Business owner, Víctor, has an extensive educational background in archaeology and anthropology plus a deep love for animals. Víctor gave us a really in-depth tour of Chacchoben Ruins as well as a history lesson on Mayan life and history. Mahahual Ecotours also does kayaking, scuba diving, snorkeling, and his favorite, birding. Víctor also has a nonprofit that assists with discovering creative ways to solve for human animal conflict with jaguars in the region called Proyecto AAk Mahahual A.C. - aprilrJ6964IJ0 contributionsHighly professional top-rated tour of the Mayan ruins!Victor is awesome! He took us to the Chachhcoben Mayan ruins outside of Mahahual. He picked us up from port, chatted about Mayan and local history during the car ride, and was a huge resource of information. Victor shared so much more than a typical tour guide. He knew about local history as well as ecological and animal life in depth. Victor is an avid conservationist with a keen knack for telling stories that move you. He even took us to lunch and sat with us as we dined in a local favorite for ceviche. I highly recommend Victor for a customized and top-rated tour!Written 1 April 2024
- moodymolly0 contributionsThe BEST TOURS of anything in this Region! Very Professional! We spent a VERY INFORMATIVE day with Victor Rosales. He is the most knowledgeable guide that I have ever met. He is a native of the Yucatán and very interested in the eco and economic wealth of this region. He is Mayan but speaks very good English. He is a historian in this area, he is a bird-watching maniac, and also understands the economic needs of the people that actually live here. We did a tour of the Bacalar Fort and also a boating tour on Bacalar Laguna. It was an amazing day! I would highly recommend this guide above all others! I now want to do a kayaking tour of Rio Wach with him. I think his nature skills are in the same category as his historian skills. Thanks so much Victor!Written 13 March 2024
- G1931AHwayned0 contributionsA day in Bacalar with the Best Guide! We did a tour with Victor to Bacalar of the Fort and a pontoon ride on the lagoon. Everything about the day was great and tailored to us. The knowledge and passion he has as a certified tour guide is phenomenal. We weren't aware that Bacalar was so full of history, dating back to the Mayans. I could go on and on about the information he shared of the Mayan people, Pirates, Spanish, and the importance of the lagoon, but it's best you go experience yourself. Victor is your guy (guide)!Written 13 March 2024
- santiagoh6560 contributionsPhenomenal birds, excellent guide , truly memorable experienceMy wife and I had a fantastic morning of birding with Victor last week and I give him my highest recommendation! He picked us up right outside the entry to Costa Maya Port and as soon as we introduced ourselves the birding began! Our first bird was hooded oriole and very soon thereafter two more orioles ( Altamira and black cowled ) , as well as masked tityra, and a black headed trogon , followed by a long look at gorgeous ferruginous pigmy owl. This was all in town on our way to the Victor is a true environmentalist, and he has multiple projects dedicated to protecting turtles as well as jaguars, and of course birds. We drove to the property of a local farmer whom Victor is working with in an effort to turn his farm into a birding destination ( ecotourism in progress) We saw amazingly diverse birds there including Golden fronted and lineated woodpeckers, yellow breasted chat, rufous peppershrike, white bellied emerald , squirrel cuckoo , red lored parrot , roadside hawk, barred antshrike (!), yellow throated euphonia, red throated ant tanager , and many others. We were then treated to a delicious lunch cooked from scratch by farmer’s wife.Written 5 February 2024
- jeanmA7143SX0 contributionsBest Guide Ever!Victor Rosales is a true gem of the Yucatan! He is kind, friendly, knowledgeable, and passionate about this beautiful place. We went kayaking in the mangroves. What a day that was! Victor took care of everything, making it a great experience for all of us - even those of us who were older and not quite as agile as we once were! His love of this area is contagious - he is a one-man ecological wonder! The lunch we shared with his fishermen friends was a highlight of the trip. He took wonderful photos for us to remember the day. All around a fabulous experience. I would highly recommend him as a guide and look forward to meeting up with him again. From 5 laughing falcons, to aracari I was able to get 22 lifers. Just a really special day. He made it a point to continually check on us to make sure we were comfortable through the tour in its entirety. Even had the chance to taste some tequila with the locals 😂😂. You could tell the pride Victor felt for his Mayan heritage. He showed us things that only someone from here would have or know. He took us to lunch in a secluded lagoon at buena vista restaurant it was an awesome experience. Could be the most beautiful place I have ever seen. Don’t wait til you get swarmed by the tourist taxi drivers reserve with Victor to get a one of a kind experience. Also Victor talked about his awesome work conserving turtle and Jaguar populations. We were in port at Costa Maya (Mahahual) for the day. We had contacted Victor Rosales in advance and arranged for an all-day birding tour with him. His emails were very informative and timely. He even sent us a little map of the cruise port indicating where we would meet him and there he was. He speaks fluent English so communication was excellent. We first walked around the partially built residential area near the cruise port. There were some colorful bird species in the trees and bushes. We then drove in his car to a little beach-side restaurant for a delicious lunch in Mahahual. After that, we drove inland and went to a ranch owned by some folks he knows and looked for more birds in more of a jungle environment. We did see some but it was just not a super day for birding since it had rained and that reduced the bird activity. We did see a Laughing Falcon on the way back to town. Victor is great at spotting birds, which I really need. He is a well-trained and educated guide and offers many different tours to small groups. There were only two of us so we received all his attention. We gained a lot of knowledge from spending the day with him and had a fun day. I would hire him again anytime.

My family of six booked a trip with Mahahual Ecotours to see the Chacchoben Mayan Ruins. We're traveling with another family of four that booked a Mayan Ruin tour through our Royal Caribbean cruise. Royal Caribbean canceled on the other family of four after dinner the night before our visit to Costa Maya. I emailed to see if I could add them to our tour very late the evening before we were in port. Victor was quick to respond, adjust the transportation plans, and accommodate our enlarged party.
The next day, Victor & Mahahual Ecotours continued to deliver 5-star service. The driver was great. Victor was one of the best guides I've ever had. Not only did he impress us with his knowledge of Mayan history, but he was also able to teach us about the local ecosystem and answer other questions regarding more recent Yucatán history. He also kept us laughing with many jokes. We were traveling with six children between the ages of 8 and 14, but he kept them engaged throughout the day.
I've been an amateur photographer for over 20 years and have taken many photo safari vacations. Victor shared some of his nature photos with me and I was impressed. I hope to be able to go on a photo safari with Victor in the near future.
Don't delay, book Mahahual Ecotours!

Great trip with Mahahual Ecotours. We docked in Costa Maya and were given great instructions on where to meet up with Leo (Victor was great keeping in touch and arranging everything). Beautiful coral and fish on the reef and a wonderful lunch after. My wife wanted to see turtles and Leo did everything in his power to find one for her and we were rewarded at the last minute. These guys love where they live and love what they do, they are very passionate about delivering a great and memorable time. Do not hesitate to book your adventure through Mahahual Ecotours, just let Victor know what you are interested in and he can most likely arrange a tour for you.

The very moment we got into Victor's car, the adventure began. Victor is a genuine nature lover, very knowledgeable and gentle. He was paying attention to the nature around us even on our way to the tour - he basically taught us to see things around us and we're still practicing it. We stopped a couple of times to take a picture of the moon, to listen to the birds, to watch the sunrise on the sea, or to see if the rattlesnake on the road was still alive (it wasn't, so Victor showed us its mouth, explained how it attacked, and offered me to touch it - that was a real experience for me because I'd never do it without him). The boat tour was much fun, we enjoyed the water views and watched the birds nesting on a little island. Victor also offered us some fruit to eat right in the middle of the mangrove forest which seemed to be the perfect place. My second favorite part of the tour (after the snake) was when we were recording a video together where I and my mom were trying to share our experience about the tour in Spanish :D (Donde la Unica connexion es la Naturaleza! I hope the spelling is correct). The whole experience was much fun and I can't recommend a better person for the eco-tours because Victor is really passionate about what he's doing and I think he's doing exactly what he's destined to do and what he's good at!

I coordinated with Victor Rosales from Mahahual EcoTours after finding reviews of his services here on Trip Advisor. He was fantastic! He picked us up outside of the port shops in the morning after we docked and we drove around the area, stopping at a few of his favorite locations, and seeing birds and lots of butterflies. The weather on our day was not great, it was windy and very cloudy, so we didn't see as many as we might have on a nicer day. Never can predict nature! My favorite bird of the day was the laughing falcon, but we also saw woodpeckers, black headed trogon, warblers, masked tityra, Yucatan Jay and brown jay, orioles, white-collared seed eater, Roadside hawk, Black headed trogon, even a wood rail crossing the road in front of us. When I'd had enough birding we went into town and had lunch at a restaurant on the beach - amazing fish tacos! Victor is a great guide, he is good at identifying the birds and keying in to what is around, and helping get me on the bird. He is also a FANTASTIC photographer and shared some of his favorite images with us while we ate lunch. I recommend him highly and if we were in the area again, I would definitely look him up for another tour.

Victor was my favorite part of my experience. We started before sunrise at one of the ruins and we got there so early we had the whole grounds to ourselves. He is so incredibly knowledgeable of birds and Mexican history. It is such a treat to explore The Yucatán with him. he’s worth every penny and I highly recommend him, Plus he has a bitchin camera and takes amazing photos that capture your true essence. Victor is more than a tour guide; he is a friend by the end of the day!

My wife and I spent a great morning with Victor. We did a combination bird watching and mangroves tour. It was fantastic and Victor's passion for the natural environment of the region was contagious. He clearly has a deep knowledge about local wildlife, a photographers eye and a desire to share it. We were amazed that with his bird calls he was able to coax a small owl into view amongst other spectacular birds. The boat ride into the mangroves was something we always had on our bucket list and it did not disappoint. As we are avid scuba divers I think the next visit to the area will have to include doing some diving with Victor. I would definitely recommend Mahahual Ecotours to any adventurous people visiting the area.

Group of four chose Victor based on good reviews. He and the driver waited us in the cruise port and we set out on a plan we defined (the ruins of Chacchoben, the lagoon in Bacalar, Cenote Azur, Mahahual Beach). All of the above is interesting and worth seeing, but the best part is the way that Victor realized the plan. He took us on the local restaurant and we tried local foood, he gave us interesting information about Maya civilization, he took pictures of us with his professional camera, showed us how to drink tequila and much, much more. We enjoyed a full day outing with Victor. Thank you Vic!

We just spent a great week at Mayan Beach Garden where Marsha recommended Victor and his tours. We booked 2 tours - Mayan ruins and a kayaking excursion in the mangrove swamps. Both were very fun and informative.
The Mayan tour wasn't the grandest of ruins but we were able to go before the park opened and we had the place to ourselves. Victor gave us a rich history of the Mayan people and the ruins we explored. After our tour, Victor took us to a small local place for breakfast.
We then took a morning and explored the mangrove swamp and paddled around Bird Island. Unfortunately, there were few birds there, migrations may be changing or it may have been too early. We still had a good time exploring & paddling. After the morning on the water, we returned to a wonderful lunch prepared for us by friends of Victor.
I would recommend Victor and his tours to anyone. His passion for birds & wildlife in the area are contagious and he's fully committed to the environment there. .

I had the opportunity to do a birdwatching tour with Mahahual in late October. I didn’t know much about it but I love birds and I only carry good attitude, blocker, water and insect repellent.
The adventure started early in the morning and we transported to a place that I thought was in the middle of nowhere but was happy about the greenery. As soon as we went downstairs and kept silent, we were surrounded by the most beautiful song of hundreds of birds I have ever heard. Songs that I had never heard assailed me and I could not but marvel at the experience.
Victor, our guide, provided us with binoculars, books and guides but Victor obviously knew the area like the back of his hand. I saw birds that in my life I had imagined seeing and experiencing this with the presence of Victor and the fortunes of the group that I had was an experience that I will never forget. I opened my app to identify birds to know what I heard but the surprise was that Victor heard a song in the middle of hundreds and identified it, saying scientific and common name in English and Spanish of the 57 different birds we saw, before the app! Then we went to find more birds and visit amazing pyramids, Victor knows a lot about history, culture and the impact they had and continue to have on communities. He is one of the best guides I have had the pleasure of meeting, he has knowledge and a great passion that involved the whole group. It was a perfect day!
If you are doubting what to do, do not just look for water activities, go with Mahahual, I am sure you will not regret it!!

My wife and I will be coming in on NCL ship on December 19, 2019, but our ship doesn't dock until noon. It leaves at 7pm. We are birders and realize the afternoon is not such a good time for bird watching. Do you have a tour that might help us see wildlife(and hopefully) birds within that time frame? We are seniors in pretty good health, but one of us can't do difficult hikes.

Victor at Mahahual Ecotours frequently does private and custom tours. You might try contacting him directly through his company’s website for a faster response. TripAdvisor won’t let me leave a link but if you look up Mahahual Ecotours you’ll find it easily. He’s the best around and is usually able to accommodate most schedules.
