The Medieval Torture Museum is the quintessential tourist trap. It is located in the middle of a heavily-trafficked street in a tourist town. It has nothing to do with St. Augustine. There are no artifacts here - it’s a collection of reproduction torture devices and ghoulish victim casts designed to attract the tourist bait rather than a museum with items someone might seek out. It’s pricey at $20, though admission includes the miniature masterpieces exhibit, too. That being said, it’s transparently a tourist trap attraction and delivers exactly what it promises - a lot of creepy torture imagery and an audio narrator who enjoys human suffering far too much. I only visited because it’s conveniently open late, so I wasn’t skipping something else to visit, and what are vacations for other than to spend your money on such frivolities?

We had visited on a prior trip, but this time we also viewed the Micro Masterpieces and listened to the audio tour. The Micro Masterpieces are mind-blowing! I wish there was information posted about the artists and the process, but enjoying the pieces was also good.
I highly recommend the audio tour! On our prior visit, we enjoyed the museum as the displays are top-notch and realistic. However, the audio tour elevates the experience. The ghastly narration coupled with the historical stories is purely terrifying!

I'm happy that you enjoyed our museum enough to come again! The Audio Guide does a good job adding an extra bit of history in the form of stories but not too much to make it boring. As for the Micro-Art Gallery it is a great way to help clear your mind after the disturbing museum. We do understand that we need some information about the artists. Though in the meantime your always welcome to ask our knowledgeable staff any questions you may have. I hope that we see you again!

Had a great time! The museum is definitely macabre but also historically accurate and educational. When touring through, it's highly suggested to use the audio guide. It provides interesting tidbits of information and gory details of the various methods and instruments of torture. The ambience is cool and creepy with flickering candlelight, quietly droning sounds and old style illustrations along the walls. The dungeon vibes were captured well. Some interactive displays are there too. The ghost hunting game is a free bonus used via app and there's the option of checking out some incredible miniature art that must be viewed through microscope, though that costs a little extra for admission. The staff was delightful. Highly recommend!

My husband and I expected this to be campy and stupid. Boy, were we wrong! We paid for the audio tour, and it was totally worth it. The audio tells a story for each torture device, and it's truly interesting. We saw people going through it without the audio tour, and they were laughing and moving through quickly. I highly recommend the audio. The young man who was working was very informative as well.

With only a day to explore some of the attractions in St. Augustine, we chose this because it was unusual. This place reminded me of a large haunted house! There are some great examples of old devices from the past that are creatively displayed to illustrate their effectiveness. Some parts seemed so real. We took the package which included the online audio tour, with each of the 42 displays explained and described. It certainly provided more entertainment than expected. The Micro Masterpieces gallery was very interesting, too. If you like haunted houses at Halloween time, you would love the Medieval Torture Museum!

Went with a group of friends and it was an entertaining experience. There were great audios to help guide the tour and some torture mechanisms that you could try. The only downside was that there were several people not wearing masks, so if you're concerned about exposure, I wouldn't recommend it. The micro masterpieces were neat and the details are incredible.

So glad you enjoyed the museum. Right now we do still recommend wearing masks but we do not enforce masks due to the mask law being lifted in our area. I'm sorry if that hindered your experience.

I recommend purchasing the audio guide. It made all the difference. If I would have gone without it, I would have been very disappointed in paying so much for the very short descriptions written next to each device. The audio guide on the other hand gives you a detailed description and historical stories. The audio guide will be on your phone so make sure to have charge on your phone. The employee will give you a website and password to access the audio. The Microart was interesting, but I wouldn't pay extra to see it. We had a good time and enjoyed this museum. Something different. I would recommend you check it out.

This is a kitchy fun place to visit in historical Saint Augustine. The setup is well done and you can tell the artists put thought into the mannequins appearance. I would not take small children through but as young adults we had a great time. The miniatures were my favorite part, it is pretty amazing that people can make art that tiny.

This museum is upstair on the second floor of a mini mall building. No public restroom. For the handicap whom can't take the stairs, someone must notify an employee to allow use of the private elevator. There is also a tiny art gallery museum one can pay extra to see exhibits under the microscope.
There are like 80 to 100 exhibits of torture equipment of methods or recreations. The curator spent a live time collecting this stuff and originally was in his home. Fascinating, interested, disgusting but definitely a guilty pleasure. Artifacts in many rooms along a long hallway on both sides. Comes with an audio guide on one cellular phone.
Definitely a must for those without a faint heart.
Buy tickets at the gift shop.
Many people have told me this is their favorite.
The neighborhood has eateries, take aways, shops, bars and street performers.

This tour was great! Very informative and a lot of information. Listening to the audio throughout the tour will make the tour excessively long. After listening to audio in one room, we chose to continue the museum by reading signs instead of the audio.
The miniature art at the end was very neat and well worth experiencing!
