About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Travelbudsz0 contributionsDef go local! We had the best two tours with Val. We did one focusing on the East and one in the West. Showed us places we never would have found or been able to drive on her own. Helped us avoid the crowds and gave great advice for places to visit on our own. I would book a tour on the first day you can and enjoy Val’s advice when touring by yourself. I would also recommend booking directly and he offers a discount for multi day tours.Written 7 October 2024
- Kirsten W0 contributionsChoose this, you won't regret itWhat a brilliant day out. We chose the wine tour but in reality it was more of an island tour with a couple of wine stops - and I mean that as a wholly positive thing because we got so much more than we bargained for. It was a real adventure, lots of off road driving (not extreme) in tropical areas, climbing really high into the mountains, stunning views, interesting short walks (no more than 10 mins), a great little lunch stop, a paddle near waterfalls on a black sand beach, and then a trip to a vineyard in the hills and a madeira hub in Churchill's favourite fishing town. Such a varied day and Valdemar was the perfect tour guide, though as he is Madeira born and bred it was more like he was our host. We learned a lot, but in a really engaging and entertaining way, his knowledge of history, wine, nature, and much more was brilliant. You will have the most fabulous day to remember, and we felt really reasonably priced tooWritten 3 October 2024
- davidrQ4907GH0 contributionsGreat winery and island tour!DO this at the beginning of your trip! It was truly an unforgettable experience that was worth every penny and more. Valdemar is a wonderful guide and showed us parts of the island we would have never made it to otherwise. We got to learn a lot of history and interesting information about Madeira besides the wine. The highlight of our trip- and he even gave us some recommendations for things to see outside of the tour. We have great memories to take home!Written 10 August 2024
- R9381OJfelixr0 contributionsAwesome trip with a real local guide to see places you've never seen before!Definitely the best way to explore Madeira and get awesome tips for the rest of your trip. We had an amazing first day on Madeira with Valdemar and his 4WD car - you'll definitely see places, you'd never see on your own. We got so many tips for our vacation, that it was worth every single euro and Valdemar is a really great guy!Written 7 May 2024
- Elisabeth B0 contributionsUnique and Beautiful ExperienceThis was the highlight of our visit to Madeira. Aside from the beautiful scenery, Val made the experience truly unique - he’s very knowledgeable about the history of the island, as well as nature and the diverse landscapes. We were able to take backroads away from the main tourist areas and see places that we likely would not have found on our own.Written 21 April 2024
- Tee-em2400 contributionsA great tour experience. We had researched various tour providers and Valdemar is consistently highly rated so we booked with him. We booked 2 days; one day on the west side and the next on the east side. We were not disappointed. Valdemar listens to what his guests say and tweaks the tours accordingly. If we wanted levadas but not difficult walks he gave us that. In all aspects his tour was incredible. He is extremely knowledgeable about Madeira and has a contagious enthusiasm for the island. On both days we had lunch in a little village in a hole in the wall with fantastic local food and wine at very reasonable prices. He took us to authentic poncho bars, and of course to the most fantastic scenery we have ever seen. His nimble 4x4 took us on a number of out of the way dirt roads most people will never see. We highly recommend using Valdemar.Written 17 April 2024
- alanaX8343AV0 contributionsDiscover the natural beauty of Madeira!I hired Val for 5 days of hiking across all of Madeira. With 5 days of warm sunny weather I had a fantastic time. Madeira is incredibly blessed with natural beauty and Val knows all of the best spots. Typically with an early start we would beat the crowds on the trails (and the trails can be crowded) and be returning when the busloads arrive. Then the rest of the day would be sightseeing and driving backroads and, yes, off-roading, where you can stand in the back and enjoy the incredible beauty in Madeira. Val is an incredible guide. He seems to know so much about the geological history of the island, political history of the island, flora and fauna, weather changes, life in paradise (aka Madeira), you name it. He can curate a tour to your interests and weave in the best spots in Madeira. 5 stars is not enough of an accolade for Val. He is an elite guide who loves Madeira and wants to share his knowledge and experience with you. I guarantee you will have a wonderful time with Val. You will have a cherished memory of being in Madeira. Book in advance for the time of your life with Val!Written 12 April 2024
- P7247ZJalexeys0 contributionsAmazing trip for the whole familyWinding roads through green hills of east Madeira, passing by small villages and farms. Stopping at a miradouro, taking in the breathtaking ocean views and exploring hidden levada trails. Beautiful scenery, variety of fruits and a lot of positivity from Valdemar. Highly recommended!Written 29 March 2024
- PassinThru220 contributionsExcellent Madeira tourWe really enjoyed this tour with Val! He is a great guy to spend a day exploring Madeira with. Nothing was rushed and we were taken to places that only a local would know how to find. Thanks for an awesome day Val, we are looking forward to what you have in store for the next adventure!Written 13 March 2024
- topsyt20160 contributionsA trip to rememberA wonderful day. We felt extremely happy with where we went, what we did and what we saw. It was a great trip. Highly recommended. - yiolay0 contributionsFantastic tour, very knowledgeable and great guy.Really great trip, Val was really attentive and personable. He’s got genuine and deep knowledge of the island and real pride in his country, which came across and was appreciated and refreshing to hear He makes you feel like he’s there for you. He did his homework on us and really tailored the tour, down to the freshest poncha. Worth noting this service wasn’t a one off and I was introduced by my son who went a few year back and also had a great experience with Val. Would definitely go again.Written 3 March 2024

- 249larissam0 contributionsBest way to see and experience beautiful Madeira! This tour was, hands down, the best decision we made during our time on Madeira. In addition to being a genuinely delightful person, our guide, Val, was incredibly knowledgeable - a veritable encyclopedia of Madeiran history, culture, flora, and fauna. We were able to see and experience so much more than we could have possibly managed on our own. We are grateful for such a wonderful and informative introduction to Madeira.Written 1 February 2024
- johndY7813KS0 contributionsExceptional guide, beautiful tourGreat trip. You can expect spectacular views all over Madeira, but what separates this experience from the rest is the exceptional knowledge of the head guide, Val. He is knowledgeable about every aspect of Madeiran culture, from food flora and fauna, to the politics and history of the island. If you are hoping to learn something, while also seeing the off-road parts of Madeira, book this trip.Written 30 January 2024
- 538veraf0 contributionsAbsolutely amazing tour!In 8 hours we got a lot of unforgettable impressions - we saw places which we never would come to otherwise, hidden gems of Madeira, astonishing views and we got tons of information about history, culture, traditions, food etc. Val, our guide, is a brilliant driver and fantastic person, he makes sure everyone is happy. If you only have time for one tour while here - choose any tour with Val, it's so worth it!Written 5 January 2024

Val picked us up from our hotel at 9am and took us on an amazing 8 hour experience that really did explore parts of Madeira that a coach tour, or even a minibus tour just couldn’t reach.
We had a rough idea of what we wanted to see, but mainly left it up to Val. As a local he was able to show us a different, less touristy aspect of the island. He also took us to some out of the way bars to try different snacks and drinks. We wanted a snack lunch, so Val introduced us to two incredible local tuna sandwich dishes.
We were taken along some bumpy tracks (you’ve been warned!), to the highest points, incredible views, delicious food and lots of fascinating info along the way. Highly recommended, thanks Val!

WOW. This was one of the best decisions we’ve made to do in Madeira. It was such a magical and unique tour and left us in awe. We only had one full day in Madeira and Val made sure to give us a little bit of everything in the more local areas of the island. The off-roading, the local food, the views, and the history he provided us was so unique and FUN!!! It was absolutely insane how much we saw. When we come back to Madeira, we will make sure to contact Val again. THANK YOU Go Local Madeira!!!

For me, discovering Val was a true blessing. Not only was I guided through all the fascinating history behind Madeira, we blended in with the locals and immersed in the culture and organic foods, away from the hustle and bustle and tourist attractions. Make sure you get to try the locally sourced produce, deliciously smooth rum, the most exquisite dark honey and freshly caught seafood.
I was lucky to be at one with nature like never before. Waterfalls, valleys and lush greenery stole my heart and Madeira is truly is a hidden gem in the middle of the Atlantic ocean, with breathtaking scenery in every possible direction. It’s consistent subtropical climate makes you question whether you’re in the valleys of the Caribbean, South America or even the steep landscapes of Bali. You cannot justify it’s beauty in photos alone - this picturesque island is one I would recommend you to discover in person.
There is no better way to see this island than to experience it with ‘Go Local Madeira’. I will keep visiting Madeira as there is so much more to see and I will continue to use Val’s luxury services. Val’s tours are perfectly personalised - he is extremely professional, makes you feel comfortable and is very easy to talk to in which we shared many memorable and insightful conversations.
Expect your senses to be opened and cleansed after this experience, I won’t mention specifics - let it be a surprise. Just wait til you reach the clouds and breath in that mountain freshness!

I booked this tour for my birthday while visiting Madeira with my wife and what a wonderful day it was.
It was like being showed around the town by a friend. Val’s knowledge and commentary during the tour kept us amazed and curious about everything in Madeira. Our tour was tailor made for us and he took us to see everything we wanted to see.
Definitely the BEST way to see Madeira and we didn’t see any other tour guides in any of the places Val took us. We went to places that only locals or very few people knows about it.
I can not recommend it enough. You wont regret it.

Val is an excellent guide and a true expert of the various experiences that Madeira has to offer.
We were picked up in a 4x4 and headed straight to the mountains on very steep local roads. He explained to us the different natural eco systems that Madeira has and what Madeira has done to preserve and secure the beauty of it.
When he took us to a local wine vineyard Val was often as or more knowledgeable than the employees. Val surprised us with his extensive knowledge of the wine production and the various methods applied to harvest the best out of the grapes and soil.
We were able to learn so much about the island, the culture and the history of Madeira during the trip - and have a great time while we were at it. Val tailored the tour to our wishes - and included a visit to the natural pools in Seixal and must-drink poncha experience.
He is a man who truly loves and knows his island like the back of his hand. He speaks excellent English and is also a skilled photographer ;)
All in all, 10 out of 10 would recommend!

My wife and myself have been on many tours over the years all over the world, but nothing compares to Val's tour. What a genuine enthusiastic family person who is a credit to Maderia, speaking about the island with such passion. From the pick up to drop off we visited places all the other tours couldn't match.
Hopefully we will return to this beautiful island and travel once again with Valdemar.
Thankyou

I booked this based on previous ratings and it is absolutely the right thing to do! Do yourselves a favor and book this now!! We loved our first day so much we booked a second day!
We went out with Valdemar on a rainier day and it did not disappoint one bit! He anticipated all the changes and knew exactly where to go. Valdemar’s local knowledge and expertise makes for such a fun, smooth, and incredibly day. We went to so many parishes and were blown away by the astounding views over and over again. The second day (yes, there was still so much more to experience) we went to completely different areas and tried new food and drinks. We learned so much from Valdemar from history of the island to the local food and drinks to activities for our other days to the restaurants to go to and those to stay away from. Valdemar has so much experience as a tour guide and has lived on Madeira for nearly all his life, so this is the most valuable and unforgettable experience you could ask for. The off-roading through the forest plus the amazing view points and the delicious food stops was the perfect combination!
I cannot say enough how fantastic these two days were with Valdemar, plus our appreciation for his suggestions and knowledge for when we weren’t still with him! Thank you, Valdemar!! And people coming to Madeira, get this on your itinerary!

Incredible day! I don't like surprises but I decided to trust Val with our day. My husband and I just wanted to get a sense of Madeira outside of Funchal . We learned so much -- the history, ecology, politics, and the agriculture of the island . A private tour meant we didn't have to accommodate the needs of other tourists. Go for it! You won't regret putting yourself in the hands of a consummate professional who knows the island so well and wants to share his knowledge with visitors .

We had an outstanding day with Valdemar. He is so very knowledgeable about his native island of Madeira. He took us to many areas of the island to see the views, the hills, the vineyards, the wine cellar, and to sample local fruits. His tour was way beyond our expectations! His vehicle can be open air, which it was for us, and allowed us to stand and view the countryside while he drove us around the island. We went high enough to have to wear our jackets because it was cold and there was snow in the roadside ditches. As we made our way back down, the air became warm enough that we didn't need our jackets any longer. We were in Madeira via a cruise and we always try to find private tours to spend our day because we always see much more than we would on a ship’s tour. There were two ships in port the day we were there and we did not see a single bus while we were with Valdemar because he took us places that those tours don’t go to. Of course we did the sled ride - it isn't a full tour of Madeira without it!! It was so much fun!
Book this tour with Valdemar. You will not be disappointed.

Our tour with Val was a bright spot in our entire trip to Portugal, not just Madeira. We started the day without any expectations, but he was able to very quickly discern what type of custom tour would be right for us. Our day was filled with great food, adventure, and conversation thanks to our wonderfully knowledgeable guide. I would recommend anyone who finds themselves in the vicinity of the island to take this tour.
