- J4649JRmariahm0 contributionsMore of a Savannah at Night TourI’ve always wanted to do a ghost tour of Savannah and have always been interested in hearing about some of Savannah’s dark history. I enjoyed seeing the city at night. We sat on the back on the trolley, and were very disappointed that we could hardly hear the guide even though we asked her numerous times to speak up. Was hoping for a more enthusiasm from our guide as well after the fact, she didn’t seem very confident in her role. I think the fact she was very soft spoken didn’t help. We were very confused on which building she was referring to as she was telling the stories, but thank goodness there were signs out in front. There was also a lot of feedback from her mic the entire trip that was a little distracting. They had actors come onboard to tell their ghost stories, but didn’t fit into the story the guide was currently telling us so it was very confusing. We were able to get off the trolley at one stop and walk a bit to see the cathedral and the Hamilton Turner Inn. For $35+ per person (there were 4 of us in total), I’m very disappointed we weren’t able to hear the guide more clearly. If you do take this tour, I recommend getting a seat closer to the front. I’d love to do different trolley ghost tour in the future, it may be a better experience.Written 10 March 2024

- jennabG9095OC0 contributionsA disappointmentIt could have been great, but wasn’t. First, we got a call saying they were overbooked and had to change the date. Then, they booked us on the night of the Shamrock Run, so most of the streets in the historic district were closed, meaning we couldn’t see the sights normally seen on the tour. We were told our tour would be “truncated.” My opinion is if you cannot fulfill your obligations, don’t schedule on that night at all. Finally, the Pirate House meal was horrible. No one in my party could eat the food, and we are not picky eaters. If you were on the ghost tour, your menu options were limited, so I don’t know about the restaurant menu in its entirety. The guide and two ghost actors we did get to see were great, but I’m unhappy that this ghost tour company took my money and didn’t give us what we paid for.Written 3 March 2024

The tour itself is fine. It takes you throughout the entire historic Savannah district. Our driver & guide (Eddie) was great and gave an historical, though somewhat superficial, run down on some of the buildings & houses you pass. There's also rather pointless "celebrities" like Forest Gump & Robert Lewis Stevenson who get on & off the trolley at different stops & "entertain" with their stories. The point is you don't need this! While you can get off & on at certain locations you will find yourself walking around to see more at each stop--all of historic Savannah is gorgeous & you're going to find yourself just wandering about seeing as much as possible. With all the beautiful squares there's plenty of places to rest weary bones & sore feet. I'm in my mid 70s & had no problem. So many of the streets are lovely to walk down & it's really not that big of an area. If you're staying at one of the many hotels in the historic district I just don't see the sense in paying $30/person when the city cries out to be walked or biked (now, that would be a great way to see it). Obviously if you are not mobile the trolley might be a good option, otherwise get a good guide book, put on your walking shoes, take your time and stroll back into history.

The tour itself is very helpful for first time visitors to Savannah.
HOWEVER:
1. Not surprisingly the quality of the tour varies with the individual driver. When we got on, our driver was Arthur. Neither of us were impressed. He tried too hard to be “cute” and it didn’t work well. He was also difficult to understand. When we got back on after a stop at the City Market, our driver was Steve. He was head and shoulders above Arthur—very knowledgeable, low key, easy to understand and just an all around great guide.
2. Before we bought our tickets, I asked about Covid protocols and was told they require masks. Not true!!! Neither driver wore a mask. Arthur walked all around the trolley talking to people, adjusting windows, etc without a mask. Steve did not wear a mask either but we did not see him leave the driver’s seat. Even with headphone Mike’s, a mask might impact their speech BUT walking around and interacting with riders was very inconsiderate and unsafe.
3. No capacity limits and no social distancing by marking off seats. Seems like they wanted to get as much $$ as possible without doing what is right.
We did stay in bc most riders were considerate enough to mask up but there are always a few who think they are special. There was no attempt to encourage or require mask wearing so I feel like the clerk selling tickets was not honest with me.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We are sorry to hear that your expectations were not met. We will immediately look into what happened and make sure that this does not happen again. As for the capacity on the trolley, Savannah has a mandate of no more than 50 people in a group and our biggest trolley can hold up to 40 passengers. We apologize for any inconvenience and hope you will try us again next time you visit Savannah.

We have done this tour on 3 different occasions. The 1st time was great because we had this guy who knew all the stories about everything we went past. Unfortunately that was the only time this was worth the money. We used the trolley for the holiday weekend and it was truly disappointing. The 1st driver gave quips about different key spots in Savannah but no real history or even depth of description For example there is a statue of a woman with a dog that is waving at the boats as they come and go. I have no idea why that statue is there. Our 2nd narrator was significantly worse. She continually bragged about her background as a native but she didn't do much more than ramble on. For example, she told a story about being in Catholic girl's school and about the nun telling her to pull her skirt up. No clear plot line on that...
If you decide to get a pass please keep in mind buying it at the end if the day does not give you a break in the price. After we purchased our pass at about 2:00 in the afternoon we found out that the last trolley run started at 4:30 so we wouldn't be able to use it getting around Savannah instead of an Uber.
Because we dock our boat on the river here in Savannah the trolley might still be a good option on certain trips. However, when you arrive as a tourist, I would recommend double checking with the other service provider just up the block to see if their hours and stops fit your travel schedule better. If you use it as a way of getting around it might be cheaper to travel a different way.

We bought our tickets late afternoon when we arrived in Feb 3 because the friendly agent st the office (Katie) told us we could use it until 4:30 and all the next day (plus our parking both days was free!). We only had time for 6 stops that first day and quite frankly our guide talked too fast to understand and the trolley plastic windows were dirty and hard to see through - but THEN the next AM we got back on the trolley and hoped the new guide -Mr Komedy- would be an improvement and we were NOT disappointed! In fact he followed the “script” only enough to cover key points of interest. The rest of the time he entertained us with funny stories and clever jokes ) still related to the historic tour sites. We intended to do hop on and off but didn’t want to lose him as our guide so we happily hung out for all 16 stops! Best “bang for the buck” of our entire stay!!!

We took the hop on hop off tour so we could see the city at our pace. Boarded at the train station visitor center just after 9:00am on a Friday. We got off at a couple of the early stops and were able to get back on quickly when ready. The buses were about 15 minutes apart. Got back off at stop 7 and had lunch. We tried to get back on after lunch and two busses came by; first was full; second took some folks waiting in front of us and then was full. So we walked to stop 8 at ABERCORN, not Habersham like the map from the tour company says. Toured that area on our own for about 20 minutes and still had not seen a bus. In short, we walked on our own to City Market, then up River St and finally stopped at Stop 10 to reboard. Waited close to 30 minutes with 10 others waiting for Old Savannah. Old Towne tours had buses stopping every 5 minutes during that time.
My suggestion: if you take this tour, stay on the bus for one full rotation and hear the whole presentation. Then hop on/off at your leisure. The characters who boarded were OK but not great enough to make this tour better than one that didn’t make me waste time waiting on full buses. After we booked online, I found $5 off coupons at the GA Welcome Center, so look for coupons before booking if you decide to choose this company.
They did have free parking at Montgomery St but it was super hard to find because it’s at an old Bank America building and still branded everywhere as a bank unless you come in from exactly the right direction and see the placard on the street with the Old Savannah name.

Thank you for joining us for a tour. We apologize for your wait time. Mid day can often be tricky with people trying to get back on a trolley following lunch. It can be particularly difficult at certain stops where the restaurants are plentiful. We are sorry for any inconvenience.

The tour was just average. We had three different tour narrators and they covered the full range from just OK to very informative. There were three different trolley companies operating while were in Savannah. Even thought their rate was a little higher than others we selected this one because of the write up in their website about their lively historical re-enactors characters who Bring Savannah’s History to Life on the tour which we thought would be fun. As it turned out we only had one character come on our trolleys.

Excellent tour guide Gertrude. She was very well-informed and her character as a Southern lady helped make the experience feel authentic. We did one whole circuit to get out bearings first. I recommend going early so you have plenty of time to explore with hop-on, hop off or on foot to revisit favorite sites.

We had the "dream team" of Paula driving and Mike Gardner providing a perfect mix of entertainment and true local insight into the rich history of Savannah. And it seems this local tour line (not a national chain) is the only one with actors that board the trolley from time to time, introducing themselves as notable Savannah residents from bygone eras and briefly recounting their personal experiences during important moments in Savannah's history. Best thing we did during our stay!

Overall the trolleys are full, they oversell, guides can be rude, and not truly hop on or hop off as no one wants to get off as may not be able to get back on. Plus, the actors characters that get on are mostly just ads for more tours. Gave it two stars as it is a trolley and a tour but would never recommend it.
For my wife and I, called and confirmed with ticketing that it was truly hop on and hop off and you could enter at any of the designated stops. We waited for a trolley at our first stop. The trolley had two seats and driver guide announced to the tour that we were the “lucky two” as there was a crowd waiting and only room for two. As my wife sat down in the back I was presenting my tour confirm, the driver said, “oh, your new to the tour and have to go to the center to get set up”. I said that I had called the office to confirm and they had said getting on anywhere was fine, the driver said “its my decision and I dont like to do it on days like today”. He then made my wife and I leave the trolley in front of all the other riders and as he drove off he said he was calling us a shuttle. We waited another 20 minutes for the shuttle and lost over an hour total - plus, had to start in areas we didnt care about. On our eventual tour the trend was that each stop there would be a crowd of people waiting and no space.
(If anyone at Old Savannah Tours cares, we didnt get the guides name as he was kicking us off, but it was 6/20, trolley 920, 1:23 pm at the Cathedral stop).
So disappointing and use another company for tours.

We are very sorry to hear about your experience with us. We are definitely looking into who told you that you had to get off. We do allow you to get on at any stop. On busier days, we do send shuttles to pick up new starts, but you should not have been kicked off the trolley. We sincerely apologize for this, and we definitely will make sure this doesn't happen again.

We just finished the Hop on Hop off trolley tour and Mr Comedy was amazing. He was very engaging and his humorous method of introducing history to the passengers made you want the tour to continue. Southern hospitality at its finest. Would highly recommend this tour, make sure you get Mr Comedy he will make the tour well worth it. There’s a female that isn’t as enjoyable and makes you feel like a small pupil in a classroom.

I have a group of 25 coming to Savannah for a company mtg. Do you offer private tours?

I'm not sure about private tours. The trolley guide may be able to answer your question. But your meeting will definitely fill the trolley! Good luck!
