What to expect
  • The Key West Aquarium is one of the oldest aquariums in Florida and one of the most popular attractions for people of all ages when visiting the area. It’s also home to the very creatures than can be found in the waters of Key West — sharks, turtles, stingrays, a wide variety of fish and much more. The aquarium is renowned for its interactivity. The popular Touch Tank is a way for guests to get up close with some of the more familiar creatures that can be found in Key West’s waters. Many of these marine animals — like conchs, sea stars, slate pencil sea urchins, serpent sea stars, sea cucumbers, giant hermit crabs and horseshoe crabs — can be seen when kayaking or snorkeling.  Hop on one of the four daily tours and watch (and participate in) a shark feeding, learning more about one of humankind’s most feared apex predators in the process. Then come face to face with a juvenile nurse shark and touch its tail. At the Atlantic Shores Exhibit, feed some of the larger animals while discussing the variety of marine life in the exhibit — tropical and game fish, sharks and sea turtles in a 50,000-gallon tank. Other aquarium exhibits feature alligators, stingrays, jellyfish and more.

This Aquarium is very small. For the amount they charge for adults and kids, we expected more. Granted, there was a shark exhibit, but the rest of the fish along the walls were scarce. Many only had a few fish in there. We honestly saw more fish at the local PetSmart and exotic fish store. We were very disappointed. Do not waste your money.

Very Disappointed - Both the website and the large poster advertised the Giant Isopod, so we bought tickets only to go in and find that the exhibit was closed. Additionally, they advertised other fish that we did not really see. Overall, the aquarium is well past its prime and even if the exhibit was open, it was definitely not worth the $20 Entrance fee.

This is the first time o have been to the Key West aquarium. I was excited to come. We have been to aquariums in other cities. This one was a huge let down.
The sharks were in a tank to small as were the turtles. I felt badly for the aquatic animals.
I will not be recommending the aquarium to anyone.

Even with being right by large bodies of water, this place is a tourist trap. It is terrible living conditions for the animals. Save your money and go to any pet store with fish for an equal experience.

We are sorry our aquarium did not meet your expectations. Please be assured our animals are well cared for and their health is our utmost priority. We would also like to share some background information about our Aquarium. We are privately operated and privately owned, unlike most aquariums in the United States. Our aquarium content is restricted to species of fish indigenous to the Florida Keys only. Because of our desire to keep our presentation confined to local specimens, we are faced with the prospect of doing all of our own collecting. We have staffed the aquarium with guides who give narrated tours of the entire facility on a scheduled basis as opposed to a ‘tour on your own’ type of facility. We feel that having well versed guides makes it more interesting to our guests and offers a more personal experience. We are constantly adding to and updating our exhibits, updating paint and décor where possible. However, we are a historic aquarium in a historic b kmiglionico@yahoo.comuilding, hosting live animals. The care and well-being of these animals takes precedent over any updates or modernizing that could endanger their lives. We offer a satisfaction guarantee located on the customer service page of our website.

Great history. Staff were kind and attentive to my kids. Tanks were clean and interesting. The interactive feedings were nice. Sea turtles were really cool. I have been to much larger aquariums and seen much less. Great place to get out of the heat. Was with family and Noone complained about the price. Felt the value provided was really high. Time your visit with feedings.

Don’t waste your money. First of all, they never asked to see your ticket, so some people just walked in off the street. The places is small, dark and dirty. Some tanks were empty, others had one or two fish, but you couldn’t tell because the light was burned out. Signs above the tank didn’t always tell you what was in there. They had one poor turtle with a box on his shell causing him to be tipped mostly on his side. It was pathetic. We spent about 10 minutes total in there because there was nothing to see.

We enjoyed our time here, although we do think it’s overpriced for what it is. It’s much smaller than expected and most of the fish and sharks you see are the same ones you see just looking in the water or while snorkeling. We were there for about 45 minutes. Lots of kids enjoyed a small touch pool, which was a great touch.
