About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Caronppr0 contributionsGreat for learning NYC subway historySubway tour offered great historical perspective about why NYC subway lines are the way they are today and why the decor and stations are as they are today. That part was awesome! I thought we might visit some closed to public areas which was disappointing because we didn't. Overall, great tour for the time and money just understand it is a history of the subway and you won't visit places you couldn't visit on your own.Written 7 October 2024
- newyorker7200 contributionsGreat journey back in time to Dutch New AmsterdamThis walking tour was fun and so informative. Our guide, Justin, shared a wealth of information through stories, explanations of what we were seeing and of what had been there before. This all made the history come alive. This was a unique and rewarding way to spend a couple of hours. Highly recommend for tourists or New Yorkers.Written 6 October 2024
- kevinu7860 contributionsGuilded Age comes aliveRichard was a wonderful guide who brought the Guilded Age alive for us. As residents of the city for over a decade it was wonderful to learn so much new information about this part of the city. He checked in with guests throughout the tour and answered our questions with great detail. Highly recommend!!!Written 5 October 2024
- juttaf4650 contributionsLovely stroll into the Gilded Age of NYCGreat tour highlighting buildings on and just off 5th Avenue starting at Grand Army Plaza and ending at the Metropolitan Museum. Learned about buildings no longer there and looked at buildings still there. Interesting stories and tidbits and visited a few secret spots!Written 5 October 2024
- dearanij0 contributionsGreat tour of the old Worlds FairOur guide was very knowledgeable about the area and shared many fun facts. Even on a rainy day, it was a very enjoyable dayWritten 4 October 2024
- kareneH4556AJ0 contributionsPure GoldI found this tour fascinating. Richard, the tour guide, was extremely knowledgeable and conveyed it in a direct, easy to understand manner, adding charming anecdotal tidbits along the way. One gets a whole new way of looking at New York architecture and its high society past.Written 30 September 2024

- Q7546ZYchristiank0 contributionsAn absolute must if you are interested in historyVery interesting tour. The guide was extremely well prepared and knowledgeable. Not much walking involved, we rode between stations and heard explanations while standing on platforms, so little physical fitness is required. Dress lightly as the stations tend to be very hot because of the heat which gets airconditioned out of the trains. Depending on what musicians are trying to get money from subway riders by playing over the sound of the trains and announcements it can become very noisy so if you are noise-sensitive this may not be for you. But if you are interested in the history of New York City it is a must.Written 29 September 2024
- Cliff0rd0 contributionsGreat tour for infrastructure fansI went on the Powering NYC: East River Ferry Tour and enjoyed it very much. The guide was quite knowledgeable about power generation and distribution. Additionally, the ferry ride was quite enjoyable in and of itself. Highly recommended.Written 23 September 2024

- andrewbI2497ZD0 contributionsSubway Secrets: A Must-Do for Any NYC VisitorWhat joys of the subway are missed in the hustle and bustle of people's commutes! Our guide, Richard, lived his entire life in NYC. This was evident in his grasp of, and love for, the history of this great city. He was flawless and patient. We walked, rode subways and learned, all at the right pace. I'll never look at this engineering marvel in the same way again. Thanks you untapped New York!Written 22 September 2024
- 749marcellek0 contributionsA terrific journey via the East River Ferry to see NYC power plants. Our guide, Cullen, was terrific! He created the tour "Powering New York City: East River Ferry tour. He was extremely knowledgeable, welcoming, and friendly. The whole experience was enlightening and it was a pleasure to travel along the East River beyond Hell Gate and see NYC and its power plants from the water. Highly recommend.Written 22 September 2024
- billtM907OT0 contributionsAwesome tour! well worth the time! The tour was awesome! Having deep New Amsterdam roots herself, Mandy our guide brought characters and places from 400 years ago back to life. Her modern day insight and deep historical knowledge provided a great perspective and balance of the good and not so good events. Because of the time we spent with her I have a much better understanding of my past and the past we all share because of this little island. Congrats to a job well done by Untapped New York and I would highly recommend their tours. I will make it a point to call on them again when in the area. The problem is which tour is next!Written 20 September 2024
- violetaa5770 contributionsNYC’s Irish Roots TourWent on the NYC’s Irish Roots Tour - had a great time walking around! I'd never heard of the Irish Hunger Memorial, where we started, and while I was familiar with a lot of the history discussed on the tour it was great to have that linked to specific places. Ashley Cathalain, the guide, was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic.Written 20 September 2024
- 570duncanc0 contributionsExcellent history lesson; would have liked more technical background.AJ was incredibly knowledgeable regarding the history of the NY subway system and enthusiastic in the relaying of this history. It was a most interesting tour. I am an engineer, and I would have liked to hear more about the workings and construction of the subway itself.Written 15 September 2024

GCT is a treasured resource to NYC. Ben was an exceptional guide sharing insights, pointing out hidden gems and the rich history of the building and railroad travel in NYC. Too often travelers pass thru this masterpiece without the time to appreciate it. If you think you’ve seen it all, this tour is highly recommended.

I loved seeing the historical pictures of Grand Central. Our Tour Guide JR did a great job telling us about the beginnings and the history of the terminal. There truly were so many secrets and interesting facts I did not know! I highly recommend this tour - especially to anyone who like myself has spent a good part of their life commuting in and out of this station and never giving it a good hard look! It’s a beauty!

A great tour with one of the most enthusiastic tour guides I have had on my many Untapped NYC. I am a big history geek on railroads and train stations. That they started the tour with the history of the 20th Century Limited. That was great to not just talk about the building.
Pretty much confirmed what I already knew about the place it was great to have a tour guide show off the great detail of the building.

My sister and I, who are native New Yorkers, did this tour. It was wonderful! Jonathan, our tour guide, was super knowledgeable and personable. We were a large group and he made it feel like a private tour (how does one memorize so many people's names so quickly???!!!!) We highly recommend this tour to anyone, tourist and native New Yorkers alike. The history of Grand Central Terminal is fascinating and had such an impact not only on the City but the rest of our country. Highly recommend this tour to anyone who loves not only New York but history in general!

Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the Grand Central, and she made the tour both informative and fun.
She had a knack for pointing out interesting details and stories that made the city come alive for us. We learned about the architecture, and the people who have shaped its history.
Overall, I would highly recommend this walking city trip to anyone who wants to explore NYC.

Laura Walter is a fantastic guide! I loved hearing the background stories of how Grand Central Terminal came to be. Her delivery of the information was smooth and you would have thought she’d been hosting this tour for years, instead of this being her first solo tour! I would tour any NYC site with Laura! And the earpiece was a great touch and let all participants hear her every word. 5 out of 5 stars for Laura!

The tour was just ok. The group was fairly large (20ish), so it was difficult to hear the guide, and the earpieces provided didn't work well. It was longer than expected at 90 min, but also felt slow/long. On the upside, we learned a few cool details about the historic terminal and saw a few areas we would never have known existed.

Hi Britney thanks for for leaving this review and we are very sorry you found the tour just ok. To be clear, we had three guides on assignment that day so your group size did not exceed 17 which is our max. We apologize about the earpiece it seems you were having signal crossover we were made aware of the problem and are correcting it immediately. Please reach out to us at tours@untappedcities.com so we can make the situation right. All our best!

Good tour, focused on art, historical fun facts, & architecture. It would’ve been nice to have had earphones, sometimes difficult to hear tour guide with all the noise in the terminal. Tour guide used a lap top to show earlier historical pictures. 15 people in the group.

Unfortunately this tour was very poor. I'm not sure if we got someone who had never given it before, but the host was hard to hear and understand and didn't seem to know much. The host didn't know anything about the building, history etc. My mom asked about the date of the chandeliers inside the building, he didn't know. He showed us a 'famous' photo of smoke inside the building and literally said "At some point this was taken". He knew no dates, statistics, figures etc. It was a complete waste of money and time. We left the tour about halfway through. Avoid!

As with all reviews, I thank you for taking the time to leave this one and I am sincerely disappointed by your experience. We apologize that you felt underwhelmed and fully refunded your order. We also emailed you and offered you to join this experience again with another guide, or join any of our upcoming walking tours for free in order to make up for this disappointing experience. Since I personally train all of our guides myself with well-researched and ample facts including the one you mentioned, I am shocked that this was not covered during your tour. As you can see by other reviews this is not a regular occurrence for our company. I will reach out to the guide as well and make sure he learns from this valuable feedback. Please be well!

Took the Secrets of GCT tour with Justin this weekend and have done a private Subway tour with Justin in the past. Both were AMAZING. The tours are well planned out and chock full of interesting information. Justin is enthusiastic, very knowledgable and comes with visual aids/pictures including photos he has taken himself that really amplify the experience. You know you are learning from someone who has a passion for the secrets and history of NYC. Justin is approachable and makes sure everyone has a great experience. He texts prior to the tour to make sure you are appropriately prepared to get the most out of the tour and comes prepared with sanitized earpieces to ensure that everyone can hear him despite the loudest of subway trains or train announcements. Will definitely be taking more Untapped tours in the future and would not hesitate to recommend this group to anyone!!
