the enjoyment of the day. We look forward to welcoming you back here in the near future. Thanks again. All the Best Maureen and the Team at Kerry Climbing

We took the guided ascent of Carrauntoohil because the Irish weather can be so unreliable and mists can come down in a minute meaning you can lose your way easily unless you are a confident navigator. The day of our climb was hot and clear, so we were really lucky and could have done it ourselves, however our experience with Kerry Climbing was fantastic and I would recommend using their services all day long. Our guide was brilliant, showing us points of interest, finding a hidden mountain spring for us to refill bottles, encouraging us and ending the day by jumping into the lake in our clothes! It was a brilliant day and will be an enduring memory.

Hi Paula, Thank you for your wonderful review. You are right in what you say about the weather and it changes day to day. We had a super experience on this challenging hike last weekend- hips & calf muscles still recovering and we're planning out next outing with Kerry Climbing. From the outset responsiveness was very good, not to mention the really inviting social media footage. Everything on the day was so professional. Piaras (& Orla) guided us up the Devils Ladder at a good pace, so it was challenging but always felt very doable and safe. We got plentiful banter, information and education all day along with the wisdom of dodging the crowds and the better vantage points and also help with our selfies (always appreciated!). We're definitely coming back to have a go at the 3 peaks with Kerry Climbing.

Thank you for taking the time to post your feedback. I hope the muscles are continuing to improve :) :) Glad you find our social media engaging we love to share the stunning mountains we are so privileged to work in and the different conditions we find ourselves in daily too. It can be like a different world from one half of the day to the next! That is the beauty of the MacGillycuddys Reeks, no two days are the same. Piaras and Orlaith really enjoyed guiding you and passing on all the nuggets of information also, thanks again and we will be looking forward to hearing from you when that next plan is in place. Until then, take care. Catherine, Piaras & Orlaith.

An absolutely brilliant experience and one you’ll be recounting long after the day itself. A simple straightforward booking experience with plenty of information for both the first time or experienced walker, shared ever before you tie up your bootlaces, ensures you’ll be all set for an unforgettable day in the mountains. On the day itself, we were met at Cronin’s Yard by Piaras, our guide for the day at 9.30. Introductions made and a few guidelines on how to get the best for the day and we were off. Throughout the hike, plenty of stops for points of information and history of the whole area, really brings the day to life. Fantastic to make it to the summit and then dependant on the day/group/ energy levels there are a number of routes back down to base. My first (but won’t be my last) time to make the climb and I would have happily turned around at the end of the day and done it all over again. An excellent day out and experience made all the better in the company of the Kerry Climbing team who clearly love what they do and enjoy sharing that experience with those who join them for the day. My advice.. “don’t hesitate if you’re in the Killarney area and want an incredible day out” this has to be on your to-do list.

We had an amazing experience climbing Carrauntoohill. Our guide Pearse and his daughter Orla were brilliant, they both have great experience of the mountain range and knowledge of the history and geography of the surrounding area. On our hike the weather deteriorated after climbing the Devil's Ladder and there was heavy rain, wind and dense fog but our guides ensured everyone stayed safe. I would highly recommend doing to a guided hike with Kerry Climbing for anyone climbing Carrauntoohill.

On the 8th September myself and my friend joined Kerry Climbing on a group ascent up Carrauntoohil via the Devil's Ladder. Our guide's name was Mike, and he was fantastic! Full of interesting information, loads of fun, and he made us feel safe the whole way up. I would highly recommend doing a guided tour with these guys, especially if you are an inexperienced hiker - the route up is tricky if you don't know where you're going, and if it's cloudy you will get lost very easily. There are demanding parts of the climb where you use your hands to climb up slippy rocks, and I personally felt comfort in knowing that we had an experienced guide with us if an accident did happen (fortunately our whole group made it up and back with no casualties!). All in all it was an amazing day, incredibly rewarding, and I already plan on going back to do another guided tour with them, but on a more challenging route next time!
