About
Though several whale watching tours operate out of San Diego, only one cruise whisks passengers out to sea on an actual sailboat. Harness the power of the wind on this whale watching sail, where you board a replica 1851 ship for your cruise. Enjoy unobstructed views from the decks, get a smooth ride, and expect great views of the sea creatures you spot—since they're not scared by a motor.

      Had a great day
We were in San Diego on vacation and one thing my husband really wanted to do was go whale watching. We went with Next Level and enjoyed a beautiful day on the water, saw a whale and learned about the local sea life and the boat. We would highly recommend and would go again if we were back in the area.

Great whale whatching even without seeing a whale.
The crew is great and we spent an amazing time with them. Also excellent with dogs! We saw dolphins but had no luck with the whales. But simply the ride on this beautiful boat was worth the money. I think it is outstanding that they offered another free tour to us since we did not see a whale. This was not their fault, but they still offered another ride. Exellent!

Love going out to see the whales, dolphins, seal lions, and sun fish on a sailing ship. The crew were very helpful and knowledgeable.

Such a relaxed, friendly vibe on a beautiful sailboat. Thoroughly enjoyed the entire trip and saw several gray whales, a gazillion playful dolphins, harbor seals and sea lions. Great bang for your buck!

      Crew was great!
The captain said it was a 7 out of 10 as far as waves go. So, take Dramamine because many people got sea sick. No whales were spotted, but still a beautiful trip. Crew was kind and helpful with giving blankets and explaining things. Seats are just the wood and a bit unconfortable for sure. Great views and dress warm!

      Amazing
It’s on a fantastic old sailing boat. We saw one Whale just at the edge of the bay but no others as the waters were too choppy. That didn’t detract from the trip though - an excellent way to spend 3 hours.

Beautiful ship, awesome crew, plus a whale!
My wife, 9-year old and I had a great time on the America. The crew was very informative and helpful, aside from all of the cool info they provided about what we were seeing they did a great job taking care of anyone who was getting seasick. As a bonus, 3 dogs were aboard, which I know helped put my kid in a more relaxed state of mind :) Best of all, we saw a fin whale, it was brief but very exciting.

      Whales and more!
What a great day! We saw a grey whale and other local ocean critters - seals & sea lions. The crew was knowledgeable, friendly, and masters of the sea. We boarded on time, learned about the area, the sailboat, habitat and local wildlife. Would definitely recommend a trip on the America.

Best Day of Whale Watching with my Pup
I was most surprised to finally find a whale watching excursion that I could take my dog. Nashie and I had a great time and saw a huge pod of gray whales. The crew was great and since this was a sail boat, there was less noise so we were able to enjoy the tranquility of being on the ocean.

      Excellent day out!
I surprised my wife with this trip for our anniversary and it was a blast! We got sandwiches for lunch and brought on a few drinks, but they also have some great itijoks for sale onboard. We saw some beautiful whales and dolphins and very much enjoyed the day on the water! The ship itself is beautiful and the crew is very friendly and knowledgeable. I would definitely recommend this to anyone!

My wife and I were in SD for our anniversary. Knowing she lives the ocean and boats, I looked up whale watching tours. Since I love history, the tour on the replica of the America was a perfect fit for us. The crew was knowledgable with all aspects of the ocean and whales. They were also very accommodating to the needs of the passengers. We had one passenger who required a little extra attention and made a lot of comments and asked a lot of questions, but they handled his excessive interaction respectfully and in a manner that still allowed others to learn from the conversation.

The best part, was that we saw a Blue Whale! One of the more surreal experiences I’ve had with nature as this magnificent animal is not one that you can just go to a zoo or an aquarium to see. While on the ocean, we also saw pods of dolphins that may have totaled into the 1000’s. Sounds like most of the local operators work together to communicate where the whales are to ensure spotting at least one.

Overall, the experience was great. In addition to the crew being awesome, the ship held its own on the water and was a pretty smooth ride. When they say no Sea Sickness, they mean it. I would highly recommend to anyone who is interested in getting some sun, sea, and history while searching for whales.

The Next Level Sailing Whale Watching cruise on July 14, 2021 was truly one of the highlights of my life. In addition to the opportunity to sail on this beautiful, historic boat being taken care of by a wonderful, interesting, professional crew, our view of a huge, beautiful Blue Whale which swam right under the boat far exceeded my expectations. We were scheduled for a 4-hour cruise, but Captain Sears got reports of a whale being spotted a few miles off the beach of Del Mar and he very unselfishly extended the cruise 2 1/2 hours to go spot that whale. Is was a splendid experience! I highly recommend that all travelers to San Diego - and even all local residents - to schedule this fantastic attraction!

I don’t even know where to start! This small company and team offered the most amazing experience! Fathom was super sweet being available for any questions and taking care of us, Al (your semi famous movie star and tour guide) was extremely knowledgeable and attentive (make sure you also visit him at the maritime museum) and the captain and his crew made sure everyone is safe! They didn’t cancel the tour even the group going with us was smaller. We had poor weather but the captain still tried to take us out after a short delay. Unfortunately we did have to turn around because the turbulences were getting too rough. Good call! Weather changed in seconds! They give a whale guarantee so we are welcome for free for a future trip, but to be honest we will just get another set of ticket to be able to support this amazing small business and also tip well they more than deserve it! This was such an awesome morning and most of it was the the customer service we received! See you soon!

Boat was perfect, size was perfect, length was perfect. Al was like a bad wedding DJ- loud nonstop obnoxious bragging and jokes for the whole 4 hours and seemed annoyed if everyone wasn’t paying attention to him. He had great info about the animals and the area- other than that we would have appreciated being allowed to enjoy the sailing peacefully. Also we came back to spend the last hour in the bay watching a military boat- wished we had spent it looking for more whales. We saw lots of dolphins and it was a beautiful ride.

We went out whale watching with Next Level on a “misty” (really, it was raining but attitude is everything), windy, overcast day. Now, I need to back track. We chose to go out even tho Capt Troy called us to inform us of the forecast and the slight possibility it could need to be rescheduled. There were 15 brave souls. The water was rather choppy but the sailboat mostly slid over the swells. They kept a careful eye out for anyone feeling seasick. While one girl did fall to the misfortune they were extremely attentive to her and took amazing care. We did see a a couple of whales, unfortunately they were very elusive on this day but the crew did everything they could to continue locating the sea life. I’m the meantime we had Al to entertain us with jokes and educating us on the area, sea life, and anything and everything nautical (including his acting rolls in some nautical movies!). I would most definitely suggest them to anyone and everyone, I have already made referrals their way on other sightseeing tours that we have been on since our trip!

My experience with the next level sailing was incredible! From the moment you walk on the boat you feel like family. Extreme safety measures were in place. I didn’t come within 6 feet of one person the entire time I was on the boat. The captain and crew are very diligent about keeping everyone safe during this crazy time, while allowing your families to experience one of the most amazing sites that they will ever see in their entire lives! I honestly feel like my experience was better than it would’ve been if the boat has been at full capacity with 75 people. We had about 25 people in our group, which made the experience even more intimate!

Beautiful ship, excellent crew, sunny weather and accommodating marine life made for a memorable four hours on the water. The crew kept the passengers engaged, informed and entertained as we successfully scanned the horizon for whales -- with multiple sightings and close encounters. Highly recommend this trip.

I recommend buying your tickets thru the company website for the best prices. You get a 10% discount for booking on line. There are also good discounts for veterans and active duty members of the armed services.

What a fabulous trip! The ship and it's crew are all top notch. They kept us engaged and also gave us space to take in the sights of these majestic creatures. We knowingly went between migration times but we still had finback whales surrounding the boat. At the moment of the first spout, it felt like everyone on the boat was a 10 year old with eyes wide and smiles even wider.

I went with my 2 college age kids and they LOVED it! A permanent lifetime highlight.

And during the ride out and the sail back in we also got a great tour of the San Diego shore and its history.

The boat: A stunning replica of the original America’s Cup winner of 150 years ago. The length mitigates the effect of rough seas. I would have gladly paid the price to just sail around for 4 hours independent of the whale watching.

The crew: Fathom, our maitre de bateau and guide was incomparable. She delivered a fantastic running narrative interspersed with operational guidance that the guests would have done well to heed. Her crew mates were just fun to be around and the captain not only found and followed the whales but regaled us with many tales of a life well lived.

The whales: the captain latched on to 6 and maneuvered to get all the guests great views. I brought a long lens and got several dozen good shots, but missed the two I would have appreciated the most.

Guests: my wife and I enjoyed their company, but Fathom made clear that the whales can appear on either side and therefore asked that the guests on the whale side to sit low and avoid blocking the view of those on the opposite side. If the 6 guests who sat on the boxes at the the guard rail had heeded the instructions then the 10 of us looking over them would have had a good view of the magnificent tail wave by two of whales. Fortunately the guests who did capture it graciously shared their photos and videos

Here's what you need to know-

This boat has about 60+ people on it. It's crowded. Many people brought kids and while I like kids and have them as well, this was not the environment for them. There was some danger of them going over in certain areas without rails and additionally, they were constantly up and down to the bathroom. Which is the other thing you need to know, there is one head and it seems like the entire boat is always in line for the thing. The operators are nice but seem to spend a lot of time on bathroom line management duty. The other thing you need to know is this was not under sail only the motor, I saw other reviews stating the same. There is nowhere to hide from the sun for a moment as down below is restricted for the bathroom. People do get sick as you see the crew running about with blue buckets.
The other issue is that during the 4.5 hours we were not offered a drink, I think this is because they don't want that bathroom line getting bigger. So the wind up here is- yes this is a low cost, if you'd rather pay more for a trip with less than 20 ppl on it keep searching this is my fault for not realizing.

Did we see a whale ...um yeah for a second, one whale. But I'd rather of spent 4.5 hours another way in retrospect.

We take safety very seriously and because of that we have a perfect safety record and no one has gone overboard. Our trips have been full but for good reason as we have had an incredible year for blue whales: the largest animal on the planet. On this particular day, we were thirty minutes late in order to make sure our guests saw a whale. Usually we like to spend more time with whales, but this day, it was difficult to find this whale. They are wild animals, so sometimes they are more friendly than others. We appreciate your feedback for the restroom. We do have more than one restroom on the boat, so we will utilize it more frequently. You can help yourself to water and soda throughout the voyage, I'm sorry if you weren't aware of the complimentary drinks. Again, thank you for your feedback. We appreciate it.
