Very enjoyable tour of Dunedin and surrounding area
A very enjoyable tour and overview of the area with Asta, our tour guide. We visited all of the places in the itinerary and some more besides. The highlights were the Botanic Gardens, the drives to and from the albatross centre and just talking with Asta who is just a natural at her job. This is an ideal tour if you need an introduction to the area or if you just want to take some great photos.

If you are limited with time, and don't want to drive!
I had very limited time and wanted to get an idea of Dunedin. Booking was easy: I reserved my spot several hours before the tour. I was lucky to be the only tourist on this tour. Asta, my guide was ready to tailor the experience for me, acting as my photographer since I was traveling solo. Thanks to her, I now have some great photos to memorize my experience. Asta took me to all the advertised places. our stops were short, but that's the point - just to familiarize myself with the city and to get an idea of where I want to return and spend more time. Thank you!

A Great Tour of Dunedin and the Otago peninsula
Asta was a superb tour guide. She was very knowledable of the history, scenery, and birds, The visit to the Royal Albatross Centre was very informative. She read the interests of our group and planned our tour to meet those needs. We would have loved to spend an extra day with Asta learning about the area, but our ship was leaving!

Fabulous tour of a beautiful town
This was our first stop off a NZ Cruise and imo also the best town and tour! Thank you Teresa for a well informed tour of your beautiful city and its surrounding. Teresa was fun and caring and had very good in depth knowledge of the area.

Great guide and region, but improvements are needed
Our tour guide was great, and it was a privilege to tour the beautiful Dunedin region. However the transport van was a rental, and terrible. Smelled deeply of smoke the whole day... Smallish windows blocked somewhat by mechanisms, and the audio system was poor. Had to crane my neck to see the sights and was sickened by the permeated cigarette smell. Provider should do better! Noticed that another tour group of theirs had a perfectly lovely touring van, but not our group. Also box lunches should be provided rather than stops at supermarket. And one lady in our group wanted to stop at the pharmacy so we got pretty delayed because of "stops" and we missed the beginning of our paid in advance albatross center tour. That was unfortunate for us. Guests should find their own way to the pharmacy, which is right in Port Chalmers. So there are some improvements that should be made by this tour provider. I thank you for a good guide and safe journey around Dunedin!

Our tour was beyond excellent. Steffan is a wealth of knowledge of this area, he knows the insights of all the beautiful locations, and this tour has great balance of history and modern understanding. Larnach Castle and Olveston house has amazing history, the train station stunning and the beautiful scenery is to die for highly recommend this tour.

Nice tour of Dunedin and peninsula and olveston
Tour was as described. Tour driver met us at cruise port and returned us there, so very easy transportation wise. Loved olveston house. While beautiful, the views from larnach castle were just okay, because vegetation obstructed what we could see from the garden. Only downside was comfort of the van.

Trii treated us so well! Flexible and accommodating!
Trii was delightful from beginning to end! She allowed us the choice of picnic or hot lunch and then shared her discount at her local grocery store and offered food recommendations! (Like Whittaker chocolate bars!) She also provided informative and interesting commentary, and was eager to answer questions and share her love of New Zealand. Toward the end, when we wanted to meet up with local friends, she flexed and dropped us off at the train station and returned a bit later, without reducing the quality of the tour for the other passengers. As for the Albatross experience, I had no idea how fascinating these birds are…now, I’m a fan! Thanks, Trii!

      Thumbs up in Dunedin
Packed a lot into six hours, yet was casual and flexible. We were off a cruise ship with an itinerary that ran into mid-afternoon so our guide pulled into a grocery store and we all grabbed lunch. Guide was a 20 year resident. Very knowledgeable. Don’t recall a question he couldn’t answer. Definitely recommend this excursion for anyone wanting an overall intro to Dunedin

Great private tour, payment issue from cruise ship
We are a group from USA and Taiwan that traveled via cruise to Dunedin. We arranged a private tour via emails with Asta while we were on the ship. She was very prompt in answering and working with us to make the excursion possible. There was some payment challenges which almost ruined the tour and I will get to that later. Keith was our guide and he was absolutely wonderful and a delight to be with. With his knowledge, time management and flexibility, we hit pretty much all major city highlights and points of interests including castle garden & its lunch cafe during a 5 hours span. Concerning payment, I would recommend Fantail Tours to have an alternate payment method in addition to just the “invoice page website”, because for two days we couldn’t figure out why the payment website shows as blank on mobile phones, iPad and laptops with our cruise ship Internet package. We almost cancelled the tour. Eventually we had to upgrade to premium Internet package to make the payment page showed up correctly. While ship was cruising, we can’t make voice calls and email was insecure to give credit card info. So this is one area for improvement.

Great visit to Dunedin and Otago Peninsula
Teresa was a fantastic guide on our excursion. Very personable, including a great sense of humor. The trip was well thought out, showing us many sites in and around Dunedin and Otaga Peninsula. She took great care of us, ensuring we all had food for lunch. She was very knowledgeable about the history, flora and fauna. Simply said, Teresa and tour were great.

We booked this tour from the cruise port and was so excited as all the reviews were fantastic…it was underwhelming to say the least. We made a couple of stops in town and wasn’t crazy impressed with any of them. The penguin tour was great the people there did an amazing job and they deserve 5 stars! This was a 7 hour tour and usually on such a long tour and for such a high price some sort of lunch would be provided…one was not. Instead we made a stop at a supermarket and told to go get a lunch ourselves. I feel that what we paid and what we did did not match in the slightest. A tour like this I’d likely pay $50 for not $220.

Thank you for your feedback. Sorry to hear you were disappointed by our tour. Lunch is not included in our tour price and the description of the tour states that. Our tour is tightly packed with sightseeing and there is not enough time to stop for a big lunch. Our tour guide either stops at a local bakery for a freshly made sandwich or for a quick snack at the Albatross center cafe to take away. The tour price includes an entry fee to Penguin Place ($58), covers a knowledgeable tour guide wages, GST, vehicle running costs etc. Great to hear you enjoyed the Penguin Place.

Tour guide is fantastic. Scenery amazing and places of interest are interesting. Vehicle is a mini-bus that fits all passengers comfortably. Great time spent and even though it is not cheap it is well worth it if you only have a day in Dunedin

The penguin Centre and the commentary were the highlights.
Time allocation was poor. You were unable to experience and fully appreciate major attractions. Especially Baldwin St and Dunedin railway. Also you need to select an appropriate location to purchase and enjoy lunch, rather than eating it on your lap on the bus.

Thank you for your feedback. It is valuable and an opportunity to improve the experience we offer to our visitors. Glad to hear you enjoyed the commentary of our knowledgeable tour guide and a visit at Penguin reserve. Our tours are designed to accommodate cruise ship passengers who have only a short day in the city and would like to see as much as they can. We will look into adjusting the itinerary to allow a little bit of time for lunch when we prepare for the next season.

With limited time in Dunedin (cruise ship) my husband and I would recommend this tour. Therese was our driver and guide for this very informative and thorough tour of Dunedin and it's environs. Her knowledge of the area was extensive and her passion was evident. The minivan we travelled in with Therese was a bit tight in the back seat for four adults. The countryside was picturesque and there were ample stops for photos. Therese kindly made a quick stop for us to grab some lunch to eat before our tour at the penguin reserve started. We really enjoyed visiting the penguin reserve and rehabilitation area. Saskia took us on a tour of the reserve which was a very scenic coastal location. We are glad we chose to spend our day sightseeing in Dunedin with Therese and Fantail Tours.

There were many great things about this tour - it was too late in the year to see the penguins in the wild, but we saw them in the rehabilitation center. The work they are doing there to help save this species (and others) is amazing. Also saw sea lions, seals, cool birds... The scenery on the trip was also quite beautiful. BUT: be sure you know where to meet the tour! Their website, and almost all the communication from them, said meet in town. We spent $70 getting to town only to find out we were supposed to meet by the cruise ship. There may have been one early email stating this, but I had no access to email on the ship, and in my planning only saw the later emails and the website. We missed the Botanic Garden. So, take the tour, but if arrive on a cruise ship, maybe don't go into town!

The tour covered a lot of ground. the highlight was the penguin reserve.

I only give this 3 stars because of the van. It was a cramped 13 passenger van with not much room between seats. We had a total of 12 passengers. If you got an interior seat, the views were mostly obscured.

The guide was very very nice, kind and knowledgeable. She told me much about New Zealand, Dunedin and about her country, all of which were very interesting.
Since I was only one participant of the tour, she changed the tour according to my hope, and I could watch some albatrosses and a blue penguin.
Although I am not good at listening to and speaking English, her English was easy to understand.
Thank you very much for the wonderful tour! I enjoyed a lot!!

Thank you, Yuka for your feedback. It was my pleasure to have you on our tour.
