About
Uxmal is an ancient Maya city which you should visit during your stay in Yucatán. Declared a UNESCO Heritage Site in 1996, it is only 78 km from Mérida, about a one-hour drive south on Highway 261, past the town of Muna. Its name comes from "Oxmal" which is Maya for "three times built" or "what is yet to come".

Booked online one day before trip. Drove ourselves from Chuburna. Had purchased use of facilities at Uxmal Lodge, fees for entry into Uxmal, and fees associated with being National Heritage Site. Our intent was to avoid possibility of “hour long lines due to buses and tour groups “ as advertised. What a scam. Shame on you for “selling our purchase to a third party, Viator Tours! No lines, had to pay to park, $80.00 pesos, no cell service or WiFi to show prior purchases to ticket booth to non English speaking teller! Fourtunate through scouring around to find an “official entering to go to work” and spoke impeccable English, told us to drive back out of parking gate, the Uxmal Lodge was on right. Did so and the reception hut out front had our reservations per internet, but through the aforementioned company! He said we had free parking at the lodge, pool and changing facilities, and personally took us to ticket booth, got our tickets and personally took us to the entrance and turnstiles! We were unable to get our prior parking $ refunded and spent close to 2hrs sorting this cluster out! As for the ruins themselves, they are RUINED! Trash, walking paths non existent, signs for explanation in disrepair or not even on the pedestal designed for them, and nothing but “people buzzards” and some things made in China out front before you even enter the place. Don’t waste your time or $$$$! The Uxmal Lodge was fantastic. Book directly through them if these ruined Uxmal Ruins are your thing. Have seen several other smaller Myan sites throughout Mexico, Belize, and Guatemala. Far more interesting & care for the site! Adios!

We enjoyed this spectacular site. Not too many people. It has been sympathetically restored and is very impressive Atmospheric and not too commercialis3ed or over restored.
