Chachoban Mayan ruin and Seven Colors Lagoon tour
We got lucky and have Marcella driving us four around all day in her SUV. Marcella is super nice and pleasant. She is a good driver and her car is spotless. We spend an hour at Chachoban with Carlos as our tour guide. He is very knowledgeable about the Mayans. Then we drove to a hotel/restaurant by the seven colors lagoon. We are fed a good lunch and two drinks (soft drinks or beer). They had a few kayaks and swings on the lagoon. Lagoon is great to swim in. Next time maybe we will do a boat tour of the lagoon.

      Friendly, trustworthy
We were looking for a beach to go to at Puerto Costa Maya after disembark from cruise. We approached them and TBH was a bit worried about the trustworthiness. Our worry was unfound and soon at ease relaxin at the beach. Would recommend them, they are friendly and patient with our questions.

Review of Costa Maya Tucan Tours
Excellent service from Huitz our driver. We took a chance on a tour that didn't go through the cruise line and didn't regret it. He showed us the real Costa Maya. Thanks for adding to our memories ❤️

      Great, but skip the lunch
This tour was excellent and informative. Juan Carlos and his team did a wonderful job. The ruins were beautiful to see, and the history is astounding. We wish we would have had more time at the beach and lunch. If we ever did this trip again, we would probably skip the lunch included part and get our own meal.

      Great Experience
We really liked this excursion off our cruise. It was about 4 hours long but we got to see some rich Mayan history and our guide Francisco had so much passion for his history!

      Ruins
Carlos and Victor were very fun and kind. Driving was safe, and the tour of the ruins was small and a very good size. The beach was beautiful.

Wonderful day of History and Beach
We booked this tour thru Shoreexcusioneer.com. Toucan Tours was the local company they hooked us up with. We had a fabulous time!! They took great care of us and were very friendly, knowledgeable and got us back and forth to the ship with no issues at all. Our tour guides were great and the bus ride to the Myan Ruins was enjoyable. Loved that we stopped on the way back and were able to buy some fresh pineapple and mango to enjoy eating on the ride. Love helping to support the locals that way! The beach part of the tour was an added bonus and we really enjoyed our lunch and drinks there too. The service was very good!!! Definitley recommend this tour.

      Excellent Service!
We scheduled the Chacchoben Ruins, beach break and lunch tour. Carlos was an excellent guide and very knowledgeable and informative. When we got to the beach, our group of four was the only one who had scheduled the lunch. This would have left no time for us at the beach. Carlos arranged for us to get a taxi back to the port when we were done at the beach. We were very pleased that they gave us the tour we had planned for.

      Beautiful day!
Such an amazing experience! The ruins were beautiful and Carlos was very knowledgeable about the history. He was funny and entertaining! We had authentic empanadas on the way back to port and they were amazing! I wish we would have had more time on the beach but overall it was a great day! Thank you Ernesto and Carlos!

      NEVER AGAIN
NEVER booking with Toucan tours again. I was with my 3 younger kids. We went to the maya ruins and then the beach for lunch. They told us to meet back at the bus around 2:40pm. We showed up at 2:40 and the bus was no where to be found. I went back to the restaurant and they told me they left cause we were late. Let me also add at the Maya ruins we waited for several people who were over 15 minutes late. They offered me absolutely no help and told me I would have to catch a taxi to get back to my cruise ship.

      Family visit to Chacchoben
Our tour to Chacchoben (Mayan ruins) was pleasant. First, Juan Carlos our tour guide, was friendly, attentive, made sure we were comfortable the entire trip, and shared details about Mayan culture and history. His presentation made the ride feel short. He offered to take pictures of our group at the ruins and went out of his way to help when I could not find my cellphone. Having Juan Carlos as our guide made the trip excellent! Our driver, Reynaldo was also friendly and his driving was very good. Upon check-in the company (Toucan Tours) offered us drinks (water/soda and beer for adults) and offered plenty of cold water bottles in the van on the way to the ruins. Our family arrived via cruise ship. The only suggestion I have is that the company have a staff member closer to the port exit so that newcomers to Costa Maya know where to go to find the company office. I had to ask two individuals for directions since the address offered in booking details was not coming up via Google or Apple maps. Though once we arrived check-in was quick and staff were friendly.

Our tour guide, Carlos, was knowledgeable about the surrounding area and the Chacchoben Mayan Ruins. It was a short 10 minute walk to the Toucan Tours office/meeting point. After a 50 minute drive with 8 other people in a modern van, we arrived at the ruins. You had time for a bathroom break and then the tour began. Carlos provided a lot of information about the ruins and was always looking out for the group to make sure no one wandered too far. We were never rushed and were able to take our time and explore as needed

On the way back, we stopped at a roadside empanada food stand and had some fantastic chicken empanadas freshly made right in front of you for only $1 for each empanada. Carlos stated this is the best empanadas in the area and he was not wrong about that.

I would highly recommend this tour with Toucan Tours.

We found this tour online because we generally prefer to choose tours that are not affiliated with the cruise line. Booking was easy and safe, and when we were able to make full cash payment upon arrival.
The meeting place was not quite easy to find, but THEY found US as we were walking down the boulevard.
Water was offered upon arrival, the wait for our tour bus wasn't long, and the guide was hospitable, friendly, and well informed.
On the way to the ruins, we were able to stop at a roadside fruit stand and purchase the amazing Caribbean fruits that aren't available in the Midwest.
Our 18 y/o grandson was the one who requested a Mayan tour; otherwise, we may not have had this great experience. Our tour guide took a lot of time answering our curious grandson's questions, made sure the whole experience was safe (by alerting us to NOT stand under the tree where the monkey's might poo on us, and also making sure our climb up one of the temples was slow and steady.)
We were touring with another family of three (adults) who were Mexican, which is another reason to book a tour on the Costa Mayan economy. The excursion felt more like an immersion into the culture.
After the ruin tour, we opted out of the beach and chose to join our new friends in Costa Maya at a local restaurant. Again, something that can be done on a whim because the tour was so intimate. Loved this excursion. Not too long, not too short, and definitely personalized to our liking!

The excursion was pretty cool. Little time consuming but over all great experience. (If you want to visit local beaches I wouldn't recommend this excursion due to the time of excursion which leaves you with very little time to spend on a beach). Our tour guide Carlos taught us some pretty interesting Mayan history on our way to the ruins and showed us illustrations of the history he was teaching us about. The ruins were nice and we had plenty of time to take pictures. We even saw some spider monkeys in the trees! The van was spacious and air conditioning worked fine. Carlos stopped at a local restaurant so we can taste one of Costa Mayas native food Empanadas! Not only were they good but they were big! I did this excursion with a 1 yr old and 12 yr old and my husband. It gets hot so take sun block, caps, and maybe a ringed towel to cool off.

We, a group of six booked the toor several months before the cruise. When booking, it said that you must book a minimum of four, so as a group of six, we thought we’d be comfortable, especially since two members of our group had some physical limitations (we explained this upon arrival). Once we arrived and paid the balance (total of $600), they tried to put six of us in an old minivan. When we saw this, two members with limitations told them they could not go, as they could not physically get in and out of the old minivan. They said no problem, as they have large vans. While waiting, a woman (Carla) was running around yelling in Spanish. She didn’t realize that members of our group spoke Spanish and heard her telling the staff that “They are a problem”. A short time later a larger van showed up, but they allowed six others to board first, taking up the front of the van. So this left
Is again with a van that would not allow our handicapped group members to get in and out of the van. At this time we voiced our concern again with “Eva” who was a manager and just asked for our money back. She apologized and returned our money. We also told her about what Carla was telling and she told us that she was the General Manager, which was shocking to us. We then went back to the port and booked a taxi (ver large van) for the exact tour that we were taking with Toucan Tours, and at half the cost that Toucan was going to charge us. The driver we had was absolutely amazing and we had a great tour.

Let me start by saying I often submit reviews (this platform and others) and aim to be objective in them (pros and cons). It's rare that I have a "terrible" experience. This excursion didn't qualify as terrible but it definitely meets the definition of "poor". And not because of the Ruins. No, no...it rates poorly because of the tour company.

In summary, after being delayed 20 minutes departure on the van, we were taken to the wrong excursion. After being brought back to the field office, we had to wait to talk to a rep (Eva) because she was in a yelling match with the family of 10 whose excursion reservation was also screwed up. Once she got to us and I explained that we were taken to the wrong place she responded with "Well, it was just a mistake". Ok, fine...I get mistakes, they happen. But how long to get me where I was supposed to be an hour ago?? She goes off-script by responding to the spokesperson for the other family and the yelling match begins anew.

Finally, Eva tells me she's found a driver to take me to the ruins and that I should understand that "it's just a mistake". Several times she suggested I just take a refund and forego the entire excursion. "I can just give you your money back and you don't have to go anywhere today." When I declined, indicating the entire point of my day was to see the Ruins she responds with "No, you're not going anywhere I'll just refund you and you can go back to the dock."

She softened a bit, after once again, yelling at the other group. A driver showed up and we got situated in what turned out to be a rickety old Dodge that someone filled up with cigarette smoke prior to our departure. Upon arrival at the Ruins we were told we had less than an hour to explore. Our driver set off on a jog to find a guide to "show us around a bit". The Ruins guide was great...very friendly and gave us a bit of history before we had to rush out. Unfortunately, his original group suffered when he had to go back with us to sites they'd already been to. Sadly, we were rushed through the Ruins and didn't get to truly see/enjoy them. After an hour's drive back we were shuttled back to the dock unceremoniously.

All in all, the Ruins themselves are worth seeing from the little bit I got to see.

Toucan Tours on the other hand?? Save your time, money, and frustration. Too many other companies that you can do business with that will likely appreciate your business. Unless of course you're in the mood for ringside seats to a verbal boxing match with Eva in one corner.

Hi there, while we appreciate and respect each and every opinion there´s always two sides of the story. Indeed you were mistakenly took to the beach. Unfortunately upon your return to the main office we were having an issue with some very boisterous guests who in retailiation turned to you to make aweful comments to cause uproar. On our behalf you were approached and apologized for our mistake. We even pleaded to you not to heed their words and that we will still offer our services to you but you got carried away by whatever you were told and yourself got enraged and started to throw words; it was at that time that you were told you can get a refund if its your request. On the other hand your husband all calm and serene asked if it´d be long before you depart for your excursion to which you were responded within 5 minutes and so was it. It has always been our aim to render our guests with our utmost best but unfortunately we cannot please everybody. Thank you.

My husband and I had the best time on this excursion. Carlos was such a great tour guide. Very knowledgeable in the Mayan culture and extremely personable. Also for those concerned about speaking Spanish, his English is wonderful. After the tour we stopped at this little road side shop that sells fresh mango, pineapple and dragon fruit. We also stopped at another shop where Carlos bought spicy peanuts for us to try. All in all we had a wonderful time so i definitely recommend booking through Toucan Tours, you’ll save money and small crowd sizes as opposed through cruise line.

We visited Chacchoben Mayan Ruins with Toucan Tours. Gabriella, Eliseo (Chino), and Manuel were our guides. The tour liaison was right outside the port, and we waited approximately ten minutes at the Toucan Tours Office (very close to the port) until the rest of our group arrived. They offered drinks (water, beer, etc...) to everyone. The trip to the ruins was one hour long (two hour total travel time), and we rode in an air conditioned coach bus with cushion seats. The guides provided us information regarding the area during the trip, to include answering any questions about Mexico in general. The ruins were a lot of fun (for sightseeing), and well worth the cost of the trip. Temperature was pleasant (70's-80's) but still worked up a sweat walking around the jungle. The walking was moderate, and the stairs and any other elevations were very reasonable. An elderly couple traversed the tour just fine, but they seemed to be in excellent shape, regardless of their age. The guides stuck with us during the tour, and gave loads of background information that was helpful to understanding the ruins. The gift shop was cash only during our trip and the few items we saw were pricey. The guides offered the opportunity to visit the Mahahual Beach area after the bus ride back which is only ten minutes from the port. We did not do the beach, so we were dropped off at the port right after the visit to the ruins and one hour bus ride. Would recommend for a nice history lesson about the area in Mexico and Mayan Ruins. We had plenty of time to visit some of the shops back in port before having to board our ship.

What a great experience. I was nervous, because this was our first time doing an excursion from cruising not with our cruise line. But Toucan Tours did a fabulous job! From our port, we just followed signs to the port exit which weaved through the shops. Just outside the port, there was a representative there to greet us and drive us to where everyone else was! So we didn't have to walk to it like we were told we would have to when we received our confirmation email after booking. The van was air conditioned. Our guide and driver were phenomenal, but I cannot remember their names. Our guide spoke perfect English and during the 45 minute drive to the ruins, the discussed the culture, wildlife, foliage, and all sorts of relative fun facts. We even made a pit stop beside a graveyard to see the elaborate graves. The walking tour was way better than we expected. They provided bottles of cold water and there were restrooms at Chocchoben. We saw many temples are were able to climb up a little ways on each of them. We were taught about the strangler trees, the Chicklee trees that gum is/was made from, and saw many spider monkeys hanging out in the shade of the trees. Our group was small, only 8 people including us, so we got to ask a lot of questions and it was very personable. If you are nervous about booking a tour outside of your cruise line, Toucan Tours is the way to go. We ended up taking longer than expected touring, but were still able to make it back to the port about a hour or two before we needed to be there. Costa Maya was also our favorite port to explore, with the aviation walk through with tropical birds for just a few dollars, large pool, great restaurants and shops. I was also 5 months pregnant and felt very well taken care of. Bring comfy shoes! You'll want to walk around a lot.

To find Toucan tours, you ha e to make your way throigh the port shopping area to the outside taxi/tour parking area. Locate someone wearing the Toucan tours t-shirt and they'll get you into the correct van for your tour.
Our tour guide was Carlos and our driver was Felix. Carlos was very knowledgeable about the area and shared a lot of good information about the Mayan culture and explained how the ancient customs affect the current local customs.
The drive was about 45 minutes to get to the archeological site. Once there Carlos was adept at avoiding the other tours, so it felt like we had the place to our small group. The site is still being restored, so there are several areas that can't be accessed or photographed. But there are plenty that are accessible.
On the return trip, we stopped at Pineapple village and purchased fresh fruit from a local vendor. DELICIOUS. It was two to three dollars per bag of fruit that were easy to share.
Afterwards, we went to a restaurant and beach - side note, we wished we had ordered food, and had them serve us on the beach. Bring cash for a massage right on the beach: about one dollar per minute.
The port area here is amazing! You could spend a whole day there.

This was an interesting excursion and our tour guide was Mayan so we definitely learned a lot about the ancient culture. It was extremely crowded though and with our tour group of 20+ competing for space with all the other tour guides and trying to listen to everything was challenging. It was also extremely hot and humid and because you’re in the jungle, it’s also buggy - mosquitoes. Drink lots of water, consider a portable personal fan, and def spray bug spray on. This was not a great excursion for our 18 month old grandson who was bored and trying to climb and touch everything and run on uneven ground. A stroller is not practical to bring. We were very excited for the beach portion afterwards only to be very disappointed. Do not fall for having lunch at whatever restaurant they “drop” you. We were suckered into this and were stuck with no water view, extremely slow service (1 1/2 hours for tacos!). We had no time to go in the water, explore all the shops or anything else in the area. They forgot my shrimp tacos and they were marginal at best once I did get them. We were late getting on the bus.
