Shanghaied in Portland Walking Tour

This product is unavailable to book via TripAdvisor. Contact the supplier for availability.
We explore an era when Portland was the most dangerous seaport in the world - plus we explore the second largest collection of 19th Century Iron Front Buildings in North America.

In the 1890's both the British and German governments threatened to boycott the port due to the many sailors and non-sailors Shanghaied out of the city - all with the tacit approval of city and state of Oregon business and political leaders.

It seems everyone in the city participated in the crime, from the Mayor, the Chief of Police and the political boss of the city, Jonathon Bourne, to saloon owners, brothel madams and even judges in the courts of the city. Even Deputy U.S. Marshalls took part. It was a city organized to exploit and victimize sailors and anyone else caught up in the madness

Pass By: Old Town, Southwest Fourth Avenue and Burnside Street, Portland, OR 97209

From the old Tenderloin to Erickson's Saloon, 1895 Portland was filled with casinos, opium dens, bagnios, cribs, saloons, brothels and danger - especially if you were targeted by a crimp, a master Shanghaiier looking for one last sailor to make a crew. You'll experience the largest collection of iron front buildings outsider New York City - and a special, once in a lifetime photo experience at the end of the tour.

The guide, Jim Fisher, knows his stuff when it comes to the sin and corruption of Portland's past. For me, Portland's Old Town was the most interesting. I especially enjoyed seeing the cast iron building fronts of historic significance. But really, if you're into shanghaiing,
