About
Cockburn's large aging warehouse is the most extensive in the entire historic center of Vila Nova de Gaia, housing 6,518 Port Hulls that age under its huge roof, being one of the only ones to have its own crew of coopers. Cockburn's Ports are carefully aged in oak casks and ferries and are accompanied by a team of tasters and oenologists until they reach their ideal maturity. The impressive scale of Cockburn's warehouse allows you to house a large amount of Aging Special Reserve, to develop its unique style and perfect balance, acquired by more time of aging in wood than any other Reserve Port.

    An excellent port lodge tour.
We were part of a public tour with an English-speaking guide. He was fun, engaging, knowledgeable, and a wealth of information about port wine and about Cockburn's. The tour was great, the tasting was excellent, and we were able to stay a while in the company museum afterwards. Cockburn's does it all, including making their own barrels, so this is the most complete port lodge experiene you can find.

Port and Chocolate Tour. Juliana was a fabulous tour guide, relaxed, friendly and very knowledgeable.
We enjoyed an interesting tour around Cockburns finishing with a chocolate/port tasting which we highly recommend as the different chocolates really complemented each port.

Excellent short tour and great value
Came here as we wanted a relatively short good value tour and this was highly rated. Booking wasn’t easy direct so we went through GetYourGuide guide. We selected a1.5 HR. Tawny tasting for £20. Great reception and guide. The tour es informative nd just long enough. We both learned a lot. We bought 2 bottles in the sho at the end… Fully recommend

Great Introduction To The World Of Port Wine
Took the 90 minute tour including a tasting. Our guide, Manuel was very engaging and extremely knowledgeable. We learned a great deal about port and the history of the Cockburn brand. We finished off with the tasting, three very different port wines, paired with an appropriate chocolate truffle. The wines and the chocolates were outstanding

    Good, but not great experience
I have a couple of Cockburn's older vintage ports, so when we were in Porto/Gaia, we decided to visit their caves. They're up on the hill a bit from the river. We had their "premium" tasting, but I wasn't wildly impressed with the wines. The facility seems pretty nice and maybe a tour might have improved things? All in all, though, unless you just love their ports, I think there are better experiences in Gaia.

Very interesting and superbly well delivered tour and tasting
Biggest 'caves' in Porto/Gaia. Only one still with its own working cooperage. Great historic traditional of both British and Portuguese origin. Hugely interesting and informative tour given by 'Michael'. Very engaging and at sensible pace. Never ever sounded as if just going through a script. Always prepared to tackle in questions and always showed excellent knowledge and understanding to answer them amply. Glad we chose Cockburn's over the many others available. Lovely to make the connection with what I had only previously taken from the supermarket shelves. Well done, Cockburn's, and well done "Michael" on all accounts.

    Splendid Tour
Good news, there are no restrictions on photography. Found the whole tour extremely interesting from start to finish. The host explained about the function of the different vats, The process of decanting from one to another and the reasons behind it. The coopers finish at 5pm so if you would like to watch them in action book you tour earlier. We were only able to see their workplace and hear about the dying skills! After the tour there were 3 glasses waiting to be tried complete with complimentary chocolate. No hard sell in the shop ant the end, in fact we decided to go back the next day to browse after making space in the car.

    Great tour with Francisco
Our tour guide was Francisco and he was absolutely fantastic. He was extremely knowledgeable and gave us all the information we needed and more. He was funny as well! My friend and I had a bunch of other questions at the end and he was extremely helpful by giving us all the answers we needed, recommendations, as well as advice and information. Truthful, funny, and knowledgeable! I highly recommend a tour at Cockburns and to ask for Francisco if you can!!

Enormous historic port lodge - with enthusiastic staff as guides.
Fascinating tour of this enormous historic port lodge. With over a million litres of port in store it is a sight to behold. The tour includes the chance to see the on site cooperage ( go in a morning if you want to see the men at work) . There is also a small museum telling the story of the brand. Tasting was relaxed and enjoyable. There is a good on site shop too (sadly we were travelling hand luggage only so could only purchase at the airport)

    Engaging and illuminating.
Excellent tour of the cellars and tasting. Our guide was engaging and knowledgeable, we learnt a great deal about not only the history but also how it’s made. The port tasting was generous and illuminating. Worth going along.

    Really worth a visit
We visited Cockburns in april -22. Very nice place indeed, with very good staff in nice establishment. We did some testing, and got to choose from a comprehensive list. We tried and bought some very nice 10 year old tawny port and great white wine. Really recommendable altogether, we will certainly visit again.

Excellent Port Wine tour and tasting in English
We visited as a couple and did the tour of the cellars in English. Our guide was amazing, she was really knowledgable and answered all our questions whilst also being engaging and friendly. We opted for a standard Port tasting and a premium tasting with chocolates to try a broader range of the ports as we shared 5 different drinks. We also added the traditional Portuguese picnic as we visited near lunchtime. The tasting is in a lovely dedicated room and we were talked through each of our samples and the chocolate pairings. All the ports were fantastic quality and having some guidance on what we were trying really helped up appreciate the experience. Throughout the experience we were able to take plenty of photos and see the huge warehouse where they age the port. We were really looked after by all the staff including helping with some selections in the shop. They offer a shipping service which was really useful as we only had carry on luggage with our airline, so had the option to still buy some bottles and have them shipped home.

We had a fantastic time at the Cockburn lodge. The building is beautiful and features a free museum for those interested in the company's long history, along with huge vats of wine in view while enjoying a tasting at the bar.

Centrally located in the heart of the W.O.W. complex, Cockburn's real source of charm is the people they have on staff. We were blown away by the warmth, friendliness, and knowledge each staff member showed us during our visit.

Francisco, in particular, completely devoted himself to ensuring we enjoyed our time at the lodge and educating us on the history of the Cockburn company. Francisco's customer service was stellar and our time with him was the highlight of our trip to Porto, hands-down. We left the lodge with a true feeling of connection to the brand, thanks to the terrific setting and incredible staff. We can't wait to return in the future!

What an incredible working piece of history, I am not a drinker and my husband is not a frequent wine drinker. Nevertheless we both really enjoyed the very informative tour, to see the craft of wooden casks, vats and barrels being kept alive is amazing. Also if you're unfamiliar with the processes involved with creating wine, let alone what makes port so different, it is a very interesting learning experience. My husband did the tasting with chocolate and was thoroughly chuffed, not usually drinking red wine at all actually came away buying a bottle of the 10 year tawney reserve, much to his surprise.

You'll definitely want to drink port wine during your trip to Porto, but if you also want to learn more about its history, you should go across the Douro River to the small city of Vila Nova de Gaia and visit the cellars of some of the famous port wine producers. We visited Cockburn's Port Wine Lodge. First, our brilliant guide Mikheil told us about the origins of port wine, then he took us on a tour of the cellar, and finally we tasted excellent port wine of different sorts and vintages. It was an unforgettable experience for us.

We almost missed our tour because we got lost in the winding hilly streets of Gaia, think we did not take the most direct route!!!! We were about 10 minutes late but they were gracious enough to let us join in. There was only 1 other couple and the Sara, the tour guide was more than welcoming. Sarah was a very informative guide who answered all our questions without hesitation. We learned all about Cockburn's history which was fascinating. We also got to see the coopers in action and some very old old bottles of port locked up behind a makeshift jail!

Our tasting was 1 White Port, 1 Ruby Port and 1 Tawny Port along with chocolate paired with each one. My favorite the White Port which we purchased to bring home.

An unexpected high point in our Porto holiday. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable - sadly to the point that we were correcting people and places in the coming days! Learnt so much about the history and current production of port. Only downside is that it is a 250m walk up quite a steep hill - but still HIGHLY recommended.

Although our tour was arranged by a friend back home who is a wine importer, I think it was the basic tour, although the wines and ports we tasted after wards I believe were customized for us.
The tour was top notch, very informative, very good tour guide, just long enough, fascinating (they have unopened bottles of port from 1861 and ports still aging in vats since the 1930's.)
Afterwards we went to their nice simple garden and had some snacks and drinks.
Highly recommended.

The wine cellar visit turned out great as the guided tour offered a great value for the money paid.

It was a fascinating experience for us to visit a wine cellar. The tour guide was knowledgeable and answered all the questions. When in Porto, visiting one of the wine cellars should be #1 on your list.

The complete review of my experience is present in my travel blog/website. I have included the package cost, what type of wine is included, how to reach the wine cellar by public transport etc

This was an exceptional experience, one where I was more than patient for the end-of-the-tour port tasting. Our guide, Leonor, only one year into the job, acted as if she knew the place inside and out. Every facet of the process, from wine picking to casking, was explained in articulate English. I was especially proud of the owners to single out the coopers in their video presentation. They are clearly a major part of the company's success. Ah, and then the tasting. Such a fine product. We will buy several bottles when we return to the U.S.

Extremely pleased with our visit to Cockburn’s caves! We had a private guide, Melani, who spoke perfect French, was very knowledgeable and friendly, and did not rush through the beautiful scenery inside the warehouses. The Port wine tasting was also very professional and was an amazing experience to have. During the whole visit, we definitely felt Melani and her colleagues were there for us, and we felt so taken care of! I definitely recommend to pay them a visit, it’s well worth the trip to Gaia!

Dear Victor, Many thanks for your input and feedback on trip advisor. We are very proud of our heritage as a family company and proud also of the work done at the Cockburn’s lodge in the museum and the tasting room where we aim to show visitors Cockburn’s contribution to the Douro Valley’s development and to Port’s worldwide prestige. Hope to receive you again and your family and friends in the near future. A special thanks from Melani. Best regards, The Cockburn's Team.

We had a lovely visit to the Cockburn's cellars and a wonderful tasting afterward. Our guide Franciso was very professional and gave lot's of interesting information. It is very nice to see where to repair and make the barrel's. They don't have this at all the port cellars.
The tasting was excellent. I recommend to take different tasting options if you are with more than one so you can taste even more port wines. The port tonic was also very tasty and something I never had before.
