An enjoyable evening
Dec 2020
We did the dinner and ghost tour package. The food was excellent and the dining setting was very ambient and the lovely service was super efficient, most likely because of the fact we were part of the tour package.
Please note that if the evening lends itself to wet weather, bring wet weather clothing and/or umbrellas, etc - as the tour is predominately all outdoors. Wear practical footwear and clothing for the outdoor weather.
Don't expect a spooky theatre event, you will however be treated with stories of apparent sightings and a historical journey learning of the Sites patrons. Some may be surprised that this Site was not purposely built to serve as a convict penal colony... I'll say no more..

Things that go bump in the night
Jan 2021
The fact that this site was originally a penal colony convict site and the. A mass murder happened here, makes it a pretty characteristic place for a ghost tour. Guide was great. I felt uneasy due to its history during the tour, perhaps even a little scared. I’m sure if there are ghosts anyway I’m Tasmania, they are here!

Ghosts ?
This is a great tour if you wish to view Port Arthur in a different view. Our guide was very informative on the stories which have occurred to visitors and in convict times. The reverends house does bring the most scary feeling with great stories.
Have the dinner before which is amazing and a 5 Star meal. If going in summer make sure you are on a late tour as it will be dark and it adds to the scene.

Fun and informative
Our tour guide struck just the right balance and we had a fun tour where we learned a lot about the history of the area and the people who loved there. The lanterns were a nice touch too. We have two teenagers and they very much enjoyed it. We did the 8:30 tour and it was barely dark by the time we were finishing. If you go in the summer and want to do the tour in the dark, remember daylight savings and go on the last possible tour.

Stories from a place beyond?
Oct 2020
Have done the Port Arthur Ghost Tour a number of times (this was the first time in 10 years) and continue to enjoy it every time. Our guide Ross was very entertaining and told the stories very well, including tales from personal experience. Had one teenager and one 10 year old on the tour and they both enjoyed it as well. Only disappointment was a couple of the areas couldn't be accessed due to COVID19. The light was on at the parsonage so had to wait for that to go out before our guide would let us enter! Whether you're a skeptic, believer or somewhere in-between, the tour will certainly make you wonder...

A great way to visit this historic site
Feb 2020
Though we didn't meet any ghosts, our guide Ross was very informative and entertaining. There was no stunts but some very interesting stories about the site and who has been "seen" to walk the place. There is real history here and the stories about the convicts and the staff from the past is good to hear.
Pleased we met with Ross as he certainly seems to be the popular guide.

Great way to engage people to history
Feb 2020
went on the tour and while no "ghosts" showed up, it was a great opportunity to learn history through a medium that younger folks will enjoy Went with my 83 year old father who enjoyed it, but walking around in the dark might be for more spryly minded folks. As a 50 year old sceptic, found it excellent and even a bit scary ;)

Disappointed
The first thing our guide told us was she had been doing the tour for 5 years & hadn’t experienced any ghosts & that she didn’t believe in ghosts.
Better off visiting during the day, the boat trip to island of the dead was good.

Creepy even for a sceptic
First of all, our guide Ross was amazing. He tells the stories so well and is very entertaining. You can only hope you get him on your ghost tour! (also, book in advance esp in peak season as it can get busy)
We are not really believers of ghosts as we are quite practical and like to see actual evidence before jumping on board something. However, Ross' stories combined with the eeriness of walking around the sites at night definitely creeped me out. We saw and heard noises on this tour that made me think perhaps there is such a thing as an afterlife and that ghosts may be real. Either that, or some kids who weren't part of our tour group were being stupid and trying to scare us. Ross was quite convincing that this is not something the tour does, and reading the other reviews here I can see that it is true. One of the things we heard was very hard to explain (even blaming it on rogue kids was hard) - and coming from a very practical and science based person, this has left me with some doubts about my belief that there is no such thing as ghosts.

Ross went into tragic stories of some of the people, which you don't get on the day tour. And you get access to some of the areas which are locked during the day. In fact, I think to get the most out of Port Arthur, I would combine a ghost tour and a day ticket. The day ticket lasts for 2 days and includes a free walking tour (which goes for about 45 mins and talks more about the place in general and the history) and a free 20 min boat ride with someone giving you information as you sail around the isle of the dead (which leaves every 30 mins). There's food and drink on the boat.

There's also a golf buggy that can get you around the sites - but it seems to be more a flagging down service rather than a time table one. It was good when it was raining (note if it is raining, the various shops around the site sells $4.50 ponchos)

Anyway, I can recommend the ghost tour! There really was some weird happenings that night. I would like to know if Ross had the opportunity to properly check out that stall in the pew that night if he would - I was too freaked that night... but retrospectively, if I could, I would go back in time and ask if we could investigate the area thoroughly to see where those throat clearing sounds were coming from, as now I will be forever haunted by doubts of - was it a kid hiding in one of those stalls doing it - or was it a restless soul who has been unable to leave this earth and continue his travels into the next life?! We will never know.

Ps. Ross, if this happens again and you investigate it and find anything (or don't find anything?!) please email me!
