About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- rxgirl450 contributionsNumber one favorite tour in NOLAI have been on a lot of great tours in New Orleans over the years and this is my number one favorite. Beth is so informative and so funny that you really just want to hang out with her and be her friend. One tip I do have that i did not follow would be to treat this as a wine tasting and don't finish all of your drinks. :-)Written 15 February 2025
- jbird20390 contributionsExcellent guideThe tour guide (Beth) was amazing. She was extremely knowledgeable and made for an enjoyable experience. The time went by fast and felt like it could have continued for hours longer. Was fun and informative. The guide even has a lot of local knowledge and provided a lot of information related to local history that was fun to hear.Written 14 February 2025
- lisa07270 contributionsGreat guide and group! We had the best time on this tour! Ben was a great guide and was so knowledgeable! We lucked out and had a great group that we ended up hanging out longer after the tour ended! Would highly recommend 😊Written 14 February 2025

- Sunnyrayday0 contributionsWouldn't have started our stay in NOLA any other way - great tourBest decision we made on our first trip ever to NOLA was to take this tour with Dr. Gumbo. Gary, our friendly tour guide, was a fount of knowledge on the history of the unique food and drink to be had in the French Quarter. The tour included a variety of fare, and the food and drink were plentiful. This tour was the first thing we did when we got to NOLA and it set us up for an enhanced appreciation of the city for the rest of our stay.Written 12 February 2025
- F1314JTgracea0 contributionsHighlight of our trip! This was truly the highlight of our New Orleans trip. Beth was hilarious, extremely knowledgeable, and took us to places we never would have found on our own. The price was more than fair for all that was included. History, local culture, delicious drinks, and a fun night on the town!Written 3 February 2025
- rubyroytravelexpert0 contributionsGreat Cocktails, Food and StoriesWhat I enjoyed most about this tour was listening to Ben's srories, how he told the stories. Also chatting to Ben on what brought him to theses tours. I especially enjoyed the excellent great quality cockails. . The pace, length of time was good. I gnerally prefer private tours rather than public . However it was enjoyable and nice to share with others. For the remainder of my stay most were disappointing. The portions were just right., flavours were right. As Canada's first culinary guide and a culinary guide in Montreal as well as being President Emeratius of the International guides association, I am often sent to try different guides and tours around the world. I would recommend this tour as a great introduction to Louisanna and New Orleans cuisine. I especially liked the follow uo emails with the places we had been and what we tried. Well done! He brought the stories and flavors of the city to life, making the experience enjoyable and engaging for all of us. I recently joined a food tour in New Orleans led by Kat, and it was fantastic! Her friendly demeanor made us all feel welcome. The variety of dishes was impressive, showcasing the city’s unique flavors—from gumbo to hot sauce. Kat’s extensive knowledge of New Orleans’ history added depth to each stop, making the experience even more enriching. Highly recommend this tour for anyone wanting to explore the culinary delights of the city!

Our tour guide Beth was fantastic - very knowledgeable and passionate about the culture, cuisine and city. All the food samples were extremely tasty, with good portion sizes and ample time at each spot. Very good variety, as well, of foods and venues. Would definitely recommend this tour if you're coming to New Orleans and want to hit the culinary highlights in a few hours.

After a disappointing food tour due to allergies and no substitutions, I contacted the owner and this was the response I received:
My Inquiry:
We were very pleased with the Tour Operator, Nate. He was quite informative and attentive.
However, I was so disappointed in the lack of attention to substitute foods due to allergies. My son is allergic to seafood and missed several dishes, such as, Poboy sandwich and Boudin Balls.
My wife has a severe peanut allergy and was unable to taste all deserts, such as, pralines, peanut bridal, and banana pudding pie. The tour guide did inquire in each facility, however, the facilities did not have a guaranteed substitute that did not mix with fish or peanuts.
We have experienced food tours before and were very impressed with the separate dishes provided
to us. Sadly to say, we cannot recommend this Food Tour due to the lack of accommodations.
Owners Response:
I just looked through your reservation and there wasn’t any note about any allergies. I get peanut allergies and seafood allergies all the time, and we always accommodate this.
A seafood allergy means only missing out on the Poboy, and we then provide an additional portion of the muffuletta. I’m not sure why he didn’t sample the Boudin, since it does not contain any seafood.
Additionally, none of the foods are fried in peanut oil, and there are no peanuts in the brittle or the pralines, only pecans. However, if the allergy is severe enough, technically everything inside of the praline shop is potentially cross contaminated, so maybe that’s why she didn’t sample the pralines or brittle? Again, we get peanut (and tree nut) allergies all the time… It’s one of the most common allergies I deal with, so I’m confused why those two samples were skipped. If it was in fact, because of fear of cross-contamination, then nothing in the store would’ve been appropriate.
Regarding the final dish (the bananas Foster bread pudding), we usually substitute that with a bowl of creole cream cheese ice cream. It is my understanding that you were served a substitute dish of creole cream cheese ice cream.
I’m not trying to be combative, and I never want anyone to have a negative experience with my company, so I’m sorry that you don’t feel like you can recommend my business. And if you did make a note in your reservation about the allergies and I missed it somehow, again I apologize. But I check reservations thoroughly, and there weren’t any notes in your reservation about any allergies.
My Response:
Unfortunately, I missed the opportunity during the reservation to note allergies. However, I did state allergies at the start of the tour. There were no substitutions at all made. Any foods that were skipped were due to allergies/cross contamination. Again, I have always been accommodated in the past, whether at reservation or attending events. If the store is completely/possibly cross contaminated, don’t you think the establishment should accommodate for this medical issue since we all paid the same fee for the tour. Never have we encountered a full price fee without any possible substitutions. I am also not trying to be combative, but understand, your tour guide understood and respected the severity of the allergies and was not willing to risk any medical issues.

Let's be very clear: you signed up for a Food History Tour in New Orleans. And despite being advised multiple times to provide us IN ADVANCE of any allergies, you failed to do so. Again, during the check-out process, you were asked to provide us with any food allergies, which again you did not do.
And then you arrived with 2 guests in your party with severe and pervasive food allergies: seafood and peanuts.
For context: people contact me in advance all the time to discuss allergies. The two most common allergies we contend with are shellfish and peanuts. Fortunately there are no shellfish or peanuts on the tasting menu.
That said, we have had people before with severe peanut allergies, and although the pralines and brittle contain pecans (not peanuts), these guests usually opt to not even enter the praline shop (Leah's Pralines) since they understand there is technically the potential for cross-contamination.
To claim that "there were no substitutions made at all" is simply not true. During your visit to Leah's Pralines your wife was offered a chocolate turtle substitution (which contained no nuts at all) instead of a praline, but was also advised by the owner that "technically" everything in the shop has the potential for exposure. As such, she opted not to accept the chocolate turtle. The bacon pecan brittle sample was also skipped despite it containing no peanuts.
Regarding the final dessert, the Bananas Foster bread pudding, she was served a substitution of Creole Cream Cheese Ice Cream.
Skipping the fried catfish po-boy is definitely advisable for anyone who is allergic to seafood, but I'm still not sure why he skipped the boudin.
So, quick recap: you signed up for a food history tour (in seafood-saturated New Orleans) and made no notes about food allergies. And despite the last minute notice of severe and life-threatening allergies, we either served or attempted to serve substitutions. Your son ate 7 of the 9 samples, and your wife separately ate 7 of the 9 samples.
Happy holidays,
Doc

Wasn't sure what to expect, since I didn't read up on any review. I figured with us being mostly over 50+, we need something mellow.
Saw this and thought I have two history nerds in the group, and who doesn't love eating, so why not?!
Mike, our tour guide was great! We were all wondering how did he manage to keep all that info in his head? And throwing us a few jokes and role playing here and there made it so much more interesting.
People from my group were still talking about how good he was by the time we got back to the hotel.
Highly recommend this to folks who wants to know the stories behind some of the food served in French Quarter.

This is a must-do if you're visiting NOLA for the first time (or any time). Gary provided the history of the city and area with accessible context--and it seamlessly informed the evolution of what we ate, too. The food stops were all excellent and delicious--we had the range of classic NOLA fare, we were introduced to some places to re-visit. Gary is a skilled tour guide--it can be hard to compete with the sounds of the NOLA streets, but he always found spots to make sure we could hear him/he can talk over them:-) This was a highlight of our week in the city, thank you!!

Mike our guide really made the tour exceptional. My husband and I love doing food tours and usually do at least 2-3 a year. Mike mentioned some of his background which had included a variety of things, one of which was stand up comedy. We didn’t have any trouble believing that. He was thoroughly entertaining, clearly loves New Orleans and while we didn’t share that opinion, we certainly loved what he showed and shared. His stories were highly entertaining, his honesty about food choices and explanations were informative and helpful. The only regret was that we hadn’t been able to book it sooner in our stay so that we could follow up on his recommendations. While we don’t have any plans to be back in New Orleans, we can wholeheartedly recommend taking Mike’s tour and if we do return would do so ourselves. Ah, should mention the food itself most were good, wasn’t wild about the praline, but am not a sweets person. The gumbo was delightful, the mufelatto(?) tadty and hearty. The red beans and rice dish surprisingly flavorful and the bread pudding and ice cream yummy(and remember I am not a sweets person).

This tour was worth it! Our tour guide was Mike and he was entertaining and also so knowledgeable of the area and its rich history. My husband and I felt the tour was a perfect amount of time (about 3 hours) and a good amount of food (catfish po boys, muffaletta, red beans and rice, gumbo, banana fosters bread pudding) was perfect. We definitely don't suggest eating prior to this tour! We also stopped at some stores for hot sauces and pralines. We would highly recommend doing this tour if you're only in NOLA for a short amount of time and want to a taste for its food and culture.

Never had a food tour that disappointed. Equally this one. Our food and history tour around the French Quarter gave us an excellent taste of both NO foods and history, how all the different cultures blended, influenced each other and made this unique City WY hundreds of us come to visit. Beth, our guide, provided insights, energy and humor. Definitely recommend.

So at the begging of the tour I was curious and open minded, but at the end, I was a believer. While walking and talking you experience, the tastes and sounds the city is known for. You are shuffled into the back and sides of restaurants and given at taste of their (and their city's) most infamous dishes. This was all done with Beth, a New Orleans transplant who hasn't just been infatuated with the city, but fallen head over heels in love with a beautiful wonderful place that is rich and deep in culture. She has taken the time and care to learn it's secrets and translate it to the group in a fun and enjoyable manner.

We are coming in mid-April. My wife is in a mobility scooter but can transfer and walk short distances. She can navigate short steps if they have handrail. Is this a good tour to book? We are staying at Club La Passion on Decatur St, is this close to starting point?

this sounds like a lot of food ❤️
Is it just samples or enough to split for 2
Written 17 January 2020
It was food samples and we'd had a more than adequate lunch by the end of the tour. Each participant has to buy a ticket, so you can't tag along like a 2 for 1 special. I don't think the tour guide would appreciate that.
